1. Those look nice grama! I am glad you got rid of your snowflakes. I will add a bit more vybar and some stearic to my next batch. I used to use 1343 for pillars, and added stearic and vybar. Then I switched to 4625 to avoid adding additives. What's the point of 4625 if I now have to add additives???? Maybe it's just a weird or mislabeled batch. Let us know what CS says this morning. I still have the box that the 4625 came in, so maybe it can be traced back to a specific problem. I have burned a few of my newer pillars without any noticable difference in the burn (LX wicks).
2. I made a two pound batch: 32 oz 4625, 1 t UV inhibitor, 0.25 maize chip, 0.25 bright green chip, 2 ounces lemongrass FO (candlesource), first pour at 175 *F, second pour at 185 *F. Mold is 3" dia x 4.5" h, prewarmed. Completely cooled, then unmolded, and got all over mottles (left photo) Melted remaining wax, added a few grains of vybar 103, poured again with same conditions as above (candle on right). This one has a few randomly placed white spots.
3. I mean what I call a snowflake is a whitish irregularity and there will be a few of them over the surface of the pillar, whereas mottling is an all over pattern. Maybe I've got the terms mixed up?
4. I opened a new case of 4625 from CS in January. Many of the pillars I have poured from this case have snowflakes, and some have full mottling. A few grains of Vybar 103 seems to stop the mottle, but not the snowflakes. It is not every single time, which makes it frustrating. Some pillars have come out perfect. (I pour at 175 *F, warmed molds, 5.5% FO, 0.5 t/pound Peak UV inhibitor.)
5. So you were attempting to cut in half 1.5 oz FO per pound of wax and came up with 1 oz FO per 8 oz wax? Try again.
6. I just got this sample too, and I didn't catch any of the citrus notes in it, just a nice woodsy blend. I just smelled it OOB though, so I need to get it in some wax!
7. That F&M is the coolest soap I have ever seen!
8. Yeah, it looks like apple juice or pee. Too dark for wine or champagne. The candles look reeeaaally nice though! I like the blue and purple picture. The flowers are in the opposite position as the candles, that looks nice.
9. The Sweet Orange and Chili Pepper I have is from Mill Creek. I poured this last fall, and I didn't smell any chili pepper or spice at all, just a lovely sweet orange.
10. I agree with Natty, your beautiful white candles do not stand out from the white background. Also, this statement on your website, what does it mean: "Soy candles are the preferred choice for the health-minded candle lover because of the natural properties it emits into the air."
11. Damn, I actually am a chemist, and I missed my opportunity to wow you all with my chemical knowledge. Next time...
12. You need "detailed" instructions on making a candle tart?? Why don't you start by reading the specs about the wax that you have. It will tell you max fragrance load and pouring temps.
13. I do some pre-buys, but only with stuff I have already tested. There is a certain supplier who keeps aquiring new lines, and offering pre-buys. Why would I buy a pound of something I have never smelled? Even if it is a good price, I am not going to buy a pound of something based on its description only.
14. BBs lettuce is a light, watery, floral.
15. Okay, I am weird, Easter makes me think of carrots. How about carrot cake?
16. Oh yeah, I forgot Olive Blossom, a real winner!
17. Eve, you are a fragrance testing MACHINE!! You are just mowing through those samples. I need you to come over to my house and start working on my sampler stash! The Patchouli Honey is a MUST! I never thought I would like it just from the description, because I despise patch, and don't really like the scent of honey. But together in this fragrance, they are magical. Really nice scent, one of my all time favorites. Also, I recently poured a ginger lime candle, and this is a great scent too. Their Japanese tea and freesia is the closest match to Elizabeth Arden's Green Tea that I have found. Let's see, I am trying to remember, I have a ton of FO from Flickers. Oh, the Bartlett and Basil is really nice, as is the brown sugar and fig, cranberry fig, and sea island grapefruit. I am sure there are more that I like, but I am at work and don't have my notes with me.
18. Brambleberry is one of my favorites for CP FOs. Love the wasabi, vanilla sandalwood, champagne, winter grapefruit, lettuce, black tea, etc...
19. I don't think it has that artificial vanilla smell, it's just a bit too buttery/bakery for me. It's not THE one I am looking for, but it is very good. I gave away a few pillars with this scent at Christmas time, and people seemed to really like it. (I am not sure THE one for me actually exists, but I keep looking!).
20. It has performed very well for me (4625). Very strong vanilla throw, no mixing issues, no wicking issues, however, it is not THE vanilla for me. The quest goes on...
21. My records show that I first bought very vanilla and blackberry marmalade on the 21st of November 2007. I think those were the last new FOs from them. Seems like they are about due for another new one. Remember last August, they introduced 4 new FOs the same week they had the $1 sample sale. In the past they have done that sale every 6 months or so, so maybe they will have a bunch of new ones again and the sale very soon. I'll be keeping my eye on them!
22. I agree, the pumpkin vanilla, cinnamon sandalwood and pink sugar all kick butt! I would also add the Be Delicious. I have tried this from two other suppliers and the one from Candle Source smells stronger and more true to the real thing IMO, and as an extra bonus it is much cheaper. Can't beat that.
23. Saturday night there will be nothing in my pots, as I will be watching the new season premiers of Dr Who and Torchwood on BBC America! Saturday and Sunday day, I'll be pouring more of my new Peak scents: Tall grass, mango papaya, love spell, tropical tuberose, warm apple pie, white tea and ginger, macintosh, honeysuckle, ocean, etc. well, not all of them, but I'll get to try some!
24. I've been on a Peak binge recently. Just last night I was burning a ginger peach pillar, and it's really nice. Also this week I poured mandarin plum, cool citrus basil, botanical orchard, french vanilla amber, and freesia. All are superb. Another one of my favs is green tea. You just can't go wrong with Peak. I am doing the co-op too, but I just can't decide what to get! I want it all but you can only fit so much in a flat rate box. Decisions, decisions...
