Finished my 1st forever gel. There is an oyster cup in the ivy bowl with filled with Peaks Ocean scented gel. It's sitting in the window now to try and reduce the no. of bubbles. LOL These things are harder than anything I've done with paraffin.
Here's a pic of the 1st tin I tested after the last burn. OK to far I think. A little wick debris in the bottom but no soot. Do you see any problems? BTW these tins get really hot. Be sure to test on a heat resistant surface and include that in your warning label. I'm looking at cutting some 4" ceramic tiles to offer with the tins. Tried to find coasters but they were too pricey for me. Burned for a total of 39 hrs. Testing the Snickerdoddle today.
Got a sample of this FO and tried it in a couple of different glasses. I made little unscented strawberries out of my hurricane wax. Poured at 200 in layers adding strawberries to each layer. As you can see, the strawberries started to melt. Should I have added something to the wax? I'm just not having any luck with wax embeds that I make.
There were several posts on the old board on how to test new scent combos. The short version is to use Q tips. For a 50/50 mix dip the end of Q tips in each FOs. Then put the Q tips on a ziplock bag or small glass jar. I save my glass spice jars for this. For a 66/33 mix you would dip 2 Q Tips on the 1st FO and 1 Q Tip in the 2nd. And so on. I take my little scent jars to our weekly race party and have the ladies sniff them and give me feed back on the combos. Then I take the ones they like and make a test candle. HTH
You could try using a pair of needle nose pliers to pull the wick out. You may need to cut away some wax from the top of the candle to get enough wick to grap onto. I done this with containers but never anything 9" tall. Then you insert a new wick up from the bottom. Since you are going to a bigger wick you may need to tie a thread to the new wick and using a needle pull the thread thru then the wick - like they do with electric lines in a wall. Good Luck
I'm not good at interpreting the wick charts but maybe this will help. According to a post by Robin on the old board the burn rate for LX 16 is 6.0 g/hr and for LX 18 is 7.0 g/hr. And according to Atkins, Pierce etc chart the 51z wick has a burn rate of 6.4 g/hr. It's sort of in the middle between the LX 16 and LX 18. I didn't have any burn rate info on the RRD wicks. Good Luck
Soapy - do you scent your ice cubes? I tried Strawberry & Champagne tonight with limited success. Maybe they'll look better in the morning. LOL Have a sample of Tequila Sunrise to try next and thought that should have ice cubes.
Val, I had a hang up in one corner until the 5th burn in my sq tin. Don't think you need to worry about hang ups. It'll catch up. I'm on the 6th burn now - about 37 hrs. Sure looks good to me. Can't tell about the sooting from the pic. Bet it smells great. I used the low smoke 21 zincs and so far no soot / smoking. The last burn will tell the story. That's where I usually have a sooting problem.
What Gottabt said. Don't blow the ballon up more than 5 to 7". I dipped mine at 160 but kept getting cracks from the top down. You could try a better quality ballon. I never had one burst - just the cracked shell. Had to trim off too much of the tops. Here is the link to the pitiful one's I made. http://www.candletech.com/cgi-local/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=gallery;action=display;num=1094948977;start=11#11 This year I'm watching Big Lots for Halloween jars. LOL
Gosh, with silicone, WD40 and Pam it must have shot out of the mold. Glad you figured it out. As you well know, it is usually some little thing that causes the problem. A job well done.
Peaks UV really isn't that expensive considering you are only using 1/2 tsp pp. I'm more concerned about forgetting to use it on products I do want to sell - ancient minds and all that. So I do what several others do. Add it when I add wax.
Lovely wedding candle. your son and future DIL should be thrilled. Your scent combo sounds fantastic. I've never tried more than 3 FOs in a scent combo. You are a definite adventurer. Great job.
