Tamiraem
a nieghbor here who burns candles claims she adds a touch of crisco to the batch of candles for better scent throw is this possible???????
Twoscentsworth
depends on what wax she is using. Lots of people add Crisco but it could cause smoking....another one of those things you have to test, test and test some more.
savedbygrace06
I have heard this as well but I wouldn't know how much Crisco to add to your candles. Like twocentsworth said ... it's all a matter of testing, testing, testing. I wonder if you could add it to soy wax? I'm sure it wouldn't make much of a difference since they are both veggie waxes, right?
Freezin
There has been quit a few discussions about this in the past on the board. If you do a search in the old forum you will get a lot of information. Some people seem to think it really helps, but other don't.
Candle Man
Crisco is just soy with cottonseed in a different form than other waxes. You can mak a container candle with 100% crisco but I don't know how well it will burn or what the cold & hot throw would be. Liz D.
I use EZSoy (100% soy) and I add .5 oz pp of crisco to my wax. There are a couple advantages. First is the melt pool is improved. Much more even burning, more consistent pool, IMO. But the biggest reason I add crisco is for pouring. Even at 98, the wax doesn't get real slushy and start to set up at the end of the pour. I can pour very easily without having to rush and without my spigot getting clogged in the end. I didn't have to change my wicking either. HTH!Liz D. WYJen
I use Crisco in my tarts. 1-2 oz pp in 4794. I definitely get a better scent throw from the tarts with the crisco added than I do if I hadn't added anything.
DONNAMAC
I, too, have recently started using Crisco in my votives. I use 4794 and 6228. I love the difference it makes. Nice burn pool and better scent throw for me. I use 2 tbs per lb. I think this is the board that I read it on. it works great for me. ljbristow
Since Crisco has an unlisted ingrediant which imparts it's only unique smell/scent when heated, does it have any impact on the various scents used besides just improving the hot throw. ie. the slight aromoa of crisco (someone's cooking in the kicthen with Dina......). Liz D.
It has no odor in the cold wax or during burning. Liz D.
DONNAMAC
I agree with you Liz, I had not even thought about Crisco having its own scent, so just to be sure I burned a votive made with it last night and for sure, no crisco smell. SilverOrchid
Hmmm might have to try this and see how it works with my wax.. an ounce or 2 pp?

DONNAMAC
I use 2 tablespoons per lb. of wax. I love the results.
Patsy
I agree that there are benefits to adding Crisco, but I did not like that there is more sooting with it. And it can throw off some fragrances. You have to test.
Molly
Mineral oil works the same way Crisco does, with slightly less smoking. It still has more of a tendancy to smoke than plain wax, but less than with Crisco.
Candle Man
Mineral oil works the same way Crisco does, with slightly less smoking. It still has more of a tendency to smoke than plain wax, but less than with Crisco. If you use MO that will take the place of how much FO you can add. Say you normally add 1.5oz of FO / LB of wax and you want to add MO. If you add MO at 1/2 oz then you can only add 1oz of FO any more oil and it will sweat out of the wax. So you reduce the FO which reduces the throw.
Liz D.
I use 1 oz FO pp with my soy wax. It will hold 1.5 oz FO pp, so I am not near the max. I suppose if you are using the max amt of FO that your wax will hold, then the mineral oil or crisco would cut the FO a bit. But if you are using just .5 oz crisco or mineral oil per pound, the amount of FO cut would be very minimal. IMO, from what I've learned, less FO doesn't always necessarily mean less throw. I used to use 1.5 oz FO pp. I switched to 1 oz pp and do not notice a difference on most of the scents, as long as I cure the candles. I had several testers tell me the same thing. There are a couple FOs that I feel require more, though. In general, I prefer less FO because there's less sooting and also I am not comfortable with that high of a load, just incase I would mismeasure or my scale would be off, God Forbid.Interesting subject, though! Would like to hear what others think as well.Liz D.
kaitlyn c
What do you think about adding crisco in igi 4627 wax. Has anyone tried in a preblend?
snow
I just recently added crisco to J50. It made a prettier candle, less wet spots and better scent throw. I used 2tbls. pp. I didn't see any difference in the burn, still burned nice, no sooting or smoke.
