broadzilla
Ok, really stupid question here...where is the borax mentioned in this recipe? Is it the citric acid? I want to try making these, first timer here, and can't figure out which ingredient is the Borax.
jldorrington
the borax was removed from the recipe midway through this thread due to studies showing that borax is not safe for B&B products... i think that is either on pg 1 or
mbrown
There is no borax in the recipe. You don't put borax in bath bombs......at least I have never seen a recipe for bombs that call for borax

blazerina
I probably shouldn't post this with out a back up link or something, but I have visited many sites that sell Cosmetic Borax. I don't know if this is any different or if this is still an issue even in the Cosmetic Borax. But I just thought i'd post this reminder that there is such a thing and of course it's not what you get off your grocers shelf. But I just didn't want anyone to freak out if they did get some from a supplier and and used it.
Robin29
I just tried these and they are great! They molded with ease and actually stuck together! I am just waiting for them to harden a bit before I take a nice soak.
CareBear
I'm making them this weekend - waaaaaay overdue for getting some foot products done, and I think these, in miniature, would be perfect for a foot soak!

peppermint
I have tried one other recipe and had a huge mess! Monster size bath bombs:embarasse I would love to try this one but where do I get the Safflower oil?ThanksSuzanne
Chauna1
You can get the safflower oil at a health food store.HTHChauna
peppermint
Extreme Newbie here! We don't have Health food stores here unless you mean vitamin or all natural?? We do have lots of coffee shacks though! LOL We also have an upscale market/grocery I think I will go ask them but what is the saflower oil originally for? What section would I look for it? I really appreciate the help.Suzanne
Chauna1
Probably where they keep their oils or in the health food section. I really don't know. You don't have any health food stores around? That is suprising. Let me know if you find it. I think you may be able to substitute that oil with olive oil. Don't quote me on that. From what I have read you can substitute it.ChaunaMaybe one of the experts will chime in and offer some help.

That is suprising. Let me know if you find it. I think you may be able to substitute that oil with olive oil. Don't quote me on that. I live 90 miles away from the nearest health food store. If there is one closer to me, I don't know about it. And 6 years ago, when I lived in a much smaller state, it was 260 miles, one way, to the nearest health food store. I literally can't even buy socks in this town, let alone safflower oil. *lol*Anyways, I am blaming this site for my new online ordering frenzy. I seriously need to stop looking at the recipes and the beautiful pictures thinking that I too can make these items.:undecided Next week or so I'll be receiving stuff I've been ordering...and then what??!! I'm already getting nervous thinking about making stuff!:embarasse I know I want to try to make these bath bombs and many other recipes I've been writing down. Ok, I'm rambling, I'll stop now. Anyways, thank you for the recipe.
blazerina
<~~~~Not an expert but i'm chiming in anyway! I just substituted the Safflower oil for what I had which was Apricot Palm Kernal oil. I think the only reason that Safflower is specified is because it is a light oil. Check out those vitamin stores! They either have it also or they will be able to tell you EXACTLY where to go. Specialty oils are usually on the very top shelf in a grocery store if they have them and often are packaged differently and won't look like the other oils. (there is peanut oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil and maybe a few others depending on the variety they offer) They are also sometimes in smaller bottles. You might find them with the pan sprays and such. I bet you will find it at the upscale store though. But don't let not finding the perfect oil stop you from playing and learning. A lot of it preference for as little as what is used. You just dont' want something heavy and syrupy that will make the tub nasty afterwards. At least, that's my non expert take. broadzilla
I'll go check out the one grocery store we have, the one with 8 whole aisles. :rolleyes2 *lol* But on my days off starting tomorrow, I'll be driving into a real city to shop for groceries anyways, so I'll get it there. Small town living, gotta love it. I'll add "light" oil to my list though. I'll probably get a few different kinds to try these out with, all the ones mentioned here. *lol*Do you experts out there...that includes YOU Blazerina, remember how excited you were when you ordered your very first supplies and were waiting excitedly for them to get to you? That's me right now. I'm terrified now of even attempting soaps or candles, so I'm starting with milk baths, bath bombs, lip gloss, stuff like that. AHHHHHHHH!!!!!! I can hardly stand the wait!!! *lol*
blazerina
Yeah- I remeber the excitement of getting my first stuff from the classies, lol.. still haven't put in 'an order' with an on line company. I hate shipping as well as spending large amounts at once, so i'm avoiding it. Although, I did once add to someone elses order and they sent it to me, that was really exciting! It was a seletion of bottles and containers for Christmas gifts of bath salts, lip balms, & roll on perfumes. That was too fun! But mostly - for a long time I was afraid to really start. I collected a drawer full of 1-4 oz samples before I even did much of anything with them.:rolleyes2 :embarasse I think i'm one of those people who is creative enough to know what CAN be done, but at the same time that overwhelms me and I just don't know which way to go or where to start! (now that i've spent about $400 in total since August- and this is just a hobby)
elegantnaturals
Hi! I'm on a bathbomb kick today, trying out new scents and recipes. Since my son didn't want a peppermint bathbomb, I made strawberry scented ones instead. I used your recipe and subbed a bit.Dry Phase2 cups baking soda1 cup citric acid1 cup cornstarchWet Phase1/3 cup Grapeseed Oil1-1/4 T. Strawberry F/O from Brambleberry2 T. Aloe GelOnly problem is that the strawberry fo is giving me a headache and making me naseous. I'm thinking that a tablespoon and a bit is too much! My kids love it though. You can view the bathbombs on my Flickr page at http://flickr.com/photos/7284078@N04/495119586/
Denise2456
Elegant Naturals your bath bombs look FANSTATIC. I know the kids are loving those. Thanks for sharing.
elegantnaturals
Thanks, Denise! They kept sticking to the mould until I figured out that if I got the edges of the ornament close enough together, I got a better "pack" and they'd release. AnjieBurdett
Hi there. Can you tell me if cornstarch is the same as cornflour?? I am in the UK and may have different terminology . Also can you give me an idea of how many 50mm or 60mm bath bombs this recipe will make? Do you have to get this in the mould really quick LOL.If I wanted to sub the safflower oil for evening primrose oil, is that ok? And if I added some grated coco butter would I have to leave out anything else??Thanks for your help complete noobie!Anjie,x.edited to add: forget the first question, I googled it :-) It is the same thing. AnjieBurdett
OK, this was my recipe....16oz (1Ib) bicarb8oz citric acid8oz cornflour1.5oz grate coco butter (some finely grated some roughly chopped)4fl.oz evening primrose oil1tbsp vanilla f/o concentrate2 tbsp waterI mixed it all up as you said, going easy on the liquid and mixing fast with a balloon whisk. Then I got to it with packing it into the moulds. Everything was going fine at first and I made 2 big heart shaped bombs, 4 60mm ball shaped bombs and 1 50mm ball bomb...then it all went wrong and the 2 halves of every bomb I made after that wouldn't stick together!!! No matter what I did they came away in 2 halves! So in total I ended up with 2 x heart bombs, 4 x 60mm bombs, 1 x 50mm bomb and 6 x half 60mm bombs LOL.Why did this happen? Does anyone know how I can stop this happening next time I make me some bombs?
ladysj
It sounds like you possibly weren't working fast enough and your mix was getting to dry. Try spritzing it with a little witch hazel in a fine mist spray bottle.

Also, I would melt the cocoa butter and add it to your oil instead of grating it. You can use any type or combination of oils you'd like. However, I've never used safflower oil (except for cooking) so wouldn't know if you could sub it or not. Maybe use something like grapeseed oil or hazelnut oil instead. Both are, here at least, available in the grocery market.I managed to make about 6 of the 50 mm bombs but I didn't leave a big gap between the edges. And no matter what recipe you use, you have to move fast otherwise the mixture dries out. If that happens, add a bit more oil until its back to where you want it.HTHApril
