  1. aaah, when life hands you lemons... ...drink wine in the rain! Congrats on your wedding and your festival day. And keep looking for those rainbows!
  2. Good advice, Carmen. I also read on the website to bring business cards for networking and if you are an Illinois resident, bring your resale certificate to avoid paying sales tax. And don't forget your camera!
  3. I do remember someone having an issue with some. I believe they had stress cracks in the corner that were visible. I check my jars for cracks and have never had a problem with them.
  4. http://www.candletech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1737 This states that the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act specifically applies to candles. OK, so the fine print says it is an "act" not a "law". And Illiminations is another example that just adds to the inconsistencies. I'm beginning to think if I'm TRYING to do the right thing, I must be succeeding. And yes, I am weighing the wax. While the jar is part of the candle, it is not consumable. Net Wt is the wax and wick. (It would be tough to sell a can of chicken soup without the can, but the weight listed is the soup.)
  5. I'm doing this because I am trying to grow a respectable business and labeling correctly is part of it. Actually, hammers do list weights. My question was "does it have to be on the top label with my logo". Thanks for sharing your opinion. Lynn, Roxie, thanks for your thoughts!
  6. I know you guys are lawyers or play one on TV, but I need another opinion. I have been redesigning my labels (trying to make them right) and reading legalese till I'm spinning. My question is about the net wt of a jar candle. I have a scent label on top with my logo. On the bottom is the warning label with addy and net wt. this paragragh throws me... (2) The net quantity of contents (in terms of weight or mass, measure, or numerical count) shall be separately and accurately stated in a uniform location upon the principal display panel of that label, using the most appropriate units of both the customary inch/pound system of measure, as provided in paragraph (3) of this subsection, and, except as provided in paragraph (3)(A)(ii) or paragraph (6) of this subsection, the SI metric system Does my weight have to be on top with the scent? I have cruised a bunch of websites looking at candles. I see very few with the weight by the scent. Even Yankme is inconsistant. I don't want to redo these again...any thoughts?
  7. Check Michaels.com Top right is a link to this weeks ad. They run different sale prices in different areas of the country. Put in your zip code, pick a store and see the ad. I have no ad this week - it says to check back on Sunday August 7
  8. I found my 4' at Kmart last year and got my 5' from Sams. You need to make sure they are weather proof - humidity and heavy candles won't mix.
  9. Taylored Concepts Candles & Soap Making Supplies, Inc. here in Dallas, Texas website is http://www.tayloredconcepts.com/index.htm http://www.alabastercandlesupply.com/index.php Alabaster in Alabama and Kentucky
  10. Yeah, their website says they are extruded. Try vertical layers and see how close you can get...
  11. I'm not sure they sell them separately, but have you tried Freund Can Company?1-800-363-9822 Their 16 oz tins measure 4 x 2-3/8 if that helps.
  12. I have a couple of reasons for using 1343/223 blend. 1343 doesn't have a high enough fo load by itself, I like the appearance that adding 1/4 223 gives and I already have those two waxes so I combine them rather than buying a totally different wax. I've never had a problem, except with my nose!
  13. I was looking for the links and got distracted in my favorites... http://www.candlemaking.org.uk/candleparties.html http://www.bestofboards.com/ Lots of info on these, maybe you will find something
  14. Definately get someone else to try 'em. Do you have an electric or tealight burner? Sometimes, in lighter scents, I think the tealights work better. But then again, maybe it's just MY nose!
  15. Funny how your thinking starts to revolve around candles, huh? I add UV to my prestos everytime I add wax, so yes, I have it in all testers. In my experience it hasn't affected the burn any and I believe I have read that others are of the same opinion. And yes, UV inhibitor goes in the votive pot, the pillar pot, the container pot and the hurricane pot. Shelf life I have heard varying opinions. All I can tell you is I have opened and burned jars two years later and they still smell great. Soy tends to morph more than parafin, I think...gets frosty. Hope you had a great unwind!
  16. I found this link... http://www.hp.com/sbso/productivity/office/brochure.html ms.com also has templates I just use word in landscape..set up 3 columns with 1" between. Well, that is for a tri-fold.
  17. http://www.candletech.com/cgi-local/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=Discussions;action=display;num=1111621340;start=16#16 You can still search. Click the archives link at the bottom of this page, then click on the archives at the bottom of the list that appears.
  18. LOL! Stop pulling your hair out. I'm not sure I can really help since you have read all the tips and tricks. But you might be on to something with the paper. I just use standard copier paper. I think it's like 20 lb. Actually, I save stuff from work that was printed on half a page...it's scrap paper and it works great. Make sure your mold is warm and the wax is hot. I use a spoon on the inside and a cold wash cloth on the outside. I can't imagine a patent holding up on these. It's like the dipped bears. People have been doing them forever and you wax, additives, etc aren't EXACTLY like hers so you aren't violating. JMO
  19. Dinking around? I love your fabulous pillars! So creative and colorful. Great job!
  20. I would melt the full amount a wax needed and put the addititves in, then in a pour pot measure, color and scent what you need for each layer. Because of the shape of the mold, if you want even layers, you will probably have to do a logic puzzle....divide your mold in thirds. Fill the bottom third with water. Pour the water into a measuring cup and divide by 1.25. That will give you ounces of wax for that layer. Pour the water back in the mold. Add enough water to fill 2/3. Pour out what you measured for the first layer. Pour the rest in a measuring cup and divide by 1.25 for ounces of wax for the second layer. Add your two layers together and subtract from the total amount of wax to get the amount for the third layer. Or just divide your total wax by 3 and see how it turns out!
  21. I put 8 oz jelly jars and 6 oz tins. Both were made with J223. They were just sitting on the side shelf of my grill on the back patio. They weren't in direct sunlight, either. When the sun came over to that side (about 4 pm) I put up the umbrella.
  22. Don't bet on it! We cooled off to 80+ today! I actually left a couple of candles outside as a test....2 days at 98*. no seeping, no melting, I'm not sure we ever cooled off to the dew point, but the labels are fine, too.
