Gail C.
I recently started making soy candles but I’m having trouble with them. The wax turns into a well when I burn the wick. Can anyone make suggestions?

TallTayl
Looks like you need to wick up a size or two. id start from a fresh top off, not from the bottom of the tunnel.
Gail C.
What are a “fresh top off, not from the bottom of the tunnel“?
TallTayl
Pour new wax to level the candle off. Don’t stuff a bigger wick into the tunnel. Basically, start over from the beginning.
NightLight
Gail - you need a certain size wick depending on how wide your glass jar is type of wax fragrance used and how much you have used type of wick - there are many wicks htp, eco, cd, rrd, premier etc. All burn differently with different wax and fragrance. Look at the Candle Science wick guide https://www.candlescience.com/learning/wick-guide Here is a helpful guide https://www.candlescience.com/learning/choosing-the-right-wick-size How to prevent candle tunnel which you have https://support.candlescience.com/hc/en-us/articles/115007606407-What-is-Tunneling-and-How-do-I-Fix-It-

TallTayl
What brand and size of wick? you're in the right track. Just refill the jar with a larger size wick, let it cure a week or so, compare.

NightLight
What kind of soy wax? What is the name of the wick style for example CD, HTP
Gail C.
I used 100% natural soy wax and CD-2 wicks.
Crafty1_AJ
A CD-2 looks to be too small for that size jar. You'll want to try again with a much larger size wick. What is the diameter of the jar? You'll want to choose wick sizes according to the diameter of the jar. CD-2, for example, is designed for a 1/2" to 1" diameter jar. That's not to say every 1/2" to 1" diameter candle will burn well with that wick size...but it's a starting point for your testing. Here is a CD wick chart to help you get started. CD-2 Extra Small - .5 - 1" CD-3 Small - 1.5 - 2" CD-4 Small - 1.5 - 2" CD-5 Small - 2" CD-6 Small - 2 - 2.25" CD-7 Small - 2.25 - 2.5" CD-8 Medium - 2.5 - 3" CD-10 Medium - 3 - 3.5" CD-12 Large - 3.5" CD-14 Large - 3.5 - 4" CD-16 Large - 4" CD-18 Extra Large - 4 - 4.5" CD-20 Extra Large - 4.5" CD-22 Extra Large - 4.5 - 5" Edited October 15, 2019 by Crafty1_AJ

Gail C.
It’s 2.5”. I just purchased some 6” wicks. Thanks for the chair. It will definitely come in handy. Do you know any companies that sell nontoxic fragrances and what is the best way to fragrance soy wax?
Crafty1_AJ
CD wicks are a good choice for soy wax, so you made a good decision there! Just bump up that size in your next tester.
The Candle Nook
There are lots of good fragrance oil companies out there — seems like you’ve started with supplies from bulk apothecary - so you may try some of their FO too. Just search around on this site for FO ideas
kandlekrazy
It does seem a bit small. Are you sure you didn't also have an air pocket along the wick? With soy, I found pouring down the wick helped with that and then poke holes (stainless meat pins work great, they aren't as thick as skewers) and repour or heat gun. Karen Ov
Pouring down the wick sure has helped me a lot..so much better
Gail C.
Kandlekrazy, there were also some air pockets around the wick. I’ll try your suggestions. Thanks!
