  1. Is this a good soy wax to use? Can anyone share with me their experience with this wax? How does it compare to Ecosoya CB Advanced? Thanks, Jen
  2. Suzy, In regard to scent throw...I'm guessing I made the classic newbie mistake and burned my candle after only a day and a half. LOL! The scent is strong when it was cold, but once I lit my candle, it was very weak. Every once in a while I would get a whiff of the scent, otherwise not really. I burned my candle again yesterday and once it cooled the top was pretty smooth. I'm using Ecosoya CB Advanced Soy. I poured my second candle on Monday night, and I am definitely following the advice of waiting at least a week to burn it.
  3. When pouring container candles that have lids. Do you put the lid on the container while you let the wax cure? I wasn't sure if this was a good or bad thing to do. Thanks! Jen
  4. I did a test burn yesterday on my first candle. After the first test burn the candle looked fine, but after the second test burn, it looked similar to what you have here!! I'm burning it again today, so I'll see how it looks and let you know.
  5. Thanks everyone. I figured that's what it was, but just needed confirmation. I'm still trying to learn all the terms. I looked at the wick guide on candle science, and the wick that came with my kit is considered "acceptable" for the candle diameter, but I may pick up some sample wicks based on what candle science says is the best to use for my size candles. Tangerine...I will pay attention to the wax when I light the candle again today. I think my first candle may be a dud in the scent department. I did a few things differently for the second candle I made last night. So we'll see in week how that goes. I'm all about the scent!! Besides the scent I'm extremely proud of my first candle!!
  6. It's a container candle, pure soy! My melt pool was exactly as you described...whew!! Unfortunately my wick doesn't look like it faired so well... Is this considered mushrooming?
  7. Thanks Nanny for asking this question. I'm test burning my first candle now, and not really smelling it...I too only let it cure for a little over 24hrs...I'm going to try a week for the next one! Thanks everyone for your help!
  8. what exactly am I looking for? I read up on candlescience to look at the melt pool and wick appearance. My candle is 3.5 in diameter, no color just scent (sugar cookie to be exact). But what about the melt pool am I looking for? And what about the wick exactly am I looking for? I took a picture when I first lit the candle, and I'm going to take pictures at 2hrs and 4 hrs after lighting. When I first lit the candle there was a little bit of black soot. Not good? Normal? Also, I'm roughly 45 min into it, and I can't really smell the scent. You could smell the scent just fine when it was cold. I can smell it when I get up real close to the candle. Thanks so much! Jen
  9. The perfectionist in me broke down and used the heat gun. It looks much better, and like Accents said, with it being white, I don't really see a difference in the look. Maybe some faint lines, but I really only see those when I'm looking at a certain angle. I'm reminding myself this is my first candle and it's ok to have imperfections! I just need to make a note to not make the wick so tight next time, at least the heat gun makes for an easy fix!! Thanks everyone for your help!!
  10. and how I can fix it? I'm wondering if I wrapped the wick around the stick to tight. Can I use a heat gun to fix it? This is my first candle so any help would be great!! Thanks, Jen
  11. and it was way cool!! LOL!! It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, not to say that it was easy! If you know what I mean? I'm ready for number 2!! Of course I'll wait and see how number 1 turns out first!! :-)
  12. The directions for the wax I have says to pour at 185-190. Is that too high? The wax is CB Advanced Soy.
  13. What do you mean by your "pour cool"? Does that mean you are heating your wax to a certain temp after you put in your scent and then cool it down to another temp? If so what temp?
  14. Hello all. I'm a newbie, I asked a few questions a couple of weeks ago, and now I have another question. I received my soy candle making kit in the mail today (woo-hoo). But before getting overly excited and rushing to make my first candle, I read the directions from where I got my soy kit from and I also re-read through the basic instructions here. I noticed that one step is to heat your container. I don't really hear people talk about this much, so I'm just curious.... Do people normally heat their containers? If so, do you use a heat gun or the oven? or something else? And finally...am I reading correctly, you heat the container right before you pour? This confused me a little because I was under the impression that once I've added my scent and dye, I should pretty much pour shortly after. So I didn't know if I took the extra step to heat my container, would that mean I'm waiting too long too pour. Thanks for your help! I've decided to wait until tomorrow evening to make my first candle. This way I have time to make sure I've got all my questions answered. :-)
