Wow! Have you read this?
PurpleHippie replied to Debra Phelps's topic in General Candle Making Discussions
You know what I find odd is that I have seen some very high priced "designer" type candles that didn't have the weight any where on the product package or labels. Think they would know all of the rules.:undecided -
I think it burns fairly well. A little mushrooming doesn't bother me if I get a good throw and MP. I was actually surprised at how well this burned!

Is paraffin really toxic?
PurpleHippie replied to Debra Phelps's topic in General Candle Making Discussions
Soy vs. paraffin has been discussed soooooo many times here on the board. Some VERY heated conversations at that! There is a lot of information on past post using the search if you would like to research it. -
Your reaction to this comment about 6006?
PurpleHippie replied to Judy, USMC's topic in General Candle Making Discussions
Ok, just making sure here...she did say that she tells them "soy BLEND" or "paraffin BLEND" not strickly soy or strickly paraffin? I agree if she was telling people the wax is only soy or only paraffin that would be wrong but that isn't the case or is it? -
Cinnamon on the tops of candles?
PurpleHippie replied to Violetsexoticcandles's topic in General Candle Making Discussions
Even if it is sprinkle away from the wick won't it reach the wick once it reaches a full melt pool? Couldn't the cinnamon possibly clog the wick? -

It sounds to me like that is a true statement. The statement has "blend" not that it is strickly soy or strickly paraffin. Now if the customer ask how much of the wax is one or the other and this person lied about it that would be different. I try not to focus on what others say to sell their products. There are a lot of marketing phrases I don't care for and won't use. There are also many tactics people use to make a sale that I don't care for either. However, if it doesn't concern my products I just ignore it. It's tough enough to just keep up with what I have to do. :undecided -
I Would Really Love Help From Anyone!

YES, it is much more costly to make then to purchase. Many of us have commented on "New to candles" type post concerning the cost versus just purchasing. -
Newbie question about wickless candles...
PurpleHippie replied to sunnie's topic in Vegetable Wax & Beeswax Candle Making
Good information to know! So when we purchase glass from candle making suppliers should we look for glass that is ASTM approved? Meaning, I have never seen a notation on any supplier site stating their glass is ASTM approved for candle use. Seems like that should be a very important issue. I am sure most of us just assumed what we are purchasing is safe. The store that sells my wickless doesn't want tin so I'll have to look into the glass ratings further. -

If we are using glass that is sold for candle use then shouldn't the glass be ok for a warmer? -
Newbie question about wickless candles...
PurpleHippie replied to sunnie's topic in Vegetable Wax & Beeswax Candle Making
That's a good point, and one I had not considered. I have always used glass for wickless and have not had any problems. I used tins breifly but they tended to rust with certain FO's. However, how do we know what various warmers will heat our container temperature to? I think that would also apply to candles that someone decides to use on a warmer. Maybe the company that made the candle never intended or tested it for use with a candle warmer. -
Newbie asking questions
PurpleHippie replied to Babyv's topic in Vegetable Wax & Beeswax Candle Making
How wide is your jar? A full melt pool in 1 hour is pretty fast. Normally we aim for 1 inch of melted wax per hour. So if you have a 3 inch wide container you try to wick so that in 3 hours you have a full melt pool. I put my lids on after the jars have cooled and allow them to cure with the lids on. There is a lot of information concerning curing if you use the search feature. I like to wait at least 1 -2 weeks for scent throw testing. That's strickly MY preference, others wait only 48 hours. Hope that helps and maybe someone else can address your bubble problem. I see Vickey posted about the bubbles as I was typing! -
I have the one from MC and IMO it smells mostly like orange. I could only slightly smell anything chilli or pepper about it. I've tried another one but I can't remember which supplier it was. It also didn't have much of a chilli/pepper scent.

another newbie seeking advice
PurpleHippie replied to rekarns34613's topic in General Candle Making Discussions
Here is are a couple of post I located using the search that might be of some help to you. http://www.candletech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57169&highlight=candle+business http://www.candletech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=54379&highlight=starting+business http://www.candletech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50789&highlight=starting+business You are going to get a lot different responses here and with what has been posted on previous topics covering candles as a business if you read the post using the search. However, I would just like to suggest that you really look into the market for candles in your area. Yes, many state that you can always find a niche but if your area is over crowded it can make it more difficult. Good luck to you. -
Here is one post I pulled up using the search where they were covered but there are more. I've used them but they produce much more soot than other wicks I have tested after the candle burns past the middle of the jar. http://www.candletech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55915&highlight=RRD

I have both of these FO's and to me they smell almost identical. If I would have known that I wouldn't have ordered both. I got this and the Granma's Kicken Pie(pecan I think). Boy does that one stink! It smells like soap and not a nice fragrant soap at that.! Nothing pie about it at all.

I was not a fan of NG in my soy but I think a lot of it will depend on the wax, wick, FO combo. I haven't tried their oils in paraffin. Start with some samples you may like them!

Soy essential oil loading

I also got a fuel smell with straight Lavender and mint. I was a bit surprised that I also got a fuel smell with Eucalyptus. Never could get the wicking right with Patchouli. -
If you type in Glass Glow in the search box you will get a ton of information:) It can be a PIA to wick but wicking is never easy anyway!

After I quit burning it I could still smell it and others commented that it was nice and not just the typical thick spice scent you get from most pumpkin candles. I really like it and would have to say it's my favorite pumpkin that I have tested so far. However, some people do like that heavy spice scent so I think I might make a spicy one as well. I am usualy the first if not the only one to pick up on something odd in an FO and I really don't with the one from CS. Funny how all sniffers are different:) !

It was mentioned on another post in a different thread but be careful when using EO's. Some turn into a great big fireball if used in a candle, they aren't suited for use near a flame. If using on the body some have health warning for certain medical conditions. Good site, glad you posted the link!

Anyone tried these jars ?

Are they larger enough to cover the base of your warmer? -
Soy essential oil loading
PurpleHippie replied to topofmurrayhill's topic in Vegetable Wax & Beeswax Candle Making
I am a bit surprised to read you are using soy! Good to hear you are pleased with it so far. When I tried this I had frosting issues that I just didn't want to deal with any longer. Plus the constant changes to the wax were just to much for me. In my experience the RRD wicks do mushroom and many times I had black soot as they burned further down. This happened with 5% load and FO tested from several suppliers. Switch to another wick and if properly burned there was no soot. So I determined that it was the RRD causing the problem. However, with wicks as with wax I find it is always a trade off. I have yet to find one that I thought was perfect. Picking between the lesser of the two evils.:smiley2: The HTP was the wick I ended up using. With EO the problem I had was that not all EO's smell good burning. Some IMO have a horrible smell, down right stink when burned. I tested 5-8%. Depending on the EO it can get costly. I know what George is refering to! When I was experimenting with soy and EO I had a request from someone that said she just pours orange EO right into the center of a melt pool as close to the flame as possible. She said it made the best smelling candle. That didn't sit well with me in the first place but I am glad I did some research and learned more about orange EO! Fireball indeed!!! Which EO's are you testing? -
I am burning one from CS right now and I do not smell anything burnt. I used only 6% in a soy paraffin blend. I really smell something creamy, and not overly spice.
