  1. To start this topic off I'll post links to these two articles that I found on the National Candle Association's website. They certainly don't like nor agree with some research that South Carolina State University has been doing on candles and posting on their website. Looks like the NCA makes some valid points. https://candles.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/The-National-Candle-Association-Response-to-Massoudi-1.pdf https://candles.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/NCA.SCSU-Press-Release-4.11.2017.pdf
  2. Also, check this out, "Recent Consumer Video Brings Attention to the Importance of Safe Candle Use" by the National Candle Association. https://candles.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/candle-safety-PR-080417.pdf
  3. Hi @ScienceCandles. It doesn't hurt to look at candles that you like or admire and duplicate what they do while adding your own flare to it. Why reinvent the wheel, so to speak, right? General Candle info https://candles.org/ Label info https://candles.org/fire-safety-candles/read-the-label/
  4. Hello all. Want to share some links I found while reading posts on here that relate to product safety and candle companies that have been involved in lawsuits. Since this was brought up in a previous unrelated post I wanted to give it it's own post. It's interesting to read about the candle related law suits so you can learn from other's mistakes. Some mistakes appear to be by the manufacture, user error or a combination of both. Really makes me think about how I would present my products, package them, write up usage & warning info that wouldn't be misleading or confusing to the buyer or end user. To be blunt, it's like you have to dummy proof everything and explain everything and not assume people will know the intentions of your product. But what would be worse than being sued would be knowing that I injured someone with my product. 😩 https://www.cpsc.gov/search?site=cpsc_site&output=xml_no_dtd&getfields=*&tlen=120&client=ek_drupal_01&proxystylesheet=ek_drupal_01&filter=p&query=candle https://www.lawyersandsettlements.com/search.html?keywords=candle https://candles.org/ https://candles.org/industry-standards/ https://candles.org/fire-safety-candles/
  5. Wow, I just now saw this post, so sorry. I don't sell products but if you do some searches on here or other places I'm sure you will find some info, which you've probably already done.
  6. Interesting info from someone in the trenches, thanks for sharing. 👍 And congrats on your success, that's awesome!
  7. Wow, that's certainly a candle maker's nightmare. It would be interesting to know exactly what happened, it doesn't list the details. If it was user error, manufacturer error or both.
  8. I like your concrete containers for plants and candles and I like the lids you used with the candles, nice work. I'm curious, when using a concrete pot for a candle do you have to coat it with something before pouring the wax in it? Does it seem to soak up some of the liquid wax?
  9. Ecosoya out of business? Maybe, maybe not. As of Feb. 2020 looks like EcoSoya was bought out by Kerax Ltd. in the UK and will be reopening. https://ecosoyabrands.com/index.html

  11. Hmm... that's interesting. Definitely points to consider.
  12. LOL, yes, congrats on the fundraiser. Enjoy the FOs.
  13. Oh wow, that's disturbing. 😲 Hadn't thought of that.
  14. I know, right? LOL. Or why would you still need etsy? At that point shouldn't you have managed to direct your customers to your own online store anyway, so you can control all aspects of your business? I don't know but it sounds good. 😄 I think of platforms like Amazon, Etsy, etc. as a starting place for launching an e-commerce business and along the way growing your own online store so if something happens with those companies then you & your business are not SOL. 🤑 I have read articles in the past about Etsy sellers that outgrew the platform for one reason or another and moved on to their own online store. If I remember correctly this company was one of them https://www.threebirdnest.com/
  15. I saw that, I'm not quite sure what to think about it yet. The part that bothers me up front is where it says if you have "More than $10,000 USD in sales in a 12-month period" then you are "Required" to participate in the program and pay a "12%" fee. Required Participation, really? That bothers me. The other 15% fee option is only Recommended. This sounds like a good way for them to lose some of their sellers that have high sales. 🤷‍♂️
  16. Hey, you shouldn't give up. We've all had bad experiences and have thought the same thing. Like TallTayl says, it's the tough times that help you learn so much.
  17. CD/Stabilo wicks are "non-directional". But here's something to keep in mind when using wicks that are no longer attached to their original base tab. Some wicks are "directional" and some are not, I can't remember which ones are and not all wick sellers supply this information. "Directional" means that the wick was manufactured to effectively consume or draw up the melted wax in only one direction. When using wick pieces be certain that you are inserting the wicks in the correct direction or you may get unpredictable results. I have seen odd results first hand. To make life easy I just always assume a wick is directional once I cut the tab off. Directional wick example: https://wicksunlimited.com/wicks/wedo-candle-wicks/wedo-rrd-wicks/ Non-Directional CD/Stabilo (and CDN/Stabilo KST) wick info: https://wicksunlimited.com/wicks/heinz-candle-wicks/ Wick Manufactures that list if a wick they make is directional or not. https://wicksunlimited.com/wicks/ http://www.atkinsandpearce.com/candle-solutions/
  18. After looking at GailC's original post, it looks like she tried to upload images that were too large for the site's requirements. I can't see the images either, only a place holder for them. She would have to post them again as smaller images.
  19. That's an interesting idea @BusyBee. How does it perform?
  20. That's a great idea. Take pause or reconsider a purchase before you make it. Something I had been guilty of and I say "had" because I stopped doing it was late night online shopping. Wrong, big mistake. Now what I do, late night or not, is add items to the cart and save it as a pdf doc. The next day I can look over the pdf docs to see if I have any duplicates, check the quantities, ask myself if I really need it, can I buy from only 1 supplier instead of multiple, etc. and then make the purchase/s if needed. There's been many times that I have saved myself some money by doing that.
