When I make citrus scents, I usually will add a tiny bit of vanilla to calm that fuel/hot scent down. Not a lot, only about .15oz to a .85oz of the citrus scent and it's amazing how well that works. You can't smell the vanilla at all but it does help with that weird scent.

Thanks for that advice.  I also did notice that I think it's the wick that smells burned-very strange.  It's hard to find those CD 3's and since mine smell I tried an Eco 2 and it's perfect!  I don't normally use Ecos in my 6006 but in that little container it's great and it doesn't smell!  Gotta get creative sometimes...

This is looking AWESOME! Windows, too! Yesssss! Sure is going quickly, huh? How many square feet is it? Is it going to have separate electrical outlets, or are you going to run it through the house electric?

Thank you!  It goes quickly until they run the electrical and HVAC but that won't take crazy long.  It's almost 300 sf-lots of room for candle crafting!  It'll have its own outlets and lots of them!  French doors and windows for lots of light!

  3. After a few more sniffs of this candle, I went and smelled another container that I'm testing but with a different FO.  I actually think it's the wick that smells.  I order my wicks from Flaming Candle but they don't carry these little wicks.  I had to order these from Bittercreek.  I'm also using a CD 12 that I had ordered from Lonestar quite a while ago; both of these wicks smell burned.  I never experience that with wicks from Flaming.  Calgon take me away..............:faint:

  4. So I'm working on testing some potential new containers for the fall/holiday season.  One of them is this cute 4 oz jelly jar that would make a nice little hostess gift etc.  I absolutely loved the Blood Orange sample that CS sent with an order (I actually didn't even find the sample in my huge box of tins until a year after getting it--they threw it in with the lids.  I only use tins for samples for my stores so I don't go into that box that often).

I use 6006 and I've found that a CD 3 burns beautifully in this container and I'm almost down to the bottom of the jar.  Small wick I know, but it works

What I'm finding with this scent is that is smells, well, hot.  Not burned.  Not like chemical.  Just plain hot.  Has anyone experienced this and do you think that blending it with a hint of something else will help?

I have 3 friends testing my finished candles for me, as I am currently trying different percentages of FO.  Do you think 3 is enough or should I go with more?

As long as they test for 3 hours each burn that should be good.  Make sure they take notes and if possible, pictures after each 3 hour burn

Yes indeed!  The same candles and melts I'm already making but I won't have to put away all my stuff when I'm finished!!

  7. Here's the progress--the slab has been poured and they did a fantastic job!  They were making GREAT progress until our neighborhood informed us that they chose Friday to repave the road that goes to our house.  Ugh!  That meant an entire day of no construction.  Then they informed us yesterday afternoon that the road will be closed Monday also to finish paving so another day of no construction.  I'm SO upset but not much I can do about it.  They will start framing on Tuesday now so I'll just have to be patient.  :whistling:

  8. Quick update but an important one..........the construction crew is here for the first day of work on my candle studio!!  Too bad I can't watch the progress as I'll be at work but probably a good thing.  I'm sure the neighbors will enjoy the porta potty right on the edge of the street in front of the house.  Eh, whatta ya gonna do??!!    I'll keep you posted with the progress

I am so glad you posted this!! The Issey has been on my wish list forever, but I've been nervous about what their idea of "boyfriend in a bottle" smells like, lol! I will definitely try it for the sample sale. Thank you!

If you want to know what this FO should smell like, go to Ulta and smell the Issey Miyake men's cologne; if they truly dupe this it's a wonderful fragrance!

I would love to have some dust covers made like these of course not this design but my own.

I never make candles without a lid but I have been looking at a few style jars that don't come with lids (hate that) and I was wondering if anyone has any experience just using a dust cover.  I hate those clear plastic ones.  Lids definitely hold in the scent and I'm wondering if a dust cover like this would hold in the scent?  Also I'm worried that people when viewing a candle with a cover such as this are going to try and peel up the edge of the cover to sniff?  In that case trying to lift up the edge to smell you now encounter fingernails scraped into the top of wax and the candle starting to look shabby or the covers now becoming bent and looking ugly.   One thing for sure is you better be pretty accurate and get your wick dead center to fit into the hole!   Now I have seen a dust cover like this made and instead of a hole it was a long straight opening in case you are not dead center with your wick..... Anyone have experience and what are thoughts about this?   But I just love this look!  Am I wasting my time?

    Thanks............Trappeur

I was going to recommend Norman's Printery also-you may have seen that already as that's where the photo is from from your post.  Another cool thing about that site is that when you click on the box that says "templates" you can download a circle that shows where the center is; I print out the one that matches the size of my tumblers and I can see the center dot through the bottom so my wicks are centered every time.

On another note, regarding the fingernails in the wax etc....when I went into check on my candle inventory in my customer's store, someone had put one of the candles up to her face to smell it and got her lipstick (lip gloss probably!) all over the side of it.  Ugh.  How many times have  you seen people smell candles and they actually put the tip of their nose right on the wax???  Yikes.

This is from Norman's Printery site--cool dust cover for double wicked.

Wow, I LOVE the name and the description is a beautiful play on words!  Would you believe I haven't seen a shop in town that carries Yankee in my neck of the woods.

Lightmyfire....you could make it yourself!  You better start now...Christmas is only 5 months away....ha ha ha

Isn't that disgusting...I'm still on spring and summer and now thinking about Christmas.

Actually I just delivered some candles to a shop and she asked me to start making fall candles and thinking about Christmas.....well, ok...sure...

    Trappeur

Well this is a cheap Walmart brand--this candle is only $7.  Can you even imagine what kind of junk is in this candle? *shudder*  BUT it does smell divine.

I'm anxious to identify a FO that smells like this so I can get these made!  You know Christmas will be upon us before you know it--I can't wait!  That's my very favorite time of year.

  12. On one of my many strolls through Walmart,  I happened upon the candle/melt aisle.  I always like to smell the interesting sounding scents so that I can make note of it and match it when I make my candles/melts.  I came across a Better Homes and Gardens 18 oz jar candle called "A Wonderful Winter"; it was spectacular.  Not in how it looked of course, but the scent is incredible.  Here is the description:

"Icy peppermint shimmers breeze through regal evergreen adorned with glimmering icicles, bright winter citrus and leafy mistletoe"

If anyone happens to experience this candle will you let me know if you can match that scent or if just by reading this description this sounds like a FO you've used, please let me know.  It is soooooo

    good!

What other unit of measure would give the consumer the information needed to decide if the item were as described?

By “the candle” could be a jar with 1 oz of wax or 100.

we buy our wax by the lb.

fragrances from the lab are by the lb, (later rebottled by retailers as fluid ounces with specific gravity info provided to calculate actual costs, etc. )

    cereal is by the oz.

    meat by the lb.

lip balm is by the oz/gram

    Indeed

Heres a handy guide that will answer many many of the questions and comments above:

    https://www.nist.gov/sites/default/files/documents/2017/04/28/1020-1-labeling-guides-weight.pdf

pages 10-11 spell out the solutions to the challenges named above, namely approximate and the location of each piece of info (front panel, etc.)

Marie Gale is very helpful for soap and cosmetic labeling - which is very similar to candle labeling

    https://www.mariegale.com/quick-labeling-faq/

so after reading the info on the gov link, my question is regarding the opening line in that document:

"This guide is intended to provide manufacturers, packers, distributors, and retailers of packaged products with information about the labeling requirements for commodities that are sold by weight in the consumer marketplace".

Why does a candle or melt have to show the weight?   They aren't technically sold by weight, are they?  It seems that they price is for the finished product regardless of the weight.  Just wondering...............I'm sure someone has this answer all ready to go!

Now what I would do is put your caution label on the backside of the main label so when they open up the melt there is the caution label hitting them right in their face.  You could also if you wanted put the net weight on the caution label too so it would free up space on the front main label for your little saying.   That's what I'd do

Thanks for all of your input, as always!!  This is why I ask for opinions on this forum.  I already put a warning label on the inside of the melt, on the back side of the label.  Currently I'm ordering my melt warning labels from CS because they come on a roll (very handy) and for $3.66/100 I think the price is pretty reasonable for a nice warning label.  I like your idea of adding the net wt to that label so I'd need to print my own.  Do you print your own to include this or are you having them printed?

You could also eliminate the top tag, create the same size sticker and place it on the back.

I think I understand now that I reread your message.  Just type the same message that's on the little tag and print on a little sticker on that back, correct?  I'll search around for some little stickers. That's worth trying!!  I actually just was doing the ribbon then I added the little tag so the ribbon was just there already looking cute.
