  1. Yeah, I'd say millersoap, too. If it is books you want, though, what I did was just go to the library and comb through as many as I possibly could (free). I also went to Barnes and Noble, got a coffee and parked my butt in the craft section pouring over books there, too. Didn't buy any, though, but got bits and pieces of info.
  2. That is so awesome. Now we need to get him making some candles too. I'm sure there's some ladies here up for the task .
  3. Ahh. Age-old question. Somewhat situational, however I always give out the basic resources: library, internet. Experimenting is the biggest thing when it comes to candle-making. A person needs to test things out for themselves, find their own suppliers, explore their market. Successful chandlers hesitate to "give answers" because generally people work years and years to become successful at something like this. Why on earth would they work that hard only to turn around and give out their secrets? -- Especially to potential competition? Don't be offended at their lack of helpfulness. The best way you're going to learn is by doing it yourself anyway. Unless you just want a business that sells candles and don't want to make them -- then you still have to research as to whom you will wholesale from and how you will market/sell.
  4. Round for wickless here. However, never hurts to check out the squared ones (test them, see if they fit, how they perform, etc.) and be different
  5. Got my heat gun from Wal-Mart, too. Gosh, it makes candle-making SO much easier. Yes, mold cleaning, heating, warming, clean up, when I used wax chips I'd put it in a spoon and melt it with the heat gun. Cleaning votive molds is a breeze with the gun, paper towel and some gloves (they get HOT).
  6. Again, class looked GREAT. Thanks so much Scented. You ROCKED.
  7. Thanks sharyl55 for the time breakdowns. Yes, you just go directly to the class "room" -- here's the link
  8. I swear I remember someone soaping Mountain Dew a few years back. I don't remember what the results were though.
  9. Scented-Scented-Scented (chanting). Whoo-hoo, she's settin' the bar here for us. You ready, teach'?
  10. Maybe it seems silly, but it seems to me the people to watch would be the "little guys." Many a time I've seen someone come up with something and the larger retailers follow.
  11. What a cute hat -- and baby!!! I shouldn't have peeked!! It is getting to be the season for cuddling up with some yarn, that's for sure.
  12. Oh good -- glad you got it figured out Georgia.
  13. Georgia, they do have a cart option, but it is probably more involved than you're looking for... have you checked out Mal's or the paypal checkout? Maybe that would suit your needs better.
  14. Honestly, it seems to me that the market is getting more and more saturated, which makes it a little more difficult. However the tips above are great. Continuing to plug away is hard when you're feeling frustrated with sales. But the busy season is coming -- hopefully things will pick up.
  15. Glad all is worked out, too. However, in answer to this question: That is correct. Soliciting members on forum or through the PM system is NOT allowed.
  16. Have you googled it? Probably some of the crunchy-granola sites have people doing this, but maybe not? I've never made liquid so I have no clue. If you do already make liquid, I'd try it on some of your dishes (ones ya don't care much for, of coarse) and see how it pans out. Tweak as necessary. Ya never know, you might be onto the next new thing
  17. Dayyyyng -- I've never had that happen, doubling while it is sitting in the cart. Ouch. There definitely is a certain amount of hooplah over WSP and the shipping prices. It sporadically pops up. It seems the underlying question is do they make a profit on inflated prices, not charging real shipping. Has anyone ever found this out, though?
  18. I never could get those puppies right. Hopefully those dimensions will work for you. That can be so frustrating, I know.
  19. Momma like the header part (although it looks a tad off-center to me -- can it shuffle R?, the SageBJ part -- is it just me?). I really like the look of it. Very clean, relaxing... very unlike my house right now...
  20. Definitely test. Check the FO section here on the forum for favorites, that's a good place to start. Your best bet is to get your supplies from a reputable supplier. Tarts generally give a good scent throw and are easier to formulate (you don't have all those wonderful wicking issues to deal with). Figuring out what sells and what doesn't (in your market) is the harder part. Sometimes even IF something throws like crazy and you love it -- customers don't. Just how it is.
  21. Haha. Sounds good. You are some busy people!!
  22. That's so awesome. I'd really(really) love to be able to make socks. I'm sock-impaired, though. I've tried so many times and just can't do it, darnit.
  23. Awesome work -- crafty and inexpensive, woohoo!!
