  1. I do this will all my micas, but I don't use FCO. I use one of my soaping oils, usually Almond oil or Sunflower oil. (that way I don't have to add the additional oil on my ingredient list)
  2. Oh man, I see a nightmare coming since this is going to hit right at the heart of the busy season.... *sigh* Why can't places just leave well enough alone? GRRR
  3. I'm in 1 or 2 groups fro candlemaking but rarely every go on there for the exact reason that they are just 'not good' I'm in way more soapmaking groups, and those too are hit and miss. There are a few good ones I frequent, that are pretty decent, but some that are cringe-worthy, which I don't frequent often.
  4. Exactly! They sure don't make it easy. I didn't know a thing about it, which is upsetting enough, but even after I found out, they are very limited with the information on the site... *sigh*
  5. I knew your face from another forum, but I'm still glad we got to see it.
  6. Well, I think I may have to buy both kinds, which is irritating. :-/ The one I have now works on both my iPad and my Android phone, which works perfect, because my iPad is WiFi only, and if the wifi is spotty or not there at all, I can easily just switch it to my phone which uses my 4G data. UGH - Well, I have the 49.99 one ordered, and guess will have to look into what it takes to get the Android one. I have a show on Oct 1 (two shows actually) and a few in November and December, so hopefully I will have something resolved by then. We'll see...
  7. Look at you Trapp!! What a lovely booth! Fits your style perfectly.
  8. Candy Corn is basically Vanilla mixed with Honey - maybe you can try mixing your own? I think I've weighed in, but my favorite still remains C&S Honey Vanilla/Candy Corn scent.
  9. Let the addiction begin! Congratulations. They look great.
  10. ? I don't know exactly what you mean? The fragrance supplier either has the info on their FO page, or you can ask them for it. That's the info I use. For instance NG has this on their site - http://www.naturesgardencandles.com/mas_assets/theme/ngc/pdf/fragrtest.pdf It's this type of information I go off when deciding how much fragrance to use in any B&B application.
  11. Wax levels can affect the burn results, especially if you are testing for wicks. To me, it almost sounds like your wicks were too big, and got some tunneling, which is why it didn't reach the sides, but also why it was consuming fast, had a too large flame, and you were getting mushrooms. Hangup in the corners of a square jar can be a bit typical - they are hard jars to wick.
  12. AHHH I knew it was something like that!
  13. IFRA is the usage rate in %'s to which a fragrance is skin safe. Different applications have different rates. Like lotions usually have a lower rate than soaps because it's a leave on product vs a wash off, etc., (I can't remember what the acronym stands for but I think it's "International Fragrance Rate Allowance" but could be totally wrong) Some suppliers will list them on their site, some won't, but you can always call the supplier and they should have that information readily available if they rate their FO's as "skin safe".
  14. Soapcalc defaults to .5oz ppo but you can adjust it accordingly. I try to always refer to the IFRA for amounts of FO (but usually will use 5-6% depending on fragrance and strength) I rarely use EO's but when I do it's not more than .5oz ppo. TT and Candy gave excellent advice also.
  15. Which is why I said if you wick it "correctly" Just because it burns more wax, is hotter and gives a better throw does not mean it is wicked correctly or is safe. I would rather have safe over any other scenario. I do not want to be responsible for a fire in my own home or anyone else's
  16. I have no idea why your wax is blueish that is a weird phenomenon - but I doubt the throw or the blue has anything to do with the flashpoint. Flashpoint is solely the temperature at which a fragrance will ignite when exposed to a spark or flame. I personally have not used Nag Champa in anything (can't stand the scent, so don't use it) so I have no idea if it could be that or not. It certainly could be though...
  17. . Experimenting with a wax recipe is much more cumbersome than pouring in a larger container and i personally don't want to go through a bunch of testing to get a candle to throw. This is why experimenting and testing is so important. If you wick the jar correctly, (to be safe, not just to throw scent) there is no way a 12oz candle will burn longer than a 22oz jar. If you don't want to go through the testing for your own personal candles, then that's okay (I still wouldn't recommend it) but if you ever want to sell I would highly recommend it. Either that or get yourself a really good insurance policy.
  18. Everyone pretty much elaborated, and expanded on my post. Exactly - I've been making/selling candles for almost 17 years now, and the jars I use are pretty much the "signature" of my candle business, so changing containers would not make sense. If a scent doesn't throw for me, then there has to be another reason, other than just the size/type of container I am using.
  19. I don't think any scent will come through, but I'd love to see the specks in the finished soap...
  20. You are right, it is very important. I think the main reason it's not mentioned a lot is because a lot of the people asking, already have specific jars they are already set on using. Anyway, great input and welcome to the board
  21. Are you a member of the Guild? It's on their site. http://www.soapguild.org/conference/ for general information http://www.soapguild.org/conference/2016/overview.php for the specific 2016 conference
  22. I have not been, but I have heard from many many people that it is very well worth it, and in a year or two (not 2016) I do plan on going. I do believe they do more than just soapmaking and a lot of B&B informationals as 'classes' as well. I can't wait until I can afford the conference, flight, and hotel fees to be able to go... (that's an almost $2000 commitment for me though)
  23. I do the same. Mine don't bleed, but because of the whitening they do seem a little faded or washed out and not quite as brilliant as they would if I didn't use the TD. But like I said, they don't bleed.
  24. Okay, I just got on square and preordered mine.
  25. It does it to me too. We just bought a ton of shelving to help get me organized, and I will be working on putting those up and getting everything organized and categorized, etc, so that I can go full fledged next weekend or the next after. Before you know it, it's going to be Halloween, and too late to make up anything for the season!
