  1. Scented, thank you for your reply. I am very pleased with the HT and the burn of this fragrance. It is Blueberry Pumpkin Patch from Aztec. It's a pretty powerful thrower, and it is a nice scent that I would really like to include in my line. I was just really thrown by the lack of CT, since this one does have a strong HT. The funny thing is, the candles I have poured and have not burned have no CT, and this is after a 2 week cure. BUT if I sniff a previously burned candle in this FO when it is cold, there is a moderate CT. I use 1 oz. PP, as that is what I normally stick to. I use 6006, and cold throw has left me disappointed with this wax before. I know it's a good FO, and I know the customer will be pleased with the *burning* candle, but like you said, I doubt they will buy it if they pick it up in the store and can't smell it. I think I'll pour some clams with a higher fragrance load and see if they have a better CT.
  2. I have several of the Mainstays warmers, 3 different sizes, and they all work well with 4625/4630 blended at all different %. I am inclined to think your FO's may just be duds. I'd say pick one FO....a proven thrower....and go from there.
  3. They all make a mess. Droppers are slightly less messy. Still, gimme messy liquid dye any day over chips or blocks.
  4. Thank you for the offer. I have pondered it. I really do not have room for anything else in my lineup, and even though I would like to sniff it, it isn't worth you going to the trouble since I am really, really, really NOT going to add anything else. I hope. The scent I am having problems with is Blueberry Pumpkin Patch from Aztec. Nothing new, but new to me. It is just lovely. Up close, I smell the pumpkin, but it's the blueberry that wafts through the house. It's just one of those feel good scents. I ordered it on a whim when they had their Labor Day sale, and I fell in love with it. I don't have anything quite like it in my fall/winter lineup. It's a powerful thrower, and one 8oz mason scents my whole house (one story). Just no cold throw. At all. I guess I'll just be burning a lot of it in the store for the next couple of months....LOL. On a related note, on the same whim I also ordered Leaves (Slatkin/BBW dupe) during that sale, and it's a pretty great fall scent as well.
  5. You're welcome for the sample. I hope it made the trip without leaking. We do keep a candle burning in the store, and I had thought I could just burn that one often. It's the best way I've found to introduce customers to scents they wouldn't otherwise try. If nothing is burning and the customer is left to buy based on cold throw, 8 out of 10 customers will smell everything and then buy something apple. But I can burn something totally different....like Oakmoss & Amber...and that same customer will say, "I want the one you are burning." I guess when in doubt they stick with something safe. So I guess I could just burn a whole lot of these to get the exposure out there, but they are probably still gonna pick up a fresh one and sniff it, and they aren't gonna smell anything. Ugh. I really love this scent, but no cold throw is bumming me out. It's hard to believe that a candle with such a strong HT has absolutely no CT at all. It's the weirdest thing.
  6. I have a fragrance that I am determined to add to my fall/winter line, but it has virtually no cold throw whatsoever. The hot throw, however, is excellent. It's a unique (to my line) scent, and I know it will be a customer favorite IF someone will buy a candle with no CT. What do you guys do in this situation? I know I could rub a little FO on top or something like that, but I don't know how I feel about doing that. Any thoughts or suggestions?
  7. Ditto the above. I try to consider that the customer may not trim the wick, also. To that end, I try to eliminate mushrooms as much as possible, because unfortunately, if you light a mushroom, it's gonna soot and burn poorly. You might want to try to lower your FO load to see if that doesn't eliminate some of the mushrooming.
  8. Thank you for the reviews. I've already ordered my Fraser Fir from CS, and I guess I'll stick with it for this season, but I am intriqued by VBN. The only thing I want to mention is that I have a pound of WSP Spiced Cranberry and it is way more spice than cranberry. I'm not a fan. I've tried to blend it to use it up, but the spice is so overwhelming, I haven't had much luck yet. It has great reviews though, so maybe it's just me.
  9. You're welcome, and don't worry about the shipping. You might have something I want to try one day
  10. Moonstar, I have 1/2 an ounce of Celebrate. I made one 8 oz candle, and that was all the testing I need to do with it. If you want it, let me know.
  11. As an aside to this discussion.... I decided to test some other CS samples before I ordered in case I needed more than Fraser Fir. Well, come to find out, the Snickerdoodle is pretty awesome as well. And Black Currant Tea....why have I never tried it before? It's very nice.
  12. I've never used chalk paint on jars, just furniture, but I have painted jars with regular spray paint with a top coat of clear spray paint and I haven't gotten any fumes or anything like that when burning the candle. I usually use the Krylon brand clear spray paint. Those jars are just gorgeous, and now my mind is spinning with holiday decorating ideas! I got into painting jars a couple of years ago. I was doing monogrammed jars for a while, and that was fun. I just love mason jar projects!
  13. These are a few that I like: Frasier Fir (CS), Christmas Hearth (CS), Northwoods Christmas (BCN), Winter Wonderland (Peak), Earthen Oak (FB), Leaves (TFC), Holly Berry (CS).
  14. No, no bad experience really, and I do think they have quality products. The last time I ordered from WSP it took over a week before my items shipped, and that was off-putting. That's my biggest issue. Then their prices are crazy, and the handling fee, and the "jump the line" thing. I'm just not a fan. I was looking at Autumn Lodge and it would have been $47/lb w/shipping. I'm sure something will entice me to order from them again though. I've been tempted by all this Frasier Fir talk.
  15. I love the stickums too. I've never had one come loose in a burning candle, and they really do come off easily enough. I pop my jars in the oven on warm to melt the leftover wax, and that heats the jar up just enough to get the stickum off. Love them.
  16. LOL....I just found this, so here goes! What's your name? Call me B. How old are you? 45 Where do you live? Lived 39 years of my life in eastern NC, but moved to southern WV in 2010 to open a campground. We spend 8-9 months in WV, and the rest of the year in coastal NC. How long have you been making candles/soap/whatever? On and off for 20 years. How did you get started making candles/soap/whatever? I really have no idea. I remember making my first candles around 1995, but I don't know why I even wanted to do it. They were horrible candles, by the way, but they came in handy when the electricity went out in a hurricane! I picked it back up when we moved to WV because we wanted to offer some locally made/hand made items in our shop. Are you married? Any kids? Married 27 years. Have 2 daughters....1 living and 1 deceased. If candle/Soap making isn't your primary job, what do you do? Own and operate a campground. Anything else we should know? Ummm.....if I think of something, I'll let you know
  17. I use zincs and love them. I'm not sure the diameter of the 4oz tin. I use 51-32's in the 8oz tin, but I know it's somewhat wider. I would think the 4oz will take something between 44-24 and 44-32.
  18. I usually use 44-24-18 zinc in my 8 and 16 oz mason jars. The 51 is too much in masons once it burns down into the jar, in my experience.
  19. Congrats on your blend. It sounds lovely! I just wanted to echo your review of CS Fraser Fir. I burned my tester yesterday, and it really is so nice. A very, very good Thymes match. The throw was great at 6% in 6006. I'll be adding this to my lineup as well.
  20. I wish I could get them. I was at DT yesterday, and I looked at what they had on the shelves. The ones that had labels on the bottom are the other brand...I don't recall the name, but they are made In Colombia. They also had some that did not have labels on the bottom, so I don't know what they are. The cube jars are still Libbey, and they had another style Libbey jar that I'm not familiar with. I'm not afraid to use the non-Libbey jar for me or for testing, but I'm not sure if it would be a good idea to sell it. I need to try to find out more about them.
  21. I am really loving the Fraser Fir from CS. I'd kinda like to try WSP's Fraser Fir, but I don't really like dealing with them. Is it really that much better than the CS version?
  22. I have tried Premier wicks in 6006, but I can't remember why I didn't like them as well as the zincs. I want to think the flame was kind of erratic, but I may be totally wrong about that. Thinking about it makes me want to try them again and see. I haven't been using 6006 but about a year, but I have tried some of those scents. You should be able to get a good HT with the Driftwood, Chardonnay, Pumpkin Pie, Apple Jack & Peel at 1 oz PP.
  23. I stick to 1 oz PP in all but a couple of fragrances. Honeydew (CS) and Strawberries & Champagne (TFC) are two that I use at 1.2oz PP. I do use MacApple from CS, but I use it at 1 oz PP, and I haven't detected a burnt smell. Maybe the difference is in our wicks. What wicks are you using?
  24. I just wanted to add that I found some of my citronella candles that were poured in the Aztec tins (the dented ones) and they are NOT rusting. All of these citronella candles were poured on the same day. So, now I'm 100% sure it's just The Flaming Candle tins that are rusting. Aztec's tins are perfectly fine.
