Quentin
Is there a general rule as to what the interior temperature of a paraffin candle should be when you do your second pour? I use a slender meat thermometer when I start to make my first probe.
grama
I don't use a thermometer to test how cool mine are. When they are cold top, bottom, & side then they are ready for topping. I heat my top off hotter than original pour.
Jcandleattic
I also don't take temps. When a skin has formed and starts to sink in a 1/4" or more, that's when I poke my relief holes, and repour. I also repour hotter. You don't want your pillar so cool it starts pulling away from the sides before your repour, or the new melted was can get in between the mold and candle, causing ugly streaks, and making it harder to unmold.
grama
If making a pilar I do same as Jcandleattic. My above post was referring to jars.

Both of you answered some questions that I was unsure of regarding temp of re-pour and when to do it. I wasn't sure about whether or not to make the re-pour hotter or cooler. Now I know. I was also unsure of what to do when the first pour has cooled and pulled away from the walls of the mold. Many times I've done the 2nd pour and when I take them out of the mold there is a little rim of wax around the bottom. It's impossible to repair. Flicker
If your wax pulls away, I do my repours before they are totally cool. In pillars I do them actually more than once, and keep doing them as the candle cools, poking relief holes each time. If the wax adheres, I wait till they are cool and repour at once.
Quentin
Thanks Flicker. Very interesting. I'm going to print off this whole topic and put it in my notebook.

If I did the original pour at 180 then my top-off will be heated to 185....(this is using paraffin)
