MsDammit
question is, how much is too much? I've cp'd using 1 oz per lb, but the scent just isn't strong enough for me. I've also tried 2oz per lb and was much happier with the results-I've used it and was great but i' just wondering if u use too much FO could it cause irritation? Scent Cellar
I use f/o in my soap at .7 oz ppo & it is plenty strong. Maybe you should look at using f/o from another company.
prairieannie
Yikes! If I used 2oz pp in my soap I wouldn't be able to stand making it. I don't use a full oz either, and my soap is very strongly scented. What company's scents are you using if you don't mind my asking?
MsDammit
Holy crap, my nose must not be working- I made a 3lb batch yesterday and used 5 oz of FO and I can barely smell it.:undecided Annie I've been using FO from Millcreek.
prairieannie
Oh Boy! I've never used those fragrances, but I haven't heard a single bad thing about them either, so I'm not sure what to say on that. Is it possible that you have "candle nose" or "soap nose" in this case? lol. Maybe you're immunie to certain scents and are just having trouble smelling them right now? Could you have someone else smell them for you to see if they think they are strong? If I used that much fragrance in soap, I'm not kidding, it would run us all out of the house. RobinInOR
Wow. If I used that much it would be oozing out all over the place. Even though soap is a wash off product, I think that much could be very irritating. Soap isn't like a candle, unless you're just using it as a room freshener. It's going to be a lot stronger in the shower - have you taken these to the shower yet and smelled them in hot water and steam? 2 oz per pound oils is 10%. Pretty strong for b&b. jwahlton
I agree with Robin. I would think you might have FO oozing out! I use anywhere from .5 to 1 oz PPO and have great smelling stuff!
SoapInTheCity
I love a product to smell alot too........I usually use .5 FO pp and it usually seems like enough. I guess it depends on how strong the FO is....I would use more if I didn't think it was a strong enough scent.
eugenia
You must be getting descentized. LOL. Just made that one up. Sounds like a severe case of soap nose.
mountainmadness
I think that it may be your FO. I have never used more than .5 oz. per lb. of oils. With some EO I use as little as .2 oz. per lb. 90% of my FO come from Brambleberry.I have never had an issue with the soap loosing its scent. Scented
I'm all about smell and color too, but I'm pretty happy with the .7-1 oz usage.
MsDammit
Arghhh- I must be a freak with a broken sniffer.
Marisa
NO your not a freak:D SOme FO's just dont hold up well in Cp no matter how much you put in.For instance most peaches, Coconuts I had tried you can barely smell them then next morning. So I think it just may be the FO.
Scented
Now that could be. Can't some FOs fade and come back in a couple of weeks?
TexasBrat
I use .5 oz per pound. I like to make 2lb batches b/c I get to use a lot of 1 oz samples that way.
smart tart
I have soaped several of the Old Mill Fragrances - I find they are very very light! Off the top of my head I have soaped Baton Rouge, Bacca de Miel and Blackberry Vienesse Latte and found each of them to be light on the fragrance. I certainly wouldn't go up to 2 oz pp, jeez - way too expensive but use them in other applications......
maryann
I'm w/ you MsDammit I like a strong smelling bar and use between .7 up to 1oz pp.I luv MC's FO BUT for the most part IMO they aren't for soaps (I've learned that through experience). Soy candles, Lotions, whip butter, sprays, scrubs etc YES. I've starting using FO's from places that are for soaps and have better luck. I like A Scent Shop, RE, Oregon Trails, and NG's soap FOs. I'm sure others who are more experienced can give you more sources.
MsDammit
ok i feel a little more "normal", lol. Most of them have been fruity FO's-coconut included. I only did the 2oz per lb just on one batch-mostly out of aggrevation-cuz you're right that is too expensive dammit!

Scent Cellar
I buy most of my f/o for soaping from companies that test & specialize in B&B products. I don't like to waste my oils/butters on a f/o that maybe will work ... and maybe not.
Scented
Maryann, the flashpoints don't mean anything once they're in an application. The flashpoint is simply a number at which the FO will ignite on its own.
maryann
wow I feel like a fool (not really though as I'm still learning too). I will change the statement above so I don't lead anyone astray.Scented why do manufacturers say to add the FO at a certain temp?? I know that answer as far as bonding w/ the wax, BUT I've read that if you add it at too high a temp that it will burn off. So that statement isn't true??:tiptoe: off to change my statement above!! Shani
Myself and my customers enjoy a strong smelling soap, so with that being said, I add no less than 1oz ppo...
