  1. I use both the liquid color and the dye flakes. I purchase the liquid color from Just by Nature, and the dye flakes from Kentucky Wax Candle Supply. Both color GREAT in the natural waxes.
  2. Looks like we have a discussion on selling/making frosted, minimal frosted, and no frosted soy candles, so I thought I would put in my 2 cents. Frosting is actually the "natural" bloom of a soy candle, and to be perfectly honest, if I did not see this in, or on a soy candle, I would not purchase it, especially if I am a dedicated soy candle burner. This is the "natural" progression of soy wax to acquire "bloom" just as beeswax does over time. I educate my customers on the "natural" progression of soy wax, and NONE of them, even my wholesale accounts, have a problem with the bloom. I think, we as candle makers, do not want to tolerate the bloom since it does not look "pretty". Well, as I have taught my daughter, "Looks aren't everything; it is what's within that counts." I do not add color to my soy container candles, which helps to reduce the educational process I dealt with when I did color my candles. Possibly, this is an avenue you may want to consider, if the bloom bothers you.
  3. I have used the KY Votive/Pillar wax for quite a few years now for my votives. I have found there is shrinkage, but very little. If using it for jars, I would definately continue to poke the relief holes though. HTH
  4. This will happen with all wicks that are blown out to one extent or the other. I educate my customers on how to extinquish their wick to eliminate the smoking. I tell them to dip the wick into their wax pool and then lift it back out. I also educate my wholesale accounts in this manner so they know what to tell the customers if this issue should ever arise. In the 6 years I have been selling candles; wholesale and retail, I have had only one customer return a candle with that excuse. The reason I say "excuse" is she also told the wholesale account she did not like the fragrance and wanted to return the candle. When the wholesale account told her she could not return it due to not liking the fragrance, she then told them the wick smoked when she "blew" it out. So, in reality, I did not have any customers returning candles due to smoking when the candle was extinquished. HTH
  5. After doing a search, I did find quite a few recommendations for "Strong & True" coffee fragrances. However, the waxes these fragrances were used in was not always posted. So, I would appreciate any help ya'll can give me for strong & true coffee fo's using soy wax. TIA
  6. Stella! Try Bed, Bath & Beyond. They had them on clearance for Christmas. Who knows they still may have some left...may even be cheaper now! Oh, and keep your head! :laugh2:
  7. Those are the only two companies I have found carrying the crystalline container wax. As far as wicks, cannot help there. Good luck!
  8. I wicked these triangles for quite some time using the cotton series. I found I did not get a full melt pool on the 1st, 2nd, and sometimes the 3rd burn depending on the fragrance and color used, but eventually the candle did catch up. If I wicked up trying to get a full melt pool on the 1st or 2nd burn, then I had sooting issues. If the 8 is working for you on the 2nd burn, I would go with it. Believe me, it will catch up. HTH
  9. I tested the SP487 a couple years ago, and even though, I loved the look of the candle, the scent throw was not as strong as the Kysoy125. I do not remember the cost of the wax. As far as coloring goes, it was pretty easy to color, so I would think any coloring would do for now, especially if you are only testing it for a trial run. You can always switch coloring, if you plan on using it. As far as wicking goes, I cannot find my notes, so I cannot help you there. On a personal note, if you are use to the scent throw you are getting from the Kysoy125, which I think it superb, you will be disappointed in the scent throw you get from the SP487 since it is not as strong. Don't misunderstand, the SP487 does throw, but not as well. HTH
  10. If you are asking Hubby for a turkey fryer, check out Bed, Bath & Beyond. They have a Masterbuilt on sale for $99.00 with a spout! If you have a 20% off coupon (comes in the mail), then it will only cost you $79.00. I checked them out this week, and they look like a great idea for melting wax. HTH
  11. Hello Chris: I always top off my votives. I pour up to where the votive mold starts to curve out; let it set up till you see cracking around the wick pin (cool/warm) , and then when topping it off, I pour until some of the votive wax spills over the side of the votive mold. I always have a nice looking votive when done this way. I pour my votives on a large aluminum tray, so I can scrap up the spilled over votive wax; remelt it, and pour into a tart mold. I usually end up with 1 - 2 tarts per 12 votive batch. I then sell the tarts, which is 100% profit, since the votive wax has already been paid for by the person buying the votives. HTH
  12. How are you doing Henry!? ANOTHER SUCCESS!! Those pillars are just gorgeous!
  13. YOU GO GIRL! :highfive: I always weigh my FO directly into the pour pot. I melt the wax in my presto pot; pour wax into pour pot and let cool to 180*; put pour pot on scale; tare it to zero, and then weigh my FO. Like you said, "No fuss, NO muss, and most important, NO leftover "expensive" fragrance. Fragrance is like Maxwell House coffee..."Good to the last drop!"
  14. Never cured my 415 candles before testing, and the throw was awesome! As long as you are using quality fragrance oils and the candles are wicked correctly, you should not have a throw problem with the 415. HTH
  15. Kelly: Here is a place in Pennsylvania. I have not personally ordered from them, but have heard they are reliable, and a good mold source. Hope this helps. http://www.rosescandles.com/molds_silicone.htm Here is another one. This supplier has also come recommended. This one is in Ohio. http://www.creativegemsmolds.com/store/ HTH
  16. What is the diameter of the tin? Are you using color? What fragrance load are you using? Can help if I have more information.
  17. I totally agree. Go take a look at Yankme and see all the wet spots, or any of the other name brand candles. It will make you feel soooooo much better! :highfive:
  18. Cotton wicks would be too hot for soy pillars...ask me how I know Personally, I have tried many of the soy pillar waxes out there and due to the short burns times before a blowout, or spillage, I decided to use a paraffin blended wax. My burn time increased by 3 hours per burn; maximum burn time 5 hours, could get away with 6 hours, but I do not suggest it on my warning label. The longest burn time I could get on the soy pillars is 3 hours and then all hell broke loose with blowouts and spillage. I said all this to say, if using a soy pillar wax, wick down! Have you tried the Premier wick line? There are a ton of different sizes, and they do burn well in the soy pillar wax. Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but hope this helps some!
  19. I have wicked the German Chocolate Cake (KY's) in a 3" diameter jar. I would start with a 62 cotton, and if that does not work, wick up to an HTP1212. Give your candle 2 - 3 burns before deciding the wick does not work unless it is just fizzling out on you. HTH
  20. When there isn't a man around, I slide mine down the stairs a step at a time...then slide them to my pouring area. I just slide on! I store my wax in the basement in my old laundry room...stays cooler in the summer, and even cooler in the winter, but not cold. I have stored in my garage with no problem too.
