Product development service

Recommended Posts

Is there such a thing as a company you can work with to help develop/troubleshoot a candle product? If there is, I'm sure it is pricey but for now I just want to know if it is even a thing.  I'm getting frustrated with the inconsistent performance of my candles. I've tested, retested, taken notes, tweaked things and am about at the point of calling uncle. But before I do that, I am wondering if there is an expert consultant I can partner with to help me solve issues specific to my situation.

Thanks

There are many different types of candle related consulting & manufacturing services.

Wax development & selection service by wax blenders or manufacturers

FO development & selection service by perfumer, frangrance house, FO blender or manufacturers

Wicking service by wick assembler or manufacturers

Candle testing labs for safety, performance & ingredients tests

Private-label manufacturers

Technical candle consultants

Automation specialists.

Packaging & shipping box specialists

Label specialists

and the list goes on....

Only place that can be considered complete package would be big private-label candle manufacturers.  Big companies should be able to handle almost all of A to Z of candle related aspects.  There are many mom & pop private-label candle makers, but they aren't even close to being a solution.

This is just one example of private-label candle manufacturer:      https://www.alene.com/

It seems like what you are asking for is "Technical candle consultants".  These people are very hard to locate, and even if you did they would be only willing to work with big companies or someone with big investment capital.  Only one I can think of is "Jim Becker" of Candle Solution.  He was(might be still is) chairman of ASTM's F15.45 Candle Products Subcommitte and has candle consulting business.  He does not have website.  He can be only contacted thru Linked-in.

Hi @Peggy T. Yes there is. Here's 2 that I came across and I'm sure there are more. Good luck. 👍

I do two similar things for production partners, and have been considering offering the service for CraftServer members.

Facet 1) testing their set up. Their containers, wicks, FO, wax.
partner sends me a minimum of three completed candles. I test one “by the book”, one without trimming and roughly timing, and one with power burns to simulate normal conditions. I provide reports of each to the partner, then any recommendations.
often they send an additional candle or two so that I can test other wicks if theirs fails at any point in the process.

Facet 2) designing a candle using their ranges of wax, container and fragrance.

partner sends me their FO and several containers (If they are unusual) along with a list of acceptable waxes to use. I make testers from the top wax choice and blend, tweak, replace wicks, etc until an optimal combo is “sellable”. It is extremely helpful to have selections of their exact wax lots since all of them vary from case to case to some degree.

in both cases the partner must be completely clear with their objectives.

you may want to ask @strugglebrother about the testing services at places he tried.

Thank you everyone! These seem like some potentially great resources and I will definitely reach out to them. @TallTayl if you decide to offer this service, please let me know as I'd be very interested. 🙂

I noticed that you haven't talk to any of forum members about your problem.  CraftServer is another good source of trouble shooting.  Would you like to talk about it first with us?  There could be many in here that might can help. 😉

Thanks.  I actually did ask on this forum when I started having problems with it two years ago.

That question was for @Peggy T.  Sorry!  You might have gotten confused because I put them together too closely.

As for your Apple and Pumpkin Strudel, I don't see anything unusual yet.  I will try to look for more information.

I have asked about it here before too. The challenges I have are more complicated than a particular FO but are (I think) related to my candle vessel which is ceramic as well as my wax (a blend of soy and coconut). These two factors make it really hard to wick my candles satisfactorily. I don't post very often but I use crasftserver for research as well, generally reading other posts on ceramic containers or coconut wax etc. Thanks!
