  1. I agree. I don't think I could really pick just one either but the ones that I love to pour are always any sugar cookie scent, especially JS's buttercream sugar cookie, and banana nut bread and other bakery scents. I have found some of the berry scents that I like to pour but mostly bakery. Guess I like food all the way around! LOL!
  2. Thank y'all for your recommendations! I've seen this scent listed on suppliers websites and it just didn't sound appealing. I was so wrong!
  3. I was in Wal Mart tonight and picked up a BHG clamshell called Vanilla woods and really liked it. The description said it was vanilla and oak. I've seen that FO on a couple of vendors websites. Candlewic has vanilla and oak and NG has french vanilla and oak and so does RE. Has anyone used this FO from anyone? Thanks!
  4. I use a paper bag when I pour tarts in silicone molds. I think they look cute bagged up in the brown paper bags with the window. I also use clamshells and cello bags and tie the cello bags closed with a ribbon or homespun fabric. It just depends on the look I'm aiming for. HTH
  5. I've tried Peak's wild mountain honey and you're right, it's a very nice scent. Is Tennessee's VBN that much better than what everyone else carries? I'm just curious because I've read that on here before but what I've tried from NG smells pretty good to me but that's the only VBN I've tried. Their Mrs. Claus Cookies is a good vanilla too if you haven't tried it. Sorry to hear about TCS closing, especially if they carry the best VBN. Hope you can find a replacement Dave.
  6. I may have to try that one! Sounds very nice.
  7. I just went and got the bottle from ICS. It's vanilla wafers, not VFG's. But anyway, it was like that about a third of the way up. It's an 8 ounce bottle. I just shook it up and it looks like pulp or something floating around in it, sort of like yours. It smells fine but I'm wondering if it would even dissolve in wax. I've never used it but I might give it a try tomorrow. It's hot here in Texas so I would've thought it would have dissolved by now! Instead it seems thicker.
  8. I agree with BlancaD. I've only smelled NG's cucumber wasabi cilantro OOB but I was pleasantly surprised at the scent.
  9. I ordered a bottle several months ago of vanilla frosted grahams from ICS that did the exact same thing. I emailed them and if I remember correctly they said that sometimes the FO will crystalize because of the cold weather. I think they suggested putting it in warm water but I never got around to doing it. It still looks the same too.
  10. I just poured some from Lonestar today that I thought was really good. Send me your address and I will send you a sample of theirs and the Candle Source's white cake. I also have cake bake and birthday cake. Birthday Cake from Peaks and Rustic Escentuals is really good.
  11. I'm having the same problem with 4630 and HTP wicks. I also think I used too much FO but I've gone up 2 sizes and still don't get a full melt pool. I have some LX and larger HTP wicks coming in soon so I hope that will work. You'll get some good advice on here. Sadly, I'm not the one that can help you. Just wanted you to know that I'm having the same problem with the same size and type of wick but different wax. This is the wick that was recommended as the best on the CS website though but that is just a guideline.
  12. I've only used 6006 out of those three waxes but have read good things about the other two! I really like 6006. Even though I've switched to all paraffin, I'm still debating whether I want to use 6006 or 4630 for containers. Some people use 6006 alone when they do clamshells. I found it to be a little soft for me but when I mixed it with a harder wax it did great! You'll do fine and have so much fun! Peaks has great oils. Other good companies are Rustic Escentuals, Candle Science, The Candle Source, Nature's Gardens, and Candlewic to name a few. If you ever want opinions about a certain fragrance before you buy, you'll usually find that on here too. That has really helped me a lot. People on here have usually been right about good and strong FO's. I only wish I had found this board sooner. It would have saved me a lot of money on dud scents! LOL! Keep us all posted as to how you're doing!
  13. Michele, I hope I didn't confuse you more with my less than professional advice! ) I should've started thinking how I was almost a year ago when I knew nothing about wax. I was fortunate enough to have bought some recipes for tarts off of a website and the owner helped me tremendously! I still message her with questions and she is always very helpful. I at least had those recipes to go by and links as to where and what to buy and how to blend. Candybee is right in her advice. I jumped in blending only because I had instructions on what to do in those recipes I bought. Also, I'm basing my instructions on paraffin or a para/soy tart wax. I didn't stop and think that you might be using straight soy. There are a lot of people on here that do and can give you great advice on what to do. I've never used all soy. I started out using a para/soy blend but switched to all paraffin. You'll love the wax world! It does become an addiction with all the FO's! Just curious, if you don't mind me asking, what fragrances and wax did you buy?
  14. Hi Michele! Glad to have you on the board! I'm kind of new myself. I've been making tarts since September and am now trying my hand at candles. When I blend waxes, I put both into the pot at the same time and just let them melt together, whether it's a high melt point wax or container wax. I generally use more HMP wax than container wax for my tarts that I pour into a mold only because I don't like the way they smudge the bags. If I'm pouring into clamshells then I use about 50/50. As far as fragrance load, I use about 1-1.5 oz per pound with tarts regardless of the wax. I just make sure I stir really well to blend the FO with the wax. I add FO at 180-185 so it will blend. I haven't used a presto pot with a spout, just the other kind. I ladle the melted wax into a glass measuring cup, add dye and FO and stir. When it's cooled enough, then I pour into clamshells. If I'm pouring into silicone molds I don't have to let it cool down but if you pour into clamshells too hot they'll warp. You will get a lot of help from people on here. Everyone is very nice and willing to help! HTH
  15. Jackie, For some reason I always have trouble smelling them here at home as opposed to melting them at work. I think it's because I'm also smelling all of the FO's coming from my craft room and I get used to the smell. When I burn tarts at work they always smell stronger to me than at home. I had one burning the other day and I'm thinking it isn't putting off much of a smell and that I probably won't make any more of this FO, etc. and a friend of mine walks in and tells me as soon as she walked through the front door she could smell it! LOL! So I guess it will be a keeper after all. I get paranoid about not being able to smell mine very much and when I get testers to smell them they talk about how good they are (of course some FO's are stronger than others). I think we just get immune to all of the different smells.
  16. Thanks Karen! I knew there was an easier way than for me to try and figure it out! LOL!
  17. Hi Jackie, I'm kind of new too but maybe I can help a little. What kind of wax are you using? Is it soy, paraffin or a combo? If I'm not mistaken, the FO should be added at a high enough temp to blend in with the wax. I usually try to add mine at about 180 and stir for 2 minutes. I use paraffin so if you're using all soy it could be a lower temp to add FO. As far as figuring the amount, I'm not real sure how to tell you to do that one. I know when I melt wax and pour into a 16 oz measuring cup that I get about 5 clamshells that are about 3 ounces each. This isn't a quite a pound of wax though. Melted wax makes about 20 ounces per pound if I remember right. I add 1 ounce FO to the melted wax. So I would guess that you need to use about 1/5th or 1/6th of an ounce of Fo to make one clamshell. This may not be right so maybe someone that has a lot more experience and good at math will post their advice. ) HTH
  18. Karen on your list the only ones I've tried are funnel cake-loved it! lemon sugar bundt cake-good! I think I like other lemon pound cakes better but it's still good, I have mabels mint sugar cookie. Smells ok OOB but I mixed Mrs. Claus cookies and peppermint meringue (JS) and I like it better. Vanilla Butter fudge-great scent but to me it is kind of weak but it could just be my methods. It gets good reviews on here. Bird of Paradise-really smells nice! That's the only ones on your list that I've bought or tried. HTH
  19. This is what I've tried and love! Toasted marshmallow Birthday Cake (Snc) Celtic Moonspice Dream catcher pumpkin butter brûlée Amaretto Amaretto Tiramusu Southern Pecan pie Kickin Caramel Amish Quilt Banana Walnut Cake Candied ginger Funnel Cake Key Lime I don't think you can go wrong with them! HTH
  20. Thanks! I sent an email to www.candleclamshells.com and they assured me that theirs do not have a plastic smell. I'm placing an order with candle science for wicks so I might just get some of theirs to try first. Thanks again!
  21. I've ordered from ICS and cajun. Cajun's had a strong plastic smell to me. I catch a slight whiff from ICS but not as strong as Cajun's. Are there clamshells that don't have a plastic smell to them at all? I've read about some on www.candleclamshells.com. Has anyone used theirs? Thanks!
  22. Texas Candle Supply-I've only bought 3 of his oils but they've been strong and he has some different scents. Houston Candle Supply-I like everything I've bought from them also.
  23. Theirs is the only pie crust I've tried and I think it's great! I can send you a sample of caramel cookie!
  24. I really love sugar cookie dough! I have a sample of SVS, Vanilla Cake pops and I think apple brown betty (I'll have to check) but have never put them in wax. Blackberry Jam butter cookies is really good IMO. Smells just like Daystars to me. I think DS's might be a little stronger but if it is, not much. I love their pie crust FO too. I've used it as a mixer but not alone but it smells really good all by itself OOB. I have a bottle of caramel cookie and loved it at first (even wrote a review on it) but I'm not too crazy about it now. Not sure why. I probably need to melt another tart made in that. I liked their Frosted sugar cookie better than Gourmet sugar cookie. I think I have a bottle of their white cake or birthday cake but can't remember if I liked them or not. I'll have to check. I don't think you'll be sorry with any of those, especially BBJBC and SCD! Love those! And since we both seem to like bakery scents I think you'll like them too. BBJBC's is kind of sweet but so good!
