  1. Very colorful! It certainly would catch the eye. Glad you made a little for your habit! If you would like a bigger sign on your clamshell display, I came across a solution to the drooping. I printed a sign on cardstock 7 x 8-1/2. It wanted to flop over so I cut 2 drinking straws to 6" and cut a slit in each. Slide the straws over the edges of the cardstock and it stands right up! Good luck on your next show!
  2. Wow! This thread was entertaining and informative. In my experience, soy people want soy candles and paraffin people want paraffin candles. They have already made up their minds and citing facts, figures and studies don't seem to have much influence. So, I thought the site was different, and we are all looking to stand out. My only complaint was how big was "small" or "large". I did find it today - I have to pick one to find out how big it is. I didn't like that much - I want the info upfront. But, you state the sizes as 3-1/2, 4-1/2 ect. Your mold is that size, but I bet your candles aren't. By the time they shrink and you level them, they are under that. Fair labeling act says you can round down, but not up.
  3. Personally, I think they look cool and project a calming atmosphere. I didn't even notice Autumn was spelled wrong and I'm usually a stickler for that. I have learned to always hit spell check when I'm printing a label. If you are going to stick with the paper, try buying some art sealing spray. Spray the backs after you cut. Good luck at the market...your candles are great!
  4. I'm really not into the bears, but that is awfully darn cute. I would caution you about using the name Red Hat Society, though . It is trademarked and protected. I made some red and purple pillars for my show recently. Made them in Passionate Kisses - called it Hugs & Kisses. They were one of the first to sell. Red Hat ladies are 50 and over and one of their sayings is, "It's never too late to have a happy childhood". Please don't think old ladies in the lavendar, lilac sense. Make it cinnamon and call it "Hot Flashes" - they will love it!
  5. I think you would have to go to a smaller zinc....
  6. Sorry your day was bad, but that is pretty awesome about the store. Hope that works out well for you and good luck next weekend!
  7. here's my understanding...If they are buying something of value and the procedes will be donated, they cannot use it as a tax deduction. Buying Girl Scout cookies is not tax deductable; making a cash donation to the Girl Scouts is. You are not selling to a tax exempt organization, so you must charge sales tax. If you give money to someone, it is a gift not a tax deduction. It must be a recognized charitable organization in order to qualify for a charitable deduction. You are doing a good deed and only the people that SHOULD benefit from it will benefit from it.
  8. Peak sells 'em - they are under accessories
  9. Interesting...My house, car and two kids cars are through State Farm, but they wouldn't insure the candle biz "because I use heat". I told them I can't cook, but they have insured my house for years! They did steer me to an independent agent, though, and coverage was $850 a year.
  10. http://www.candletech.com/cgi-local/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=veggiewax;action=display;num=1092424758;start=13#13 I found the thread to be very informative...braided wicks are not directional - the V is up on one side, down on the other...RRD wicks are directional...I put a dot with a marker where I cut so I am sure to put the tab on the correct end.
  11. I have a piece of 3x3 steel angle about 9" long. Put the cookie sheet on top of a pan of water with a paper towel on top. I stand the angle on end with the level stuck to the side (the level has a magnet). The candle sits in the crook of the angle, the angle is level, the candle gets level. I do turn the candle as I am leveling to make sure I get the same reading everywhich way.
  12. I can't stand peach, but dang, I love them pillars!
  13. Holy Mackerel, indeed! Those are great. And, I want to be where ever those candles are....beautiful.
  14. I LOVE making pillars. I would make pillars even if no one ever bought them. I was at a two days arts and crafts festival last weekend. I was featuring my pillars and hurricanes. I only sold one hurricane and pillars flew off the shelves. I came home after the first day and made more pillars. Pillars can be as complicated or easy as you make them. A plastic container full of rice or beans makes a great tilt base. Put the mold in at an angle and it stays there. Make a solid pillar, smooth, mottled or rustic...make straight layers... make tilted layers...make distinct layers or blended layers. I just love the creativity of pillars and it's just like Christmas when you take it out of the mold! ps I have round molds for sale in the classifieds....
  15. Yee Haw!!! You done good! I'm so happy my molds have found a happy home. Love the colors. Pillars are adictive, watch out!
  16. Goodness! Have you read the info on candle cauldren? All the way down on the right http://www.candlecauldron.com/ there is a receipt form there...I print some and give them to the organizer. Whether they use them or not, I can't say. Never thought about the dishonest kid...suppose it could happen, but I don't think it would make YOU look bad. I deliver in cases and supply white T-shirt bags I give them a list of 12 scents and let them pick 6 My candles have warning labels with my business info...I dont' include cards. I also print the order form on one side with scents and descriptions, pics and biz info on the other side. It folds in half nicely. Make sure checks are payable to the organization and they give you one BIG check. Make sure it clears.
  17. Yup - you did it backwards...but don't feel bad. Most of us started out with some bad ideas about how easy it is to make candles. But you're here and reading. That's a good forward step! Welcome to the board and our addiction! we might be addicted to smilies, too. :rolleyes2
  18. Testing double wicked apothacary jars...and a thought occured to me that I don't remember seeing anything about. Do you put anything different on the warning label for double wicked candles?
  19. OH WOW I really like those! I love all the texture and mottle. I wanna go play now!
  20. Stealing on is an option... I have two - a candy thermometer that sits on the presto for "in the ball park" and a digital that I use to check for more accuracy. If you have a candy thermometer, make sure you have one that the paper with the degrees is glued in place. I had one with staples that moved! I could have my wax at 180* and that darn thing would register anywhere from 160-220. Threw it out. I have heard of a digital that will clip on the presto, but I have yet to find one.
  21. I would think it would be a bit trickier with votives as they are very small and get liquidy (liquidy? is that a word?) very quickly. I have done pillars with 3 scents, you smell one, then a blend, then the second, etc.
  22. Empty and cleaned kitty litter containers work well for storage, too. I did like the idea of the glad containers. Personally, I just buy more prestos - one for every occasion, fill 'em up and I'm good to go! Yes, Mystical, you are easily amused and I want to know how YOU know a dead body will fit in that bag?
  23. Oh, the possibilities! What the heck is with the carpeted box, though? Enamel paint would brighten, clean it up bunches...cheap route, butcher paper. I see wax and jar storage on the right, FO and accessories on the left. Milk crates on their side make great stands for prestos and pour pot and scale store in the crate for added workspace. I wouldn't put them under the stairs as going up and down may cause dust and debri to fall in your wax. Maybe a narrow short shelf there for supplies... It is sort of how mine is layed out, except for a carpeted box, I have a CD player in the corner!
  24. Can't say about the salts... Since they are wrapped in paper, I will assume you are talking about pillars. The cold throw will fade a bit, but if it was a good hot throw a year ago, it should still be a good hot throw now. Light one of those puppies up and see! (Good assumption, huh? I just saw your title "candles are pillars")
  25. wow! nothing like jumpin' in with both feet! That's pretty big for a first show. Glad to hear you did well. Get some rest, tomorrow will probably be busier!
