Finally, rock hard balls! :)

Soap might have kicked patootie this weekend, but at least my bubble balls worked :yay: I went back to an original recipe that had citric acid in it (usually I don't use it), and no problems at all! Even played w/ color - I never did before but this time I added a drop of orange to test.

They look great! One word of advice, don't keep them in a ziplock bag closed. I did that with all of my bombs, that were completely hardened and the one bag puffed up and all the bombs exploded! I still don't know why they did that. I need to figure this out, obviously I am not selling bombs for a while. :(

LOL ;) aren't I naughty. Yes, it's a meatballer, the usual size - 1.5" diameter? I've never had any trouble using a meatballer, but my previous recipe (a variation of CathyMBs honey pies) was always soft-ish. This is Sheree's recipe from the Dish. Something like 1 c. baking soda, 1/2 c citric, 2/3? c epsom salts, 1/8 c cornstarch, 1/2 c SLSa, 1T FO, 1 1/4? T TRO, 1 drop undiluted LabColors orange dye. Can't remember exactly, the recipe is around here somewhere I think, or in the archives. Next time Im going to be trying PS80+oil, since I don't really like the smell of TRO (tho it feels good). It's not as smooth textured as some because I didn't grind the epsom salts first.

One rolled off the table onto a brick floor and didn't break :)

NICE set of (bubble) balls  !! I have yet to attempt again. I ordered some plastic Christmas type ornaments, where it comes apart in the middle. Someday I'll attempt again (as I couldn't get the meatballer to work). I have more of a problem with coloring it and having the scent smell nice. I did 4 different scents the last time I tried and they smelled nothing like the scent and the color was so faint they looked off-white. Feel silly asking but what is TRO?

Wahooooooo!!

I think next batch I'll play around with the PS80&oil too and see what's up with that. Thanks for the idea. Never even ocurred to me to try PS80!

Robin, what is the liquid component of the recipe? Since I've omitted water and substituted with 90 proof ETOH, I've not had any "growing" balls and they are rock hard! The rationale is that it evaporates out much quicker than water or witch hazel, leaving less time for the citric acid to react.

Give it a try if you aren't currently using it and see what you think.

Another thing I've been doing is cutting back on the amount of salts I use in the recipe. This seems to help as well. I've made bbombs without any salts at all and they are exceptionally smooth and hard but I really like the look of them with the salts, not to mention the therapeutic benefits and label appeal.

I use Sheree's recipe for bath bombs too. I've never had any problems with them growing or crumbling until I sent them to Kimberly in NY for the swap. Your balls look great. I wonder if just cutting back on the salt would help those that have problems with them exploding. I'm thinking that the salt may draw moisture. I know when we have salt for ice and snow left over in the garage, it draws a lot of moisture all around it. At the beginning of summer, I finally pitched the bag b/c I was tired of the water on the concrete around the bag. I also made 4 batches of bombs this weekend...OM&H, Pearberry, Lemongrass & Sage and Frosted Snowdrops.

That very well could be - it never really clicked in my mind that salts draw water and that might set off the citric/baking soda combo. Good point!

Sheree's recipe doesn't have any water in it at all. The only "liquid" is the TRO and the fragrance. The labcolors I use are just drops of undiluted dye - I don't think there's any water in there.

Plus, in this one I did, I only used epsom salts. Usually I use a combo of different salts - table salt, epsom, sea salts... I wonder if magnesium chloride attracts water differently than sodium chloride?
