  1. Do you ever use clear to calm down the colors? I use clear in everything that I need to lighten up a bit. I hate it that now days they have sooo many names for colors that we just called red or purple with red years ago. lol Do you do half dips? Thats what I call it when I go in one color and dont hit the water to cool it but go right in another color. That gives you a small amount of color where a full dip would be too much. Bruce
  2. It could be as simple as the type of bag you are using... If your using a regular type plastic bag your scent will go away just because of using that type of bag. Most chandlers know that but Im always surprised by how many dont. Bruce
  3. Thanks, and you know I also had my famous afro hair 30 years ago this month too!
  4. LOL You silly nut you! Thanks! Justright, my dad trained me and he was trained a few months before that by a guy in Michigan. My first show was in Keokuk Iowa at a tiny indoor shopping mall. We were set up right inside the entry way of the JC Penny store. I remember how cool I thought I looked with my just purchased "Boston" belt buckle. (music group). They had a parade that ended right in front of the mall so all the marchers came in about the time I started carving one of my first candles ever in public... the marchers were of course 20 or 30 cheerleaders. Toughest candle I have ever had to make. :shocked2: Oh and vicky.... your bad
  5. Ohhhh yes Im on it! Would be more interesting to me if he would not have spammed me a few years ago on another board sending me information (more than once) about this set up he has. Most if not all of the carvers here use his setup from what I hear but anyone that takes my email off a board and spam emails me about how HE can teach ME how to carve a candle? wow You could tell every few months "someone" would post about interest in candle carving and just like clockwork the next post would be a link to his site. Anyone that replied to the post would get an email with a link to his site..in my case twice. I would bet my life on the original post and the post with the link were all by him and no one will ever change my mind on that. That was many years ago I'm sure he doesn't have to do that kind of dredging now. It is one of the easier setups and its much cheaper then any of the other options so I bet hes doing very well with word of mouth, shows and the demos he does. More power to him, but it left a sour taste in my mouth. On a side note, I started as a full time candle carver 30 years ago this month, wow time does fly. I do what I can to help fellow carvers as I have answered many board and PM questions but I also try not to cheapen the craft/art of candle carving. Bruce
  6. My weights and measures man told me the whole idea of having a weight or item count is to give the customer the information they will need to decide the value of a product. If you have 6 tomatoes in a tray you dont need to label it as 6 tomatoes because they can see them. If you have a standard size container the same goes for that. Pints, quartz ect its a known size to everyone. Candle jars come in all shapes and sizes so its hard to tell which jars hold more and which ones hold less without the net weight on the product. I use wide mouth half pint jars and do not put a weight on the product and "my" weights guy says thats fine because its a standard size that we all know. I just call mine half pint jar candles not 8 ounce jar candles because as we all know liquid measures and weight measures are not the same and even liquids are not the same like water and wax.. wax is lighter. Im not saying to do it this way but until someone shows up and tells me to make changes Im going with what I was told by a man that has done weights and measures for 20+ years. Bruce
  7. Seen them on tv but this is the first time to see them "in person" lol I just wonder if that "core" is just a visual marketing tool because I dont see why it couldnt have been made in just one pouring like all the other candles are made? Thats my idea on it... visual marketing but it is smart and everyone seems to like that fabreeze stuff so im sure they will sell great for them. Maybe I need to dip a taper candle and stick it in the middle of my jars. Probably get a C&D letter in the mail if i did. Bruce
  8. You ever wax your car? What does the water drops do... they run off right? Same here, most of them run off but if your water is old sometimes the water doesnt run off good but its not really a problem. Bruce
  9. I never heat my knife either but I really don't see how that would help much. I think that video was edited because at her speed and looking at the finished candle I'm thinking it was more like a full 8-10 minutes to carve it. She does do a nice job on them though.... anyone notice the last wax coat and then right in the glaze (no water dip) and she says the glaze penetrates thru the top layers of wax?? I think she has been sniffing too much glaze if you ask me. Ummm and isn't that a freaking monster size dip tank!!! That would cost several thousands dollars to have built now days. Bruce
  10. I dont think anyone has ever posted this before. She must really use wax that is doctored up because it looks like she is moving in slow motion to me. I have to carve about 3 times faster then that to get finished before the wax gets hard. Bruce =
  11. OHHHHH wait til you look up wax bombs where they heat up wax real hot and throw water balloons in the wax to make it blow up. Now THAT be looking fun.... oh wait i did that once scratch that I had to go to JC penny and get new underware cause of that. Bruce
  12. This was kind of fun to watch and thought some of you may also enjoy it. Isn't that guy one of the original monkeys or beatles... Bruce
  13. I always used bnl (great) but gave ng a try and it was nice but not perfect... then I tried candle makers store aka steve and that was better than all of them hands down. Bruce
  14. I have tried a TON of ginger peach scents and the bestest closest to pier 1 was from connies but she Cut it out of here line up! I been trying to get her to put if back in... said i had to buy 25 lbs if I wanted it special ordered. If everyone emailed her she might get it back in? It was by far the best of all the ones I have tried and there must have been a dozen i have tried. If I remember right it was missys version that she had when she bought out a bunch of missys stuff at auction. Bruce
  15. If the candle is of so low a quality that it will not even burn right your wasting your money buying it and your time by trying to fix it. If the burn is that bad I'm sure your not getting what you should as far as insect repellent goes. Look around at some of the senior members sites and try a good candle. Most citronella candles made by the mass producers are cheap and not effective. Bruce
  16. I used one of my dip tank vats to make it... I didnt even remember making it lol I think a saw some real big ones on trishs site, you might try there? Bruce
  17. It would have to be the self combusting kind though. Most of that stuff is just like crushing up a dipped cone incense and has little to do with what most die hards call real incense. Bruce
  18. Your right scented! See, Im wicken... every day, jars, tapers, molds im a wicken fool, But WICCAN yeah thats the other peeps that she was talking abotu, sorry to confuse ya I just went with the spelling in the post above.
  19. I don't agree that real incense (resins) are just or even mostly for wicken use. There is a yahoo group that I am a member of that is devoted to resin incense and from what I have seen its just what some people use for meditation and balance. No more no less its just going back to how its been done for thousands of years.. we seem to have forgot how it use to be before walmart was on each corner. Its like saying that EO's are for wickens and FO's are for everyone else.. its really natural vs synthetic. IMO I have sold both and there is way more interest in dipped incense because of easy use and variety of scents and to tell you the truth most of the resin incense just plain suck as far as smelling good. You are burning a spice when you are using resins and most of them have an "off" smell that comes along with burning that you have to get use to before you can like them. Like the first time you drink a beer the guys always told me you would get use to the taste. My thinking was if it tastes like crap why drink it. The last beer I had was in a disco in Kansas City it was my 2nd attemp to be cool by drinking a beer.... Im not cool to this day I guess. Bruce
  20. wow your quick... one minute after I post it and your already trying to scam it away from me! I was working on a wedding candle for a board member and I decided to take a break after making 4 versions trying to get the right colors for her candle. Never made these colors or exact shape before but for a first try I think it captures the sunflower pic well. Bruce
  21. Pumpkin Pie and lavender they say will increase blood flow in men to their ..... you know. I was going to make a candle with those 2 scents and call it PIE-AGRA For real i was! Just didn't get time to test it for scent throw or errr if it was effective in other ways. That site that had that information listed also said that women getting the blood going with good and plenty (licorice) and some other scent I cant remember. I had it bookmarked for years but I think the last time I clicked on it the site was gone or changed and I couldn't find it.
  22. I was thinking the same thing! Looks like palm, and if it is thats a fantastic idea. Would cost a butt load to make but they look good! What kind of retail are you going to set them at? Bruce
  23. That's some good stuff you have there! Bruce
