  1. Replying to own thread lol As a side thought, could I buy/make a regular cream soap base and thicken it somehow?
  2. Im trying to duplicate this base: http://www.voyageursoapandcandle.com/Natural_Cream_Soap_Base_p/40400.htm as I think it will fit my needs for next project, but its a bit expensive and I can only find it in Canada. Does anyone know a more local (USA) vendor that makes a similar thick, creamy type soap base? I dont know much about soap making yet but id love to learn how to make a really thick, pasty base. I work with my hands a lot and need a "mechanics soap" with walnut shells. The description of this base goes as follows: We manufacture this beautiful creamy soap with a unique soapmaking technique that is a blend of natural cold process and liquid soap making. The result is a natural cream soap that is a wonderful cleansing base that is both gentle and moisturizing and a great base for use in making luxurious facial soaps, natural shaving creams, gardeners and mechanics hand cleaners and more. A 100% natural cream soap manufactured using traditional soap making methods. Product consistency is thick and creamy but can be made thinner to suit your product needs by adding additional water, floral hydrosols, liquid extracts, etc. Technical Specs: Ingredients: Aqua (Purified Water), Stearic Acid, Glycerin, Saponified Olive Oil, Saponified Coconut Oil, and boric acid (natural thickener) NOTE: This Cream Soap base uses boric acid as a natural pH adjuster and thickener, but as per Health Canada regulations it fully complies with labelling requirements based on maximum usage levels and is only in the product at below .1%. As such, no cautions to not be used on broken skin etc. are required on the label. Any info on how to make this or a US supplier of a similar product please please!!! HALP lol
  3. How do you convert tablespoons to grams? I have a lip balm recipe a friend gave me but it reads: 1.5 tablespoons X oil 2.5 tablespoons Y butter 3.0 tablespoons Z (beeswax) What is the proper method of converting this into grams? Then to have that equal 100%? Id like to get it to read grams so I can maybe tweak it to add a touch of lanolin and Vitamin E. TYIA
  4. Check your inbox. Have a few more questions for you
  5. Oh wow! Ok, that makes me feel better. How do you like BA's base anyways? What does it compare to? Im wondering with the beeswax how similar it is to a Burts style lip balm. Im not looking to clone theirs, but at the same time I do use it daily and would like to make my own at home with something "in the ballpark" in terms of feel
  6. Is it legally ok to package and resell bases as your own? Meaning, if I purchase a base in bulk, add flavor oil, Vit E, and maybe Lanolin, package it in tubes with my label, can I then by legal terms resell that as my own brand Lip Balm? For the sake of this topic, I know I should be making my own base, but I am only curious at this point about the answer to this question. I have tried many times to make my own base, about 20 different recipes, and have not come up with anything I would use on my lips. Reason I ask is because I plan on making a bunch of lip balms using this base: http://www.bulkapothecary.com/lip-balm-base/ I have tried it out, it is rather nice, and plan on making a few batches for family and friends. At the same time, I have the opportunity to place a few retail boxes in a store that my brother owns. So while I am trying to decide to make more recipes and try and create my own base I wanted to get this question answered. TLDR; Do any of you buy Lip Balm bases in bulk, then package and resell in tubes as your own brand? Thanks. CB
  7. Ya they are great, only problem Im having is wicking the tiny 4 oz ones. My plan was to sell these as "stocking stuffers" at a craft show this winter. Im using the smallest wick I have and its still too big. Premier 725. Luckily I have a new order on its way of some Premier 705 and 710. I hope the smaller ones will help.
  8. most of mine are in the basement where it keeps cooler than the rest of the house. As far as categorizing, heck if I know. I just toss em on the shelf and sift through them as I go! Lol, not the smartest thing but Im not mass producing at this point.
  9. I have a few more if interested for critique. My girlfriend does wedding floral arrangments, so we sorta have an "in" in at least spreading the word about some different decorations for tables. She also does a lot of fundraisers so I came up with this to sell when its ready for non-profit: The idea being a Vicky Secrets type perfume for FO Now Ive also raised a bi-sexual child and around my part of the world same sex marriages are becoming more acceptable. I figured I could help people celebrate and embrace change by offering these. The FO in this case im still unsure about. Im thinking about maybe allowing the couple to choose whichever FO's they want from my lineup and having a "buffet" of fragrances to disperse amongst the tables. Equality for MEN Equality for Woman These next two would be my signature purfume/cologne types. Im still working out which ones and have already tested a few male musky types. Very Sexy Man Very Sexy Woman Thats it for now, I have a bunch more but dont want to bore you all to pieces this early in the morning
  10. I decided to continue any feedback on my own label as to not deter nor hijack the other thread from its OP's topic. Any further feedback or suggestions can go here, and please dont hold anything back. Im new to this and need this critique. Thanks. From previous thread here: justajesuschick: My one goal in making these labels was to be as plain as possible. I HATE labels that I have to stop and figure out whats going on. They just confuse me and my eye tends to just go everywhere. I wanted peoples eyes to just see what they needed to see. Thats it. As far as burn time, cant I use the approximate symbol ~ and a target burn time like I did? I see burn times on candle labels, maybe not all, so whats the proper method of doing this? As far as the licensing rights, the majority of my images have come from https://www.dreamstime.com/ Royalty free images that you basically purchase and can use on stock. At least thats my understanding. Im still researching this and havnt printed any yet because of this. OLD GLORY: OG, I hadnt realized the net weight issue so many thanks on this. These are the things I need feedback on And yes! I adore these tins and now that I have you. Im at a standstill with my 16 oz tins. I use premier wicks and Im thinking I will need to double wick these. Only trouble is, I cant find a wick centering tool to fit these almost 4" openings. Do you use 2 wicks or are you able to keep it single wicked? As a side note, if you were ever interested in doing a "Limited edition" JUMBO candle, check these out: http://www.thecarycompany.com/slip-cover-can-30w02x I was thinking about one day in the future having a Limited edition X-mas tree BIG BOY tin just for the holidays. This is a 32 oz tin. I was at a craft show one year and was listening to a chandler talking about how he sold out in 2 hours of all his JUMBO jars. Maybe it could work for a 32 oz tin? Who knows lol
  11. I have been using Online Labels. http://www.onlinelabels.com/ If you place an online order for labels you can use their design software Meastro. Its a real simple, basic label design software but you can come up with a few good ideas and tweak them to your liking. Then order the labels and have a print shop print them. Just as an example, I recently made a few designs and am leaning towards this particular look. Now mind you, this is my first ever attempt at designing a label so forgive me if it seems....amatuer lol. These arent the "final renditions" I still have some more info to add near the bottom, web address, contact info. Some of the info is just placeholder text and I will fix later, but this gives you an idea of what the program can do. These are for my 8oz tin top lids. Im doing the sides later today. But i can also just resize these to fit my 4oz and 16oz tins when ready. This is for my Macintosh Apple tins. This for my X-mas Tree tins Baby Powder As you can see, I just made a VERY BASIC template and then just changed each one to fit whatever candle type I am making. So far ive made about 14 all using this simple design. Im quite certain you can come up with something better than this lol PS, not to hijack your thread, but if ANYONE has any suggestions, please for the love of God, leave me some feedback on what to change or add. Maybe E'smom and I can learn something from all the wisdom flowing through these forums
  12. This is all great info, thanks Scented. I will be making some FO purchases next week based on some of this feedback. This at least gives me a starting point in finding the purfume or cologne FO I want. Appreciate the help tons
  13. Thanks for the suggestions WoWo. I was going to order some Drakkar type but will hold off on that unless I desperatley need to. As far as the very sexys, why does AH/RE carry two male type FO's and none for a female scent? I figured there would at least be one Very Sexy for Her but didnt find it
  14. i scrolled through about 15 pages of this section and didnt see any mention of purfume or cologne type FO's. Im wondering if anyone has ever used some and where did they get them? I have come across a couple but have no idea if they are any good: Angle Type (CS) https://www.candlescience.com/fragrance/angel-type-fragrance-oil Drakkar Type (CS) https://www.candlescience.com/fragrance/angel-type-fragrance-oil Love Spell (CS) https://www.candlescience.com/fragrance/love-spell-fragrance-oil Moon Lake Musk (CS) https://www.candlescience.com/fragrance/moon-lake-musk-fragrance-oil Cool Waters Type (Fillmore) http://www.fillmorecontainer.com/Cool-Waters-Type-Fragrance-Oil-1-P722.aspx?c=13 Very Sexy for Him (CW) http://www.candlewic.com/store/product.aspx?q=c147,p1283&title=Very-Sexy-for-Him-VS-Type Very Sexy for Her (CW) http://www.candlewic.com/store/product.aspx?q=c99,p1284&title=Very-Sexy-for-Her-VS-Type Axe Kilo Type (CW) http://www.candlewic.com/store/product.aspx?q=c147,p1371&title=Axe-Kilo-Type
  15. For something that is supposed to be primarily red (apple) and something thought of as brown (cinnimon sticks) I think the color is actually spot on! I dont see too many candles this color and if this were my batch, I personnaly would try to replicate this color again. Well done
  16. I live in Maine. So its not really hot except for this past week. Its been 95* with 100% Humidity. Ugh. Broke of few records dating back to late 1940's lol. I guess I will just give it a week and see how firm it gets. I was planning on making more testers of other FO's so all I was wondering was if I had done something wrong. It appears you arent the only one that has messaged me about saying that 4627 will always be "soft" Guess I will just have to let time be the deciding factor if I stick with this wax. i dont mind the messy bits, only thing I care about is how it throws H&C
  17. I'm new to 4627 blend, decided to switch from 464 and see if I have better luck. I made my first batch 26hrs ago and its still "mushy" I can poke my finger through it with no effort. At this point my 464 usually was really solid and on its way to a good cure. I know 4627 is mushy in its original state anyways, I just dont know if it firms up like 464 does or it stays this mushy for good. Anyone have any input on this?
  18. Yes, all good advice and many thanks. To clarify, I will indeed be testing on an 8 oz and 16 oz jar once I get to that point. I guess my question was for scent throw only. Is it ok to test on the 4 oz jar I will be using rather than having to fill a 16 oz jar to test for hot throw?
  19. Are 4 oz jars big enough for testers? In regards to scent throw that is. I realize when testing melt pools I will need to test all size jars I plan on using, but to determine whether or not Im getting proper HT will a 4 oz jar be ok? Or have you folks mostly stuck to 8 oz testers? I do plan on using these 4 oz jars as "stocking stuffer" "small bathroom" type sellers/gifts, so I will need to test this jar anyways. Im just curious if for testing purposes, will 4 oz jars be ok. Im asking because Im currently burning (2) of Yankee Candles 4 oz "Lush Berries" jars and those throw pretty dam good. I have them in my kitchen and they fill the room enough for me. So I guess I was hoping to save some raw materials by only making 4 oz testers buy getting a case of these: http://www.fillmorecontainer.com/4-oz-Straight-Sided-Jars-58-CT-P95.aspx
  20. Thanks CB. Looks like I will put in a new order with Fillmore and start testing asap
  21. Just curious if anyone uses these type or similar "jelly" "salsa" type jars for candles. Like these: http://www.fillmorecontainer.com/16-oz-Straight-Sided-Jars-83-CT-P17.aspx My main concern is wall thickness and glass temp.
  22. If you ever want a Cinnamon type FO, you will fall in love with https://www.candlescience.com/fragrance/red-hot-cinnamon-fragrance-oil You can thank me later for filling your house with the smell of Red Hot Cin 2nd Best IMHO they carry is https://www.candlescience.com/fragrance/macintosh-apple-fragrance-oil Turns your room into an apple orchard. HT is excellent and same for cold. Two very good FO's to at least sample and give a try. Ive used them in soy each at about 9.5% and been very pleased. You can add more but I was conserving to make multiple test batches. I currently have some Comfort 4627 coming and will be testing these two FO's in parrafin for the first time.
