1. I'm the one who will tell you go ahead and start blending once you have the FOs. Might as well just get used to doing it ya know if that's what you want. Since shipping into Canada is going to draw customs you might want to not start with 1 oz samples. It won't be enough to start blending other fragrances you may want. Just my opinion. If you look for U.S. suppliers, make sure they ship to you. and yeah, stay away from craft store fragrances. Spend your money more wisely.
2. The FO from OT that I have was renamed Twilight and I could not find much on how it soaped. I was hoping to get the greens and dark blue to stick along with the bronze. I think bronze survived the best lol. Can't really pick out much of the charcoal either. Really thinking probably too much color on these. Time will tell. A better look at the bottom from the end cuts
3. We shrink wrap the votives also. We don't put a label on it that says to remove packaging though.
4. You need to remove the packaging because paper gets hot and will burn.
5. Here's the thing, so what if it only gets used a couple of times. It becomes a tent you can count on, you know it's problems and FYI, Ez-ups have their own bags, sidewalls, some have a banner option. They all come with stakes, usually not plastic (at least ours were always metal.) THey are sturdy, they can be abused and you can send to get replacement parts. You can easily apply extra weights with gallons of water or make cement pots to hook to cords etc. It's how you elect to care for it, but if shows aren't something you find you want to do ... go without a tent completely. It adds to your bottom dollar to rent. To buy it's a long term investment that we haven't regretted. Our first tent was a pop up something that completely collapsed after springing leaks at a craft show. We had to stand in it and push parts of the roof up so that it wouldn't sag under the weight of water. It was a real pain to redo a lot of labels because we thought we'd save a buck. Before we left town we owned our first ez-up and fell in love with it. We've been in rain and winds with it, had to replace a part here and there but overall it was the best investment we ever made. We go indoors starting in november, but our show season starts usually in April. it used to be March, but those were indoors. April starts our outdoor season.
6. Sounds familiar. Trying to remember where I've seen it. Did you buy anything out of Texas? Or lotion tubes?
7. There's a link from that facebook site that I've copied to share here. This is not going to help in Mass., but it does affect the Safe Cosmetic Act for 2011. Regardless of where you live, what happens nationally and in other states will affect you if you sell: This does not appear to work for state bills, but you can tell congress to oppose HR 2359 Safe Cosmetics Act of 2011 here: https://www.popvox.com/bills/us/112/hr2359 click the link and hit "oppose"
8. The % are changing, but people need to continue to be in contact with your legislatures. Apparently things are about to go hog wild throughout several states with Calif. adding more, Mass. is trying to get to bat etc. As far as this bill goes: (copied from Facebook where there is a specific State Cosmetics Law page (and go like it!): This does not appear to work for state bills, but you can tell congress to oppose HR 2359 Safe Cosmetics Act of 2011 here: https://www.popvox.com/bills/us/112/hr2359 click the link and hit "oppose"
9. http://www.facebook.com/State.Cosmetics.Laws?sk=wall Join the page to keep updated if you haven't already. You may not live in Mass, but that does not mean you won't be affected should their law pass.
10. http://essentialu.typepad.com/my_weblog/2011/09/speak-out-about-massachusetts-ho2361.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+EssentialUBlog+%28Essential+U+Blog%29&utm_content=Yahoo%21+Mail Man this is scary!
11. Curious to see the progress. I'm imagining a small wick to wind around to the wood wick. No additives?
12. Those of you doing spoon swirls made me want to try. The log. Scented with Zen Tea, but I'm simplifying it to Zen. Not sure the colors match, but I have too many green and blue scents. I wasn't thinking this was much of a dramatic swirl method based on the end cuts, but... I cut anyway and found other things inside. So it occurs to me that one can be a lot more creative with this spoon thing if one actually wants to spend some time thinking about better placements. Try not to see the porn in this ... it was unintentional. However, I think the bottom bar may have the outline of the tongue from Tattoo You.
13. Anyone here want to run a craft class in our special section on how to make a basic necklace (something with just basic beads I think)? I can read all I want, but I still need to see a basic necklace put together to have my light bulb burn brighter.
14. This is just something that can happen to people making claims without thinking ... I know the people at work won't remember one iota about the argument I had with them back when they did an article on elderberry ... but my ears perked up when this was on the news. http://www.kansas.com/2011/09/03/2000775/kansas-winery-feds-reach-deal.html Sorry I hijacked!
15. Best money I ever spent was with someone else!
16. I've heard they do, but can't make claims on them ya know.
17. Thanks all! This moved to the pudding stage and stayed until it went to bed. The scent though is actually Sun, Moon & Stars, but it takes up too much room lol. So I wanted a galaxy name of some sort but it has to be on the verge of womanly as this is not a man's scent.
18. I'm thinking maybe just simplifying it to that lol.
19. You could take a look at TKB Trading, others use celestial colors, I use a mix of TKB's micas, ultramarines, oxides and Select Shades, but I can't tell you where to get SS. (I haven't looked.) I guess because I thought I read whoever was carrying them were slack in sending orders out and then I think someone said they weren't on the site any more. I never checked it out as I'm looking at using them up and going elsewhere.
20. You need to attribute Saponifer magazine for the above post. The initial post is what is in their magazine that just came out. You might also take a look at Kayla's blog at http://l.wbx.me/l/?p=1&instId=accc11e3-92e7-4ecb-9e1d-6188da18722e&token=fa85fde2aefecdb4ed8d38b43e2cf290aafa9fe8000001322020e3d1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fessentialu.typepad.com%2F She does have quite a few posts there to help understand the law. So do a few others. However, Kayla's blog is a good thing to belong to regardless. She covers quite a bit in it on various things so I would recommend getting on her list.
21. That's why the people on the hill need to hear your displeasure. The bill can't pass as written. AT least it's still in committee, but if your reps don't hear your concerns then they don't know any better. If your competition doesn't know about the bill and won't step in to voice their concerns then no wonder Washington is deaf, dumb and blind. It's up to those who do know to get the word out and not hope someone else will do it.
22. I think this is going to put a lot of us out of business ... myself included. I think for anyone thinking it will not affect you ... think again. This is an article in the latest Saponifier. Bill Summary To amend title VI of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to ensure the safe use of cosmetics, and for other purposes. Primary Sponsor Rep. Janice Schakowsky [D-IL9] Status This bill or resolution was assigned to a congressional committee on June 24, 2011, which will consider it before possibly sending it on to the House or Senate as a whole. It has been referred to the House Energy and Commerce committee and the House Education and the Workforce committee. The next vote on this bill will occur in the House of Representatives. Current Bill Popularity* 67% Support 33% Oppose Commentary Those who support H.R. 2359 do so with the belief that the legislation will: • Phase-out ingredients linked to cancer, birth defects and developmental harm; • Create a health-based safety standard that includes protections for children, the elderly, workers and other vulnerable populations; • Eliminate labeling loopholes by requiring full ingredient disclosure on product labels and company websites, including salon products and the constituent ingredients of fragrance; • Provide workers with access to information about unsafe chemicals in personal care products; • Require data-sharing to avoid duplicative testing and encourage the development of alternatives to animal testing; and • Provide adequate funding to the FDA Office of Cosmetics and Colors so it has the resources it needs to provide effective oversight of the cosmetics industry. Those opposed to H.R. 2359 do so with the belief that the legislation will: • Create label confusion by (a) not providing an exemption for contaminants that occur naturally in botanicals and ( generate labels which are confusing to the consumer due to a proliferation of components and contaminants of each ingredient, accompanied by percentages; • Cause unnecessary alarm in consumers by requiring the constituents and contaminants of all essential oils be listed, creating an ingredients list which will be impossible to recognize as a pure essential oil; • Place an unfair burden on the industry through duplicate registration of products, required under Section 619 for both the manufacturer and the distributor of a cosmetic, generating an additional expense at both levels which will be likely passed on to consumers; • Open small businesses to undue threat from negative reporting. Through ambiguous wording under Sec. 620, any individual who believes that a cosmetic is adulterated or misbranded and can present a reasonable probability that the use or exposure to the cosmetic or to any ingredient or component used within will cause a threat of serious adverse health effects or death has the right to turn the manufacturer or distributor in to the Secretary. This allows for any individual to report a company and places responsibility upon the company to defend perceived threats and possible inaccuracies; • Place insurmountable costs upon small businesses by requiring the safety testing of ingredients and finished products; • Open the industry to chaotic changes as the vague wording of the legislation allows the Secretary’s perception of an ingredient to be enough to issue an order to immediately cease distribution; and • Remove all consideration of intellectual property rights through the industry by requiring all ingredients be listed along with inclusion amounts. * Data provided by Polvox.com
23. I read that as they tried to replace the component that gives it the spice and it didn't work in their product so they were not going to offer an inferior product by their standars. The shortage is on eugenol, which basically is clove oil.
24. That's actually not a bad price for 10 lbs of butters and whatever else you got. Sounds like it came via USPS flat rate box maybe. I was wondering why you don't like CG. I've always gotten my stuff in reasonable fashion. I do like their prices and they are shipping to the center of the world so to speak.
