  1. Hi Jen! Welcome to the board. Everyone has given you great advice to start off with so I can't think of much to add. Taking notes is SO important. That's great you got a kit because when I started, I got some things off Ebay so I didn't know what kind of wicks I had. Then I found out just how important that is. I still can't decide which type of container jars I want to use-always testing! Have fun.
  2. I haven't tried any FOs from Candles and Supplies buy did try EL Soy and liked it very much. Lavender from Candle Science, and Summer Citrus from Bittercreek had great throw.
  3. Thanks for the reply CandleMan. I did a search on several boards but was hoping to find more opinions before I got started. I would like to use more soy than paraffin because I am really just trying to get rid of frosting issues. I think I need to start adding uv inhibitor also to prevent color fading. The manuf says to use .02% per 1/2 lb - I think I need to add 1/2 tsp? I really suck at math and my scale displays in fractions not decimals. I thought I would try 70% soy/30% paraffin first and eliminate the BW I have been adding to prevent frosting.
  4. Hello everyone, I have been using ezsoy but have tired of frosting and color changes after burning. I just got some j223 and 415 and am going to try this combo. I have read different things on mixing and pouring. What would you recommend to start with? I thought I would try a 50/50 mix first. I am unsure about the following: what temp to heat to, when to add dye (I use liquid dyes) and fo and when to pour. Also do I need to continue heating jars? I am assuming the cure time would be less. I know this is a lot of questions-any help would be greatly appreciated!
  5. Good morning, I have read the white lines that occur after candle has burned and cooled is b/o the temp. of the melt pool. I hate the way it looks! I use ezsoy and liquid dyes. Anyone know how to prevent or lessen this? I read where 1 person had some results w/ universal additive. Thanks.
  6. Keep tryng! And take good notes. You WILL eventually produce a nice candle and it will make you so happy.
  7. I like all of the scents I have tried from BCN & BCS so far.
  8. Hi everyone, I have been searching all morning trying to find a supplier for metro/status jar in the southeast (I live on the florida gulf coast). I am looking for frosted and clear. All I can find is Carolina Candle Supplies in NC (clear 8oz); Taylored concepts in Dallas (clear 9 & 12oz); Candlescience in NC (clear 12oz). There is also Fancy Candles in Illinois (frosted, clear 8 & 12oz) and Candles and Supplies in PA (clear 10oz) and the Jar Store. Does anyone know any others that carry these jars? I have some other jars from the Jar Store and have had no probs with them but they are very thin and lightweight and of course shipping. Thanks for any info.
  9. Hi darindab! Didn't know we were neighbors. Somehow I missed these posts, had to go out of town for awhile and just found it. I will check out Candlescience. I really like BCS but they don't carry everything I need and hate to order from BCN but love their fos. Woundn't it be great if you could get everything you need from one place?
  10. I use 1oz/lb so far but I haven't testing all of my fo yet.
  11. I haven't seen those other sizes but I'm still looking for jars I like closer to home. Hope you find em.
  12. I use the wick stickums from BCS and haven't had one float on me yet.
  13. txht2003, I little jar 2nd from right (blue candle) came from www.thejarstore.com . It is a 5oz clear seamless bean pot w/ flat lid. Shipping was a buggar all the way down here to Florida but I just love the way they look.
  14. ForHisGlory, I got them at www.WholesaleSuppliesPlus.com . It is the 9oz straight sided round jar with 70/400 lid. I still havent decided how I'm going to use it.
  15. Hi everyone, I'm real interested in learning how to make that. I've been researching the topic and of course there is so much different information to choose from. Where do you get the supplies? Can they be purchased at local stores or do they have to be ordered?
  16. Hi Bill, Thanks for responding. That is the one I was talking about. I don't have a supplier yet so I'm looking for one near me on the gulf coast. I long for the day when I can get everything I need at one location (within short driving distance). Not asking for much am I?
  17. Candlemaking For Fun & Profit is a good book to start with. I think I bought it used at Amazon.
  18. Not confusing me at all, I am digging the responses! I don't like the white lid either and am not going to use it. When you use several kinds of jars, do you offer every scent in each jar? Thanks.
  19. Hi starlessjade, I'm still a newbie too but have been testing for several months now and it is very frustrating. If I would have known then what I know now I would have saved a lot of money and time. Anyhoo, here is how I do it. First I see what manuf. recommends for the jar, then do a search and try to find posts for the jar, scent and wick that has worked for someone else (hard to find). If it's a new test candle, I will place just the wick in wax (as it hardens) so I can pull it out and replace w/ different size if needed. When I think I have it right, pour a new candle w/ wick anchored to jar this time and burn completely. I have a notebook that I write everything in for each candle. Bittercreek has a great candle test sheet I print out and use. They also have info for guidelines on what to look for when burning such as melt pool, flame size, etc. HTH.
  20. ForHisGlory, The big round purple you like is only .70 w/ lid at Alabaster. Seems like a good price but I am still learning, searching. I don't have a shop yet but have an opportunity to open one late spring. I am no where near ready for that yet. I am thinking about going dyeless b/o frosting being such a PITA. Do you think that would matter? Thanks for the input.
  21. I have been using tealights from BCS with no problems at all. They are the metal tealight cups with T330 tea light wicks.
  22. Thanks for your responses! It really helps to get opinions from you all.
