  1. I think a bow - but you definitely can try both. @moonshine love the charm idea. How cute!
  2. I vote no bow. I think the reason is because it looks too shiny and new; the jar seems to lend itself to the rustic look. If you do want a small bow, like moonshine said, jute or twine would look nice. It would blend better and give more focus to the jar. Edit: I still love those jars. Just looking at the pictures makes me want to pick one up and smell it.
  3. Holy cow @TallTayl I can't believe ECOs burn so hot. This will be an interesting series of tests. Thanks for all your advice!
  4. @moonshine The CSN wicks worked okay for me, although in certain FOs they were tough to wick - one size would be too large, but the next size down would be too small. It's also a visual thing; I like the way ECOs look (more natural/rustic with the brown striping), rather than the perfect white CSN wicks. Those are lavender buds; I sprinkled them on the top as the wax cooled. I will have to pay attention to them as the burn goes on, thanks for the tip. Edit: I should add that I don't like the fact I can only get CSN wicks at Candle Science :/ It's nice to have a few other options.
  5. The vanilla bourbon from CandleSoylutions is more bourbon whiskey with hints of vanilla bean. Perhaps why it's called "vanilla bourbon" rather than "bourbon vanilla" like the one from WSP.
  6. Thanks @TallTayl. I thought so - might try the next size down. Fingers crossed. Appreciate that insight. I'll definitely take it into account!
  7. Not to throw another supplier in to the mix (although I guess that's exactly what I'm doing!), the vanilla bourbon from CandleSoylutions is pretty good and throws well in soy wax. I am also curious to hear about crackling firewood - a nice campfire is one of my absolute favorite scents.
  8. Howdy everybody, I'm testing new wicks - usually use CSN, but trying ECO now. First test batch is with CS Lavender (6% FO load), GB 444 wax, 4 oz. quilted jelly jars . My question is: do you think this candle is over-wicked? This one is an ECO 8 (trimmed to precisely 1/4") and is three hours into its first test burn. To me, it almost seems like it could be a bit large.... but the flame is pretty steady with good hot throw. Curious to see what you more seasoned chandlers think.
  9. I like the idea - but like TallTayl, it is difficult to make out the name.
  10. I LOVE those little round jars with the floral design. Resisting the urge to get some myself! As for hang tags, I tend to lean towards rustic things myself... twine, raffia, etc. But a bit of thin ribbon would be pretty, too, and sophisticated.
  11. Thanks @Candybee @Moonstar The Iced Tea Twist certainly is pricey, but like the labels, it's worth it to me. I make less of a profit using the more expensive oils, but it's a profit nonetheless. I have also tried Gardenia from WSP and it is the best one I have found. My mother asked me to make a gardenia candle for her (she is picky) and she loves it. The lavender sage sounds awesome; haven't tried it though, as I use the CS lavender. I appreciate all the supportive comments! Thank you very much!
  12. Thank you! The labels are printed out using my inkjet printer; the scent names are printed using a handwritten font I found online.
  13. I wouldn't be scared of double boiling - As long as you keep tabs on your wax temperature and aren't slinging water everywhere, you'll be fine. I've been using a double boiler the past couple of years with no trouble. And I purchased my presto pot already modified here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/AmericanChandler There may or may not be better deals other places online, but I'm happy with my purchase.
  14. I just started using a modified presto pot with the spout built in. I find that it makes life so much easier than doing my candle making over the kitchen stove (my husband appreciates this as well, as now my candle supplies never leave my craft room). I just heat my wax in the pot, pour using the spigot into a pyrex measuring cup, and add the FO to the measuring cup, so my presto pot only ever sees unscented wax. Super easy and the spigot hasn't clogged yet. Thumbs up. The only real difficulties for me are: 1) With small batches (don't need to heat an entire pot of wax for just a couple of candles) and 2) Pouring the hot wax into the measuring cup, then weighing it, then adding FO before it cools too quickly. Before, I weighed my wax prior to melting; once it was hot, all I did was add my fragrance and stir. No worries about cooling before I could get the FO in. This will probably just take some getting used to, though.
  15. The labels look great! Good idea on gluing the bows; people can be so good at making things messy. I think you have a new kitty, lol. What a sleepy opossum!
  16. Thank you all! Moonstar, the FO is Iced Tea Twist from WSP; I just renamed it. I absolutely love the fragrance. I use GB 444 wax and currently CSN wicks, although I am testing ECO wicks and if they work out well would like to switch over to those. I have some CD wick to test as well. The CSNs are working just fine, but I like the look of the ECOs and CDs and they seem to mushroom a bit less.
  17. Clear Black - I found the canvas at Hobby Lobby, although it is also available on Amazon and a few other other places online. Five sheets for $10, and I can get 12 labels on each sheet, so there's 60 labels at about $0.17 each. May be a bit more than other labels, but worth it to get the look I wanted. Kandlekrazy - Thank you!
  18. Jbradshaw, I quite like the look of your label. Texture is awesome. Overall, it looks very simple and classy.
  19. Hello everyone, Lately I have been working on creating new labels for my little 4 oz. quilted jelly jar candles, and thought I would share some of my product photos. The whole process has been a lot of fun and I am quite happy with the way they have turned out. The labels are printed on an adhesive-backed canvas.
  20. Mildly related (and very late to the conversation, sorry), but the burnt smell happened to me as well, when I was testing with ECO wicks, in CS's Pumpkin Souffle. So I do believe wthomas57 may be right!
  21. Jul - The Fillmore patch came out pretty weak for me... not sure what happened, but as good as it smelled from the bottle, it wasn't so great in my candles. nursenancy - How did your WSP patch candles come out???
  22. Hi everyone, I am sorry for not having posted in a long time. It's been quite busy and we've just moved from Cali to Arizona; I am just now setting up all of my candle making supplies once again. As for the teacup candles, I had success with double wicking the CSN 7s, and CSN 9s for some fragrances. However, I just ordered some ECO wicks to play around with - I'll probably start trying those out in jelly jars before the teacups. I originally started with ECOs, but the first fragrance I tried with them smelled burned, so I moved on to CSNs. But it could have been the fragrance... so now I'll experiment and find out! I really like the way they look, and they didn't seem to mushroom quite like the CSNs do.
  23. Love love love those candles. The designs on the glass are so cute. I had no idea this thread existed but have loved reading about everyone What's your name? Erica How old are you? 25 Where do you live? Southern California between LA and Las Vegas, in the middle of the Mojave Desert. How long have you been making candles/soap/whatever? Been making candles for about 10 months now and not getting tired of it any time soon! How did you get started making candles/soap/whatever? My husband got stationed here with the Army about 2.5 years ago and since we're so far away from civilization, I needed some hobbies. I started painting reclaimed wood signs and selling them on post, and being crafty I wanted to make more than just wood artwork. I love having candles in the house and thought I'd try my hand at it one day... and here we are! Are you married? Any kids? Married yes, kids no. If candle/Soap making isn't your primary job, what do you do? Before moving to SoCal I worked as a archaeological field technician in North Dakota; I was lucky once I moved here to find a job in the same field, but it's only part-time since I'm so far away from everything. Kind of an on-call position. Anything else we should know? Hmmm, I have two 80 lb goldendoodles who help me craft all day. Which by that I mean put their noses in everything and ask to be let in and out of the house all day... needless to say I don't get as much done as I hope to. When my husband and I aren't working or crafting (he does some woodworking), we take the pups on day hikes and camping trips, and it's really a lot of fun . Love to be outdoors.
  24. The jars are straight sided. Thanks for the suggestions; I tried ECOs before this and wasn't happy with them, so when I tried CSNs and they were better, I decided to stick with them and figure it out. But, perhaps I would have better luck changing wicks again.
  25. Hi everyone, I have been testing various fragrances in little 4-ounce quilted jelly jars, using GW444 wax & CSN wicks from CandleScience. I'm just having a few issues. The jar diameter is 2.5". I narrowed it down to two sizes, CSN9 and CSN12. I have noticed that these wicks curl to one side, so usually the wax melts to the glass on one side but leaves a lot of hangup on the other. They're pretty rigid, so it's hard to twist them when pouring. Neither wick cleans the sides of the jars until nearly the end, when much of the wax hangup finally melts down. However, the 12s definitely burn too hot; the flame is too large, soots a bit, and melt pool gets too deep. The 9s are much better, but again, they pretty much tunnel until almost the end of the candle, when the excess wax finally melts down off the sides. I feel like they just don't burn very prettily, even though the scent throw is wonderful. Any suggestions? Should I keep trying with these wicks or maybe test a different kind? Thanks for any help. It's so frustrating! **I should add that i use a 6% fragrance load and no dyes or other additives.
