What do you like to sub for Crisco?

Be careful of the high polyunsatured fat content of Crisco. It has much more than you would normally see in an oil with a solid texture. Too much of that makes a mediocre recipe and contributes to DOS.

As far as substituting for Crisco, you have to know the fatty acid profile and use an oil that has a similar balance or a combination of oils that gets you about the right percentages. I think this is the breakdown for the latest version of Crisco but I'm not 100% sure:

Myristic 0.4%

Palmitic 14.1%

Stearic 10.6%

Oleic 44.5%

Linoleic 24.5%

Linolenic 1.6%

All the different versions of Crisco are confusing. I just found a label for the all-veg shortening sticks on the Smucker Crisco.com site. If this is correct, it doesn't sound like a very good soaping oil.

Saturated fat 25% (palmitic & stearic)

Monounsatured fat 21% (oleic)

Polyunsaturated fat 50% (mostly linoleic)

Apart from the whacky fatty acid profiles, one reason I wouldn't soap with this product that they keep changing it and half the time you don't know what soap properties to expect.

I guess it would have helped if I stated why I wanted to sub Crisco:rolleyes2. I do not want to use any soy in my recipe. Doesn't Crisco contain soybean oil? I am also trying to keep the recipes vegan. Plus, like Top pointed out Crisco ingredients keep changing and it may make it difficult to know what soap properties to expect. I'll just stick with CO, PKO and Babassu. Thanks everyone for the help.

I used Crisco for nearly two years and I've never had a problem with it. I can't/won't ship palm in the summer so I use Crisco, lard & PKO instead. I like it my soaps and will continue to use it. It adds to the creamy lather that my customers demand in my DSM soap. It's basically the "Shortning and Shea" recipe here in the recipe section of the boards.
