Any scents/FO's you have almost given up trying to find?

Recommended Posts

Anyone like me?

This is not yet another of my "Hey! Can you recommend a good (insert scent here)..." threads.

This is a "here is the list of stuff I have tried from supplier to supplier and I STILL have not found the FO/scent I am after" thread.

Either I do not know what these scents are supposed to smell like, have not yet found the one or I cannot find one that smells like a melt I tried, and loved, from a manufacturer/supplier before I started making my own.

FO's I am okay giving up (for now-not forever) finding (so that I do not spend more money making myself crazier than I already am):

  • Sweet Potato Pie
  • Carrot Cake
  • Blackberry

Again, not looking for suggestions back on my particular scents (I have likely tried them-maybe more than once!) but wondered if it would be cathartic somehow to list those you are still seeking.

...or is it just me????

My absolute favorite scent of all time was from Carmen's Candlery in OK. It is Almond Blossom and I cannot find anything that compares to it. I went the their outlet store and bought every candle they had in that scent when they went out of business. I have tried so many almonds, cherry almonds and others almond blossom and none smell like it. Just plain almond is close but I wish I could figure out what the blossom part is!! I have one candle left and I refuse to burn it. I just get it out and smell it every so often. LOL. :)

Other than that, it's blackberry I can't find. Blissful Blackberry from AH/RE is the best so far.

I have not found a cinnamon bun or creme brulee that I like- it may just be me and my nose, but I just don't care for the ones that I have tried. Also, a good Almond- AH's Almond Creme is the best I have found so far. Honey has been a tough one - many seem too perfumey to me, I do like the L'Occitane Honey and Shea from Elements and WSP though. I may just be picky when it comes to scents- as so many others love the ones that I don't care for.... everyone's nose and preferences are different....

Peaks "Wild Mountain Honey" ended a decade-long search for a true/strong honey fragrance that I remember from working with my beekeeper dad while servicing his hives and extracting the golden nectar. A little of "WMH" goes a long way especially in B&B.

I am incredibly picky so you are not alone. Since I make mainly for myself, I am buying based not just on what is strong and lasts but also what I like. That narrows me considerably.

Mine is Sugar cookie - I've yet to try one that is not only knock your socks off when poured - but still a month later.

oops. Another that should have been on my list.

For me it would have to be:

Rum

Ocean (realistic)

Pumpkin (no spice)

Oak

Can't find em!? :sad2:

I was told by a very well known fragrance supplier that a plain pumpkin without any spice would really not have much of a scent to it without a spice note. Hmmmmm! (?)

The best Clean Sheet I have found so far is Clean Sheets from Elements- extremely strong in my soy tarts- (I almost had to turn it off and it lasted several days!) It's been the nicest laundry scent I've found so far....

Many, many years ago. Long before I even thought about making my own scented candles, I made an online order for floating candles from zestcandle.com. I was searching through their limited scented pillar candles when I happened upon a Sandalwood scented pillar for $4. Why not?

At the time I had never smelled sandalwood. I had been reading about it as an essential oil in my soap books, but when I saw the price of a half ounce of EO I realized that I may NEVER smell sandalwood. So a $4 pillar and a chance to smell sandalwood, why not?

I fell in love with this candle, it was deep, exotic, earthy, and very sexy. It became my favorite candle to burn in the bedroom if you know what I mean.

So, the candle was burned half way, and it was a favorite of my husband as well and I went back to zest candle to order more. They didn't carry them anymore. Nothing listed as "sandalwood". AAAAArrrrrrgggghhhhhhh!

I began searching for sandalwood candles, and I started haunting scented candles in every store I could find them in. Nothing listed as "sandalwood" smelled even remotely like that candle. Come ON, it was a cheap $4 candle, but I couldn't find anything like it.

Well, I found this forum searching for candles online, and I had that little spark of........if I can't buy it, maybe I can make it myself.......and the journey began.

So, years later, about 15-20 different sandalwood scents later, nothing, nadda, nope. I have never smelled anything that comes close. I stopped burning the pillar and have about 2 inches of it left. It is still deeply fragrant, and I keep it wrapped in paper to preserve the scent. I'm hoping to take it to a fragrance specialist and maybe having it duped.

I have come close just a couple of weeks ago when I received an order of fragrances from Rustic Escentuals. Their Hawaiian Sandalwood is close, like it may be a part of this scent, but it is only a small part of this complex fragrance.

So, a $4 cheapo pillar bought on a whim changes my entire life....................

It's not just you Karen,

Sweet potato pie and carrot cake are two that I have had trouble finding also. I bought a large bottle of each from NG and although they don't smell horrible, they aren't what I expected. I ordered a bottle of their sweet potatoes and brown sugar and it smells much nicer! I don't know why it couldn't be used for a sweet potato pie scent. I haven't put it in wax yet but OOB it smells wonderful.

Sugar Cookie--I've tried everything recommended for years but just don't get jazzed about any of them.

Ocean--I give up. I live on the ocean. I've tried Peak's and TSW and just get NOTHING--from wax or cp.

I tend to agree about the pumpkin comment--I "like" what I smell when I cut into a pumpkin, but I'm not in love with it. I like the spicy or bake scent.

Right now I'm having a difficult time finding a Cucumber Melon that sticks--and I always used AH with no problem. Now it's just not cutting it for me in cp.

Those of you who are looking for a scent from 5 yrs ago or more you can probably forget it. FOs have since been reformulated and many may be discontinued for a variety of reasons; didn't sell, too pricey, an ingredient no longer exists, farming methods have changed, or manufacturer went out of business. Also, today's formulations tend to be complex with more notes. You're not looking for a needle in a haystack, you are looking for the fabled unicorn.

Hello Everyone! Sometimes you need to think outside the box - in this case look at less obvious suppliers. Here is one supplier that seems to have everything and may have what you are looking for. It is SaveOnScents.com and the link is here: http://www.saveonscents.com/ . I hope this company has what all of you are looking for - maybe not the exact name but same or similar fragrance.

This is somewhat true. But, even a mellow scent has it's place in perfumery/candlemaking. I find it odd that it's difficult to find. A true pumpkin (the gourd) has a great smell! But, finding an FO that's reminescent -- is a challenge. MOST Pumpkin FOs ARE a varying combination of Nutmeg and Vanilla with other suporting notes used to playdown the Pumpkin and playup the "Pie" or "Spice" etc.

I managed to create a pretty realistic "Pumpkin" scent using the following FOs: Tonka Bean, Nutmeg, Basil Sweet, Fig, Galbanum. but I can't find a manufacturer that will dupe it without paying an arm and/or leg and I can not keep making it as it cost too much for the individual FOs. Back to topic, I did see that both CandleChem and Chemessence offers a straight pumpkin FO. I have yet to try either. So here's hoping. I still need to see about having my blend duped.

Now to find a true ocean scent!!! and a Rum liquer scent.

One of the better Sugar Cookie scents I've tried recently was from Walmart believe it or not! It was a simmer oil but it smelled REALLY goood.

For me it was GL's (Mountain Sage). I loved that scent. I never got a notice that they were closing down or else I would of ordered a lot more. Just by Nature never did carry it either. Another good one for me was (Passion Fruit) from Aroma Creations out of Washington State that closed down last year!!

I'm looking for Candle Shop.Have for days.Doesn't seem to be one that is sold alot9not on sites I find). It's for a customer.Had the scent years ago but can't find it now.

With our years of candlemaking I've liked all the scents but Leather and Clove. They make me sick. I wouldn't even try another companies.I stay completely away from these 2. There's a few more but would have to go through my scents and that would take awhile.

I would love to find Pure Integrity's Pumpkin Pie. It is a non-spicy pumpkin pie with a lot of pie crust and it is very buttery. But come to think of it, it probably doesnt really smell like pumpkin pie in the traditional sense (no cinnamon, cloves, pumpkin pie spice, etc), but I love the scent. I have found FO's that are close but it is still missing something. So until I can get closer, I have a few of their candles locked away for times of desperation.
