  1. This really helped me understand how a wick works. www.wicksunlimited.com/combustion_drawings.php
  2. Your work is terrific Bruce. Can almost taste those pies:drool: .
  3. Here's one I did for a test. Was happy with this burn (no hugging). Ued a 30 flat ply. It tunnelled some, but didn't want it to overflow. If you try to get too close to the corners, the sides will run over.
  4. WoW:yay: Those are great. Can you describe the FO?
  5. Not a wax that will mottle as it is a preblend with additives in it.
  6. What a great idea:yay: Last year when I gave my SIL candle burning instructions with her Christmas candle, she said, "for gods sake its just a damn candle" I decided not to give her anymore candles, but now I think I'd like to give her this one. That probably would change her mind.
  7. This is one of the best pages I have found on wicks. It gives all the manufacturers. If you click on the different manufacturers, it will give you information. www.wicksunlimited.com/candle_wicks.php Like Fern, I've tried almost all of the wicks and found that the I liked the LX wicks in containers. In pillars, I usually like the flat ply, but recently have changed to HTP when the fragrance load is high or strong. They don't seem to wimp out on me during the second and third burn. Kept having to trim and wick up on other wicks or ended up with real flame throwers. Really wish it was true that a wick actually "self rimmed". As Henryk says it depends on your wax. The truth is you have to take suggesions and then keep testing to find out what works for you . Wicking is a PITA evertime I decide to do something new.
  8. Janet from Creative Gem Molds made a coffee bean mold for me last year. Didn't take pictures but it works well. Haven't made many because you sure have to make alot of wax beans. Really glad you brought this topic up. It helps everyone to know these things.
  9. Well, I'd probably buy them at the mall. I like the look of layers that are not perfect divisions and are blurry. Its hard to make layers of vastly contrasting colors. Tried with red and while last xmas and kept getting red and pink no matter what I did. Also I've found that really tilted layers are more likely to break apart.
  10. I do run the heat gun over my molds just to take the chill off them, like above. They seem to come out smoother. I also get pinholes when working with a hard to mix in FO, like sugar cookie. I have to raise the temp. to get it to mix in, or I get lots of little bubbles of FO forming on the outside of the votives.
  11. Wonderful! You did a great job of arranging the embeds
  12. This is very interesting. I've actually seen candles for sale that have lots of fingernailing (I think I saw them at Michaels). Before seeing topics on fingernailing on this board, I thought it was just another technique that I wanted to learn because I thought they looked so good. Wonder how they would burn?
  13. My one ounce ones seem about the right size. Too big and the customer has to cut them up so the melter doesn't overflow. Too small and they could go dry. the size of the melter is something to think about.
  14. That's what I've been doing, Robin. Just like using wick pins more than setting up the wicks. I'm not the most patient person:cheesy2:
  15. I love the look. However, take care if those are real beans. They are flammable. Made one with the outershell of hard 160 mp wax (where the beans were) and poured soft wax into the middle. One of the beans still got away and started to smoke badly (very smelly). Some people do it like your pillar and don't wick the part where the beans are.
  16. I always trim them very short or else I find that I get a high flame that has to be trimmed right away anyhow:cheesy2:
  17. great looking chunky pillar:grin2:
  18. I use a samll white saucer. It works fairly well.
  19. Yes, the first word that came to mind for me was yummy too:D
  20. I love those colors! Have found that I can get a rustic (not mottled) with alsmost any typr of pillar wax but don't get as much frosty look as when I add steric to plain paraffin.
  21. So anyone (Alan, Donita others) know how much the clear crystal raise the melt point @ 1tsp pp wax?:undecided
  22. Probably I wont' have to run the pin in and out as the wick hole is usually bigger than the wick. Going to try it your way anyhow:D
