Newbie from Joplin

Hi all, I'm so excited to have found this forum. Everyone here seems so pleasant. What a lovely group.

What's your name? Mary

How old are you? 43

Where do you live? Just moved to Joplin, MO from my hometown Austin, TX.

How long have you been making candles/soap/whatever? I've never made a candle before, but I'm here looking to learn. :)

How did you get started making candles/soap/whatever? It's something I've wanted to do for a while, and I'm ready to take the plunge.

Are you married? Any kids? Not married. My only child is my perfect little Havanese, Minka. (see pic)❤️

If candle/Soap making isn't your primary job, what do you do? I'm starting a small plant nursery and would love to make candles to sell as well.

Anything else we should know? I'm researching waxes, so I read NickS's post with great interest. The 4627 wax looks amazing, because I hope to make quality scented container candles. I'm not really interested in dyes right now. This is a total noob question, but if the 4627 wax is so soft, would there be problems shipping the candles later, after they're poured? Esp. in the summer months. Or does heating and pouring solidify the wax so melting isn't a concern? I don't mind getting messy with wax, but maybe this isn't the best wax to start with? Any advice on where I should begin?

Thank you!

Hi Mary and welcome to the board! Also, hello to a fellow Texan! I know you're living in Missouri right now but you're a Texas girl by birth LOL!

You'll get a lot of help from people on this board. Everyone is very willing to help each other out.

I personally don't make candles (or not very many) but I think shipping in hot weather is a concern. I know my tarts will melt if the wax is too soft and they're sitting outside. This is based on craft shows I've done in the past where I had made clamshells and they were mixed using a container wax with a pillar wax and would have a higher melt point than just container was alone. I'm sure someone that ships container candles will chime in and give you some advice on how to ship those in warmer months to keep them from melting.

Again, welcome and welcome to your new addiction!

Your dog is just precious by the way! I work with a woman that sells Havanese puppies. They're adorable!

Thank you, Belinda! Yep, a fellow Texan, for sure. Lived there most of my life apart from some time in NYC and the midwest. I love Austin, but oh, the heat!

Speaking of heat: Ok, good to know about the potential for wax melting. I'm putting the cart before the horse, I know, wondering about shipping candles when I've never even made one. But I don't want to invest time and money in a wax that is going to melt even at a craft show. Yikes! Thank you for this insight.

Havanese are just the sweetest dogs. I got mine from Austin Dog Rescue. She and her sisters were found in a Dumpster outside an apartment complex in Seguin, TX. But happily all three found safety and loving homes. And I've definitely found "my breed" from here on out!

Thanks again for the feedback!
