  1. I have searched and searched the forum , and I know what I am going to ask has already been done to death on here. fragrance load is doing my head in at the moment.

I use ecosoya CB . I am in Australia so all the measurements given on here are in US measurements. i am not that good at maths or numbers (improving though with candle making lol).

The instructions I got with the wax was 10%FO load, now I am finding that I am getting what looks like an oil slick on my tops. I have tried different % but haven't struck on the right one.

Ecosoya site says 10% - 12% load but if you go into the questions part they also recommend 5% load.

1lb of wax in my measurements is 453grams

I measure out 624grams per batch as it does 4 candles beautifully. Can someone help calculate the FO load for me please.

I'm assuming that 624 grams is the weight of the wax alone, to which you are adding fragrance oil. If that's not what I am reading, please ignore what I'm about to do.

Take 624 and divide by 0.9. That gives you 693 grams.

That's your total weight with fragrance oil.

Therefore the fragrance oil part is 693-624=69 grams

Notice that 69/693 is pretty darn close to 10%

Generically, the fragrance weight is Wax weight times fragrance load divided by (1-fragrance load) where fragrance load is expressed as a decimal.... 10% = 0.1

  2. Hell I'm the first to admit I'm wrong so maybe it is me. I have been heating the wax to 155, adding the scent and dye (liquid) stirring for 3 minutes then letting it cool to 125. I get my jar ready and pour at 120. Am I doing something wrong?

    I heat to 180 - 185, maybe that makes a difference???

  3. Hi RS,

Oops, should have mentioned that I've tried the heat gun! My bad. Using the heat gun has caused the top of the candle where I melted the wax to shrink away from the glass and then I have a circular looking wet spot. I'm just not sure about leaving the wax to cool in my pouring pot - I'd have to double boiler it to re-melt and that's not how I've beem melting my wax.

Have you ever heard of anyone using silicon ice-cube trays to pour their wax into and then after they've cooled, pop them out for a remelt in the microwave? Or is that a no-no with the FO already in the wax?

Interesting, with CB135, I haven't had this problem. How long are you heat gunning for? Because I'm doing it just long enough to smooth the top out and there's no "depth" of remelted wax on the sides of my tumbler.. I hope that makes sense... and at times I have to heat gun more than once.

  4. For soy, buy yourself a heat gun in your HD or Lowe's paint department and zap those rough tops away!

The tough part about doing repours is that it can leave a little line between the old and repoured wax. If you do want to proceed, typically the temp of the wax is a bit higher than your original pour to try and melt the old wax a bit so it blends in. Most ppl would keep the remaining wax in the melting pot and use that. You wouldn't want to create a new batch of wax just for the repour.

  5. Babean...

I use CB135 as well and sometimes get great adhesion and sometimes not, even within the same batch. You can do a search on wet spots and find all sorts of threads on it. The reality of the situation is that it is just the nature of the wax, and there's no real way to stop it, regardless of any instructions from the manufacturer or anyone else. I hate it too, but it just happens that way.

As for throw, I find that most oils throw quite well in CB135, but again, hot throw is a very subjective thing.

I can fill up a small room, but not a large room and certainly not a house. Some of my best fragrance oils I can smell down the hall a bit. It really is a matter of opinion and preference.

    Good luck!

  6. Sorry to hear that. I wouldn't do that show again either. But I wouldn't cancel the other ones (unless they are done by the same promoter/people). You can have a bum show one week and a fantastic one the next.

    I agree with this post.
