  1. Today, for the first time in like ever I thought I turned my presto pot off, but I actually turned it up to 400 degrees I went to clean my kitchen and then noticed a burnt smell. Thankfully my wax didn't catch fire but it was pretty darn hot. I say I have to toss the wax because it's no good now. My sister says no, just let it cool off. I'm thinking NO but figured I would come to ask the experts. What do you guys think?
  2. I agree with Flicker. It can be overwhelming to try too many variables at once. Read up on the different waxes and pick one that you think you'll like. Like Old Glory, I use 464 and I really like it. My cousin makes candles and when she used 464, she hated it. So you have to test and find what fits your personal preference. There is no one correct answer. I know that with 464, I let the candles cure for about 2 weeks before lighting or selling them. I remember falling in love with the pineapple coconut scent and couldn't wait to try it. I made my candle and waited about three days before testing it. Couldn't smell a thing. I wanted to cry! I ended up sticking it in a box and forgetting about it. I found it a few months down the line and boy did that little sucker cook! So if you aren't getting the throw you want with 464, sit it aside for about two weeks and see if the throw gets better. There are other issues like candle nose that may make you think your candles aren't throwing. Can anyone else smell them? I've used ECO wicks and get a decent throw with them. I have since switched to CDs though. Maybe try a sampler pack of the CDs and Premiere wicks before attempting to blend the wax. We know that 464 is capable of giving a very good throw, so before dumping or blending it, you may want to consider testing other variables. It's much cheaper to buy one wax than to keep having to blend. HTH Good luck!
  3. OOh, I have some of their Fresh Laundry FO on my shelf. I think I'll try it in 464. I'm in West Hollywood often and they are about a 30 minute drive from there. I may go ahead and pick up more of their FO since you like them Chris. I just hate that their status jars are such a mess. I liked them until my most recent box.
  4. It's really breaking my heart. I started with Candle Science, so I'm a little attached to them. I'm getting together an order to submit to Peak. I received a coupon for 25% off shipping. Good enough for me. Get it together Candle Science!!
  5. I really love Shea butter. I use Mango and Cocoa butter as well, but Shea...I put that stuff in everything. The graininess doesn't bother me. Suzy, I have tried your body butter and you need not change a single thing. It is AMAZING!
  6. Nice candles!!! Am I the only one that gets turned on by a smooth, creamy, even pour? Nicely done Phoenix!
  7. Hey guys, I'm looking to switch containers. I currently use the status jars from general wax in LA but this is the second shipment of jars that I've received that was full of wavy glass, so I'm mad and I want to switch. I realize that I can get status jars from almost any supplier, but I'm just wondering what are some of your favorite containers?
  8. Puma, sometimes you get lucky and everything is in stock at one warehouse. For the most part, I don't have a problem with my orders, but it's pretty disappointing when it does happen. Eta: I got the split shipping notice yesterday, so it's still happening...
  9. I haven't used the 20oz tureen, only the 11oz and that sucker was a pain to wick with the Eco wicks and 464. It's a beautiful jar and I hate that a I didn't take more time to figure it out. I just ended up going with a straight jar to save myself some pain and frustration. I think your tests are coming along much better than mines ever did! I've got a bunch of the 11oz laying around. Maybe I will give them another go. Also, is it bad that I read right over your typo like it was nothing? Lol, we all speak the same language!
  10. I just placed an order with them and received a split shipping notification as well. Can't remember what it was for, but I remember removing it from my cart immediately. My shipping charges were already $70. No way was I spending another $14 for whatever it was. Shipping fees are absolutely awful. I wish I could move to Reno or someone would open a warehouse here in Vegas. My only options here are Michaels and Hobby Lobby and I rebuke them both.
  11. Congrats on taking the plunge! I usually leave my pour pot on a griddle on low/warm in between pours. It's not very hot so I don't worry about the fragrance burning off. Then again, I use 464. Hopefully some paraffin users can share their tips. Get ready for loads of testing. It never ends. Good luck!
  12. I've just now realized that there was an introductory section of the forum. Geesh! What's your name? Shoegal How old are you? 30 something or other. Who really keeps track of such things LOL Where do you live? I spend my time between Las Vegas, and Los Angeles How long have you been making candles/soap/whatever? I make candles, body butters, body scrubs & lip balms at the moment. I started making candles about 5 years ago. I started working with body butters, scrubs and lip balms about a year and a half ago. I really want to try soaps, but I am a little nervous about it. How did you get started making candles/soap/whatever? I started making candles for my mother. She loves candles I fell into the whole "paraffin will kill you" bs that was going around the internet. I wanted to make her a healthy alternative, so I started making soy candles. I've found that I absolutely loved it. I spent almost two years testing and making candles for her. Then it spread to her friends, my friends...more of our family and now, here we are. Are you married? Any kids? I've been married for 3 years to a man that I dated for 8 years before finally caving and saying "I DO" I'm joking. He's awesome and I adore him. For now anyway. Haha! If candle/Soap making isn't your primary job, what do you do? This is my job. Other than that, I'm a stay at home wife to my awesome husband and a stay at home aunt to my wonderful niece. Toddlers are a handful when you're trying to run your own home based business, but I love her to pieces. Anything else we should know? Hmm, I'm addicted to research, chicken fingers and oreo cookies. I am also obsessed with computers. I have 7 of them and I'll go nuts if I come across another one that I want because I'll just have to have it. No ifs ands or butts about it. Oh, I'm a pretty decent photographer too. That's about all I can think of right now
  13. Another vote for Peach Nectar from CS. I usually don't go for fruity scents, but I am addicted to their Peach Nectar. It's easily one of my top 5 favorite scents.
  14. Does anyone have a sample pack for these wicks? I've been wanting to try them but don't have the slightest clue on what sizes I need for testing.
  15. Looks like I found the answer to my question. Nevermind
  16. Hi There, So I have a basic body butter concoction that I make with two of my little cousins. We usually have a spa/pamper party and I'll do their nails and toes and let them make their own body butters using shea butter and coconut oil. The next time they come over, one of the girls wants to make her butter pink and the other wants to make hers purple. Can anyone give any advice as to what I need to buy for them to be able to color their butters? All I have on deck is candle dye and I don't think that's going to cut it Thanks!
  17. I realize that this is an old thread, but I literally gasped when I saw this. Wow! So beautiful Vicky! Excellent work!
  18. I seem to sell jars moreso than tins, but I prefer the tins. I guess it depends on the market. Almost every candle that I make for my friends and family are in tins. I started out using ECO wicks and I do like them. I also like CDs. I have seen Old Glory recommend Premieres with 464, so I have some of those on the way too. Testing is just neverending!
  19. Very nice of Heather to respond to this thread. I've had great experience working with her and CS in general. I really hope that something can be done about the shipping. I'd almost rather see an item listed as out of stock than be charged an extra $15 to ship it from another warehouse. I wonder if there's a way to just set up the system as to where if something is out of stock at one warehouse then everythig ships from the other warehouse. I'd rather wait a little longer for my order then pay double for shipping.
  20. I don't think they're going to stop it to be honest. It's been that way for as long as I can remember. When it happens to me, I either remove the item or change sizes if it's a FO. I just try not to wait until I'm totally out of something before I place the order because you never know.
