  1. Hey everyone - I thought this could be a fun thread! Post your throwbacks here! Any craft, any past time period (which can be as soon as yesterday, last week, last month, last year or several years ago!) I'll start! The first picture is a pic of my very first soaps I ever made. Second pic is the last soap I made a couple weeks ago. My how times have changed!! I'm also going to post one of my very first gel candles which was embedded with paraffin jelly beans. It looked great after first pouring, but about a month later the gel leached out all the color of the jelly beans and turned a murky greenish brown. I threw them out. LOL Now it's your turn! Let's see your throwbacks!
  2. They look really good IMO. The true test will be the test burn, but I like the look. From what I can see, no repour was/is necessary, so good job!!
  3. As ChrisR said, having an LLC will not prevent someone for suing,it is not a replacement for product liability insurance, and unless you obey the "rules" of an LLC it won't protect your personal property or money either. You have to keep everything separate from your LLC and personal, including bank accounts, work area (if you work out of your home, if you are an LLC you have to have a dedicated space you work from, not your kitchen) and bookkeeping - for instance, if you use personal money to buy supplies, you have to pay your LLC then use it out of that bank account, otherwise, in case of a lawsuit, it's all susceptible to being part of the lawsuit.
  4. Some sort of status or straight sided jar screams upscale to me, but I don't know how inexpensive that would be to find a lid, jar cost itself, etc.,
  5. I use apothecaries and status jars mostly. They aren't necessarily my favorite, but ti's what sells, so I stick with it. My personal favorites are my seashell jars (see pic) but those dont' sell hardly at all, and when they do, they have to be spa/water type scents, and I like putting all type of scents in them. (Not a great pic, but it came from my old website and the only one I have of them at the moment)
  6. I agree. I do too. I also didn't notice the typo until it was pointed out.
  7. You're welcome. I found her blog site to be invaluable when I started making lotions... It was a godsend in researching.
  8. If you mean every oil so you know what properties, there are a few of them, I'll try to find some and link you (however it might not be until tomorrow as I'm ready to head out), but any oil can be made into a scrub. if it's going to be introduced to water at all it will need a preservative, but you also need to take into consideration the shelf-life of the oil, which the listing should show. (If not that's easy enough to look up once you determine an oil you are interested in). To start you off, this site has a LOT of very useful information on oils for lotions and scrubs... Take a look around. http://swiftcraftymonkey.blogspot.com/ And this page of hers has a listing of oils. http://swiftcraftymonkey.blogspot.com/2009/03/oils-short-guide.html
  9. It depends for me. The only wax I need repours on is my pillars, but I do as Vicky and let it cool between pours, because it does take a little while before it's time for a repour. Also, if it's container wax, and you need a repour, unless it's designed that way you may be pouring too hot. If not, and it is designed that way, the repour will be on top and you want that as strong as possible, so I would let it cool and then reheat. You will not compromise the wax by doing it that way, so don't worry about that, but leaving it warming, you very well could burn off enough FO that it wont' give off a very strong cold throw once cooled. HTH and welcome to the addiction!
  10. So pretty. Can't wait to see them cut..
  11. Gel safe really has more to do with the polarity of the scent, so as a topper it's fine. Most "Gel Safe" scents mean they will not cloud the gel and will remain clear. There are other factors of course, but that is the main one.
  12. Now through October depending on where you are. Some are only during harvest, some year round, but the most popular ones run from about now to beginning of October.
  13. you would ruin the properties of butters and oils long before hitting a flash point. Flash point is the lowest possible temp that an oil will spontaneously combust when introduced to a spark, and really has nothing to do with melting them. (and is more commonly used and needed to know for shipping purposes in case they would be shipped airborne) Here is a chart that will probably help answer your question better than I can. However, this is for cooking - but it will give you the smoke point (no flash point associated with them, but that would be higher even still) http://jonbarron.org/diet-and-nutrition/healthiest-cooking-oil-chart-smoke-points#.VQWSz47F9ic
  14. Very nice - good luck. Sounds like a great opportunity if it works out. Out of all the pics of the candle, I like the one with the black lid and the gold bow. But they are all nice. Very nice.
  15. I think it looks great. Didn't even think anything of your faux pas about the 3-wicks. LOL I also think once you put those wicks closer together it will 'fix' a lot of the problems you are having and you may not need to add a wick. And sorry, but no, I don't use that jar.
  16. I post a lot of them in the old style soap gallery. I don't really make M&P though. It's mostly CP. I use M&P for embeds though, and just recently created my own made from scratch M&P without using any solvents. YAY... (We'll see how it works in CP as embeds this week! )
  17. Thanks for sharing Karen. I had no idea - had never even heard of it.
  18. I'm not sure it can be done. IDK I've never seen it and as you said, to get it so you can cut it, it would be too soft. If you want to do that to sell by the oz or something, I would think wax chips or pellets would be a better, less messy option.
  19. I wish I was half as good at M&P soapmaking as you and I've been soaping for 12 years now!! LOL Your work is awesome.
  20. I don't make them, but if I did, I would shrink wrap them first, and then bubble wrap with a lot of peanuts in a snug box that isn't too big. That way they aren't moving around in the box and are pretty secure.
  21. Hi everyone! What is everyone up to this weekend? For me I'm hoping that I can get some stuff done, but I think it will only be cleaning my soap/candle room. Tomorrow is our big St. Pat's celebration, so I'll be downtown most of the day. I'm also in a wine club and tomorrow is the pick up party, so I'll be there in the afternoon, and I know I will not feel like doing anything after I get home, so I'll have to do it all on Sunday. I'm going gambling with my mom today (went with best friend on Wednesday - I promise I'm not addicted! LOL But it is fun) Also this evening we need to pick up my daughters car, go pay for the carpet and set up the installation appt. I think my hub will be doing the tile and installing the toilets this weekend also. My anniversary is Tuesday, but not sure we are doing anything. We usually just do everything the day of the parade and go downtown and get crazy. That's the best anniversary I could ask for. LOL As far as actual crafts - I'll probably get to making during my last week of unemployment. I have 2 container candles I need to make for my hairdresser, and I want to make a couple tester palm pillars now that I have some wicks to test. I want to make at least 3 loafs of soap. 1 being the location soap I've been threatening to make. I'm not sure about the other 2, but I'll figure something out. What about everyone else? What's on your agenda? Anything crafty?
  22. I have a hard time with orange too, which is why I mix TKB's neon orange with Orange oxide. works great to get a true orange, and not flesh color.
