  3. In particular, paraffin wax gets a bad rap. Product bashing makes me uncomfortable and I certainly don't like it if it involves false information or false reasons. In my experience and given the right conditions, any candle can produce smoke/soot and not just paraffin candles. 😂 What drives me nuts is all the false information out there that keeps getting circulated and purposefully regurgitated by people, for marketing or etc., that are suppose to be professionals/experts in this field. To me it makes them look, let's just say, ignorant and untrustworthy. But that's my opinion and I"m sticking to it. LOL. 😄 The candle industry is long over due for some new and exciting information and break throughs. 🕯️
  4. For me, I like all waxes, and some I like better than others depending on what product I'm making. They all have their pros and cons and I would imagine if any were as harmful as lead wicks were then we would not only hear about it but it would be banned as well.
  5. Hi @Audra and welcome to Craft Server. I've never made hurricane candles but I found these links. They may be helpful to you. Have fun! https://www.candlefish.com/blogs/the-blog-at-candlefish/botanical-hurricanes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGewAZ70D44 http://shamrockaffiliations.ws/Hurricane_Candle_Instructions.php#.XlxUCKhKi44
  6. Funny you said that, before I started making candles myself I don't ever recall knowing or caring what wax a candle was made of. It never crossed my mind. If someone had asked me what type of candle is that or is it soy or paraffin, I wouldn't have had a clue. LOL! Even now, as long as a candle smells great and burns decently I'm very happy. ☺️🕯️

  8. If you make a lot of red products maybe it would be worth your while to have an extra mold just for reds.
  9. OMG, you are right, it does look like a painting. They are pretty candles.
  10. Maybe one of these will be useful https://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Homemade-Scented-Paper/ https://craftbits.com/project/fragrant-paper/
  11. I had to look them up, I've never heard of them. Seems like a neat product. I also like @TallTayl ideas with the salts.
  12. The pumpkin one is really cute too. I love arts and crafts stuff.
  13. Hi @BusyBee, thanks. I will expand on this topic some more, I think it's interesting and others may too. (Note: this should be moved under the "Product Safety for Wax Products" topic but I wanted to go ahead and respond so the point would be clear) Right, that's what the article stated but that's a broad statement, different things could be taking place. I'm simply trying to get the point across that many different factors could be involved but they don't go into detail. You would imagine a big company like that isn't just going to sell dangerous junk but sometimes defective supplies can be unknowingly procured. Errors or mistakes are not always found on just one side. Injured consumers should be dealt with fairly, they were injured, and also good manufactures that do things right shouldn't be wrongly accused of bad practices. See what I'm saying? There's not enough information about what actually transpired in order to draw a firm or fair conclusion, many people will just assume this company is terrible and sells junk. Is that the correct conclusion or not, we don't know. I bet people on here that sell their products and deal with customers have come up against this exact situation at one point or another. I know for myself, if I was selling products and had followed all the safety standards and requirements and a customer abused my product and then tried to blame me then I would deal with it appropriately. Things to Consider: - Did the manufacturer use proper heat resistant glass? - Did the manufacturer use the proper wick? - Did the manufacturer properly test the candle? - Did the manufacturer include the proper warnings and usage instructions? - Did the user trim the wicks properly which is usually posted on the warning label or included with burning instructions? Or did the user allow the flame to get out of control? - Did the user leave wick trimmings, used matches, etc. in the melted wax which could randomly ignite? - Did the user leave the candle burning forever? - And so on and so on. Anybody got anything to add to this discussion? Would love to hear it.
  14. Cool, I love musk so I like the sound of those scents together; mint, musk and patchouli. I don't currently have all those scents on hand in order to experiment. I'll have to keep this in mind and follow this post to see what others say. Per this site https://www.luckyscent.com/product/33901/thundra-by-profumum it says leaves, mint, patchouli, white musk And a review said, "You might recognize the smell as being more or less the fragrance of a bar of Irish Springs soap with just a little musk tossed in the background. "
  15. That's for sure, I was looking at Candles on Etsy last night and I saw at least two different companies using the exact same graphics on their labels and either the same or similar jars. The graphic was cute but it's confusing to the customer. I thought it was the same company until I clicked through to the store front and they were different. I was like what? In fairness, it did look like the product labels were the generic kind you can purchase from graphic artists that sell that same label to anybody all day long. That's a good example of why you should have custom labels made. Lots of times those same graphic artists will do custom work for you. And I'm not saying that is your situation, just using it as an example. I'm all for not reinventing the wheel and I know what I like when I see it but it's just not right to completely steal someone else's style, look, brand, etc. It's one thing to get a few ideas from somebody that impresses you but being a complete copy cat is tacky. 😜
  16. Cool, congrats on your success too. 👍 Since you and @MilosCandles are living the Etsy adventure and are successful sellers I appreciate you all sharing your knowledge and experience. 😊
  17. Hi @Peggy T. Yes there is. Here's 2 that I came across and I'm sure there are more. Good luck. 👍 "Wicks Unlimited’s free wick optimization candle test burning support service." 18. To start this topic off I'll post links to these two articles that I found on the National Candle Association's website. They certainly don't like nor agree with some research that South Carolina State University has been doing on candles and posting on their website. Looks like the NCA makes some valid points. https://candles.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/The-National-Candle-Association-Response-to-Massoudi-1.pdf https://candles.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/NCA.SCSU-Press-Release-4.11.2017.pdf

  20. Hi @ScienceCandles. It doesn't hurt to look at candles that you like or admire and duplicate what they do while adding your own flare to it. Why reinvent the wheel, so to speak, right? General Candle info https://candles.org/ Label info https://candles.org/fire-safety-candles/read-the-label/
