  1. Most of the scents are very high quality from there. I'm so lucky, they're local to me!
  2. As long as you have a decent lavender FO, it's usually one of the stronger ones.
  3. My basic rule of thumb for testing things in new wax is that I use the same wick I would use in my normal wax with the particular scent that I'm using. So if it was me, I'd do exactly what you're asking if you should do. If it's not right, you can always try a smaller wick.
  4. What a doll! Make him something special for dinner or dessert!!
  5. Typically, soy will burn down first and THEN start to burn sideways if that makes any sense. Sometimes you can't tell what it's really going to do until you've burned the candle almost half way. So far it looks good to me.
  6. Oh man, that really really sucks. I'm SO sorry that happened to you.l
  7. What did you actually end up wicking it with? Sounds like your wicks are a little bit too big if your candle is having a wax blow out!
  8. I'm so glad nothing bad happened!! And I'll just bet that Top is gonna love this one!
  9. Giant sized cotter pins work really really well too!
  10. I work in the factory of a midsized candle manufacturer, and one day we got a call from a very nice man who said that one of our container candles had shattered while being burnt. The guy that handles such things was asking him a couple questions over the phone and when he asked if they'd been trimming the wick regularly while burning there was sort of an embarassed silence... the man told our guy that um... well... just perhaps the wick had gotten too long because they were in bed at the time and some of the wax had been poured out of the container and this wasn't the first time it had happened to them, and no not just with our candles. Our guy told me this (and yes, he's rather naive) and I burst out laughing. I ended up having to explain that there are people in the world that enjoy dripping wax onto each other's bodies as a turn on. Boy was his face red, and I think mine must've been also just from realizing how much I had shocked the poor guy. We did send the nice man a free candle, and our guy gave him a nice lecture about how maybe they should consider keeping something to trim down the wick by the bed.
  11. The colors that first come to mind for me would be pink, red or a nice deep purple.
  12. heh... you should see some of the ones I picked up when I bought out a bunch of molds from a small candlemaker going out of business! Trust me, they were even worse then these are. I didn't know they were there even, it was just a couple of BIG boxes of loose molds for $10 each, lots of good metal molds though!
  13. "You hug square pillars too????? Oh... I tried and it wouldn't give. Ok... something else learned!!! Thank you!!" Sorry for the weird quote, but I couldn't get the other way to work right... soy doesn't hug like paraffin does. It's more brittle and tends to break if you try and hug it... learned this one the hard way several times!
  14. I've gotten a pretty decent flesh color using a little bit of brown and a little bit more yellow. Doesn't sound like it, I know, but the little bit of brown makes a pinkish color and the yellow cuts the pinkness a little bit.
  15. I've done it before, they usually don't look too pretty because the wax is too hard to stick to the sides, and sometimes will even fall right out of the glass! That being said, yes you can do it, especially if they're for your own use. Just know that you will need to use a larger size wick to get them to burn nicely than you would need with softer container wax.
  16. I've used one of those before, wicked it with mostly 5/0 square braid, but in a couple cases had to go up to 1/0 square braid. I couldn't get it to burn nicely with any of the flat braid I tried. This mold worked best for me with a slight lower melt point pillar wax than what I usually used, but I don't have notes here so can't remember exactly what it was.
  17. With a blend you usually don't have to cure it quite as long, but yes, you still do need to let it cure for a couple days unless you're only using maybe 25% soy and the rest paraffin. This is just my experience, others may have other ideas!
  18. You might also want to try some paper cored wicks. Those burn fairly hot, and sometimes you can get away with using a smaller wick.
  19. I use a little metal cream pitcher that I got used at a restaurant supply place to do tea lights and votives with. Pour from the big pouring pitcher into the little one and away you go. It was pretty easy getting the little lid off the cream pitcher to use for this
  20. Just in case you guys didn't know, there is a 100% veggie stearic, so no, the candle wouldn't be 100% soy, but it would be 100% veggie!
  21. What book are you reading with all this headachey but cool stuff in it?
