  1. Zinc vs. Low Smoke Zinc? Is there a difference? Eve
  2. That's great...I'm gonna get one...it's true those little tart molds get hottttt. Thanks Eve
  3. I had this idea. Does it sound good? I have these 3 oz pyrex containers (1.5 diameter and appx 2" high). I will weigh appx 2 oz wax and put in container. Then I will put the containers in pot of shallow water and melt the wax. I will then weigh out appx .15 oz fo and add(7.5%). I have a small latte mixer that I plan on using to mix in the oil (since the containers are small- 1.5 in diameter). I will then securely place in my low smoke zinc (votive size) wick. Cure for one week and then test in a small bathroom to check throw. BTW- I use 4627-does this wax require one week cure time? Why do candles need to be cured? Now, if I get no throw. Did I understand you right when you say you switch out the wick? Do you actually remove it from the candle and slide in another wick? or do you remelt the wax, take out the wick and put another one in (say rrd or eco, for example). If so would you then cure for another week? Sorry so many questions but I really do want to understand. Now can I assume that if the small low smoke zinc works with a certain fo, that a larger one in a larger jar is a very strong possibility for a good throw (once the right size is figured out)? TIA Eve
  4. I know what the Tony description says but my nose seems to smell citrus, woods and vetiver? How about you? I don't smell anything soft like lavendar or jasmine? Eve
  5. Junkie....a fo junkie, that is. I know you all keep telling me I need to decrease my fo%. So, I took the plunge, so to speak, and I've lowered to 10%. I am still having some throw issues with some oils. I use 4627, 2.75" diameter salsa jars (6 oz). The wicks that I have used are low smoke zinc 44-32-18, Eco 8 and RRD 47. I know that I may have "plunge" even lower, say 8% or (G*d help me) 6%. Now, it occurs to me, that with 50 different oils, and various wick types, that this is a lot of wax and a lot of candles. So, I am wondering is there a method for this type of intense testing....Like, for example making small candles with approp sized wick at various % fo, and then say, removing/replacing wick, if throw is not satisfactory? Or do I just have to toss the whole candle and start over? And is it safe to expect that if, for example, a small rrd threw the best in a small candle with a certain fo, that it will be the larger rrd (in the larger jar) that will do the trick? Also, why is "curing" necessary? I did notice that with one of my candles (Black Vetyver Cafe) that didn't throw when I first made, after a few months passed it did throw. I guess it cured? Or maybe I had "candle nose" at the time? I would love to know the science behind this? Sorry for the long question, but dammit, I want to figure this out. Eve
  6. I think that I may try Tony's Jo Malone in combo with tart grapefruit from wsp, maybe 50/50. I am hoping that I "make" the Jo Malone grapefruit scent. What do you think Texas Dean? Does that sound right to you? Eve
  7. Mind you, when I pour my candles I only do about 4 (6 oz jars) at a time. I try to have an extra ounce or so. After I pour the four candles I pour the extra ounce into a tart mold. When the candles cool, if they have any sink holes or indents, I use what I've set aside in the tart mold. I warm the metal mold on the hot plate of my coffee maker and once the wax is melted, I top of my candles. This little ounce of wax is usually all I need. And this frees up my double boiler, so that I can go on to my next batch of scent. Eve
  8. Intoxicating florals makes me think.... Tony's Red Currant (Votivo Type) WSP Nantucket Briar, Tuberose FOH Amber Blush, Moonlight Path AH/RE Seventh Heaven, Moonlight Path Candlescience Honeysuckle Jasmine Most people who smell candles/tarts made of these scents love them---whether or not they are "floral" people. Eve
  9. The one's I loved best from Tonys were Jo Malone Type Honeysuckle Grapefruit Oakmoss Eve
  10. I have gotten some nice oils from them. My favorites are: Mango Sorbetto Vanilla Romance Pink Grapefruit Tuberose Peony Vetyver Nantucket Briar Eve
  11. I finally made it thru 18 of my twenty oils that I bought during the 4 oz. Sale. First, let me say that all of the oils had phenomenal throw. I made tarts with IGI 4786 at 10%. On most ocassions, I was able to reuse the tarts 3 or 4 times. And two tarts did my very large LR, DR and Kitchen area. Only needed one tart for large bedroom. Now, my take on the scents: Angel Food Cake- just like the cake, some felt they smelled a bit almond Avalanche- I only smelled peppermint Cashmere Lace- a soft citrus smell, powdery and grapefruity at same time Celtic MoonSpice- vanilla and cinnamon, reminded me of food more than potpourri Oakmoss Sage- a clean, yet musk type smell Just Peachy- the best peach that I've ever smelled, true to fruit, no chemical Almost Paradise- Phenomenal Coconut milk and peach, like a day at beach Bird of Paradise- I think I smelled grape Choc Nut Brownie- choc brownie Interlude- phenomenal, Angel (T Mugler) users told me dead on dupe Moonlight Path BBW - A perfect dupe, beautiful - people love this Country clothesline- like downey, I think Hot Apple Pie- Beautiful Apple Cinnamon, reminded me more of potpourri than food type smell. Everyone loves this 7th Heaven- Wonderful- By far my favorite oil- reminded me of Blck Vetiver Cafe Strw Rhubarb- Reminded me of straw incense with a kick, i love it, people love this Twigs n Berries- woodsy and fruity, people loved this Watermelon- Beautiful, true to fruit, no chemical smell, great for summer Vanilla Wafer- havent done this one yet. Little Black Dress- Perfumey, nice smell. White Jasmine- beautiful, true to jasmine smell. The ones I loved the most were: Interlude (Angel) 7th Heaven Strw Rhubarb Pie Just Peachy Almost Paradise Moonlight Path Hot Apple Pie Twigs n Berries Just Peachy I will buy these in large size in the future. Just my opinions Eve
  12. I have Fig and Cassis from Wholesale Supplies Plus...it is strong and throws well. Eve
  13. On this topic, I was wondering.... There is a particular scent I like...Black Vetyver Cafe...but it is subtle and my 6 oz didn't fill a room. If I were to make this in a large 32 oz, 3 wick candle, would it? Has anyone made this scent in a large candle...love to know results TIA Eve
  14. I contacted candlescience and asked if they were going to have another sample sale...they said yes....end of summer beginning of fall..... there are certainly alot of new ones to try!.... Please post after you have burned palm tree... thanks ps...are there any other "must haves" that you love from candlescience....thanks eve
  15. Ok...I hear what you are saying. But how come, the sucking up of fo and bad burning/poor scent throw only happens with certain oils. I know that I am able to get a good throw (4627 @ 12%) with various vanillas (which are know to be problematic) and numerous other oils. I do hear you and I will reduce fo to 8% and see if I get a better burn/throw with moonlight path thanks eve
  16. I see that candlescience has a lot of new oils. I dropped them an email, asking if they plan on doing another $1 sample sale. Has anyone used these new oils? Would love to hear your take on them. Antique Sandalwood Apple and Clover Golden Rose Himalayan Bamboo Palm Tree Eve
  17. I am just adding fo (moonlight path, in this case) and color. I think it must be a reaction between this particular fo and the wick/heat/melt pool bec as I said, using a scoop of the same 4627 with 12% fo, only in a tart warmer produced wonderful scent throw. Also, many fo have awesome scent throw in this wax at the 12% with any wick (eco, rrd and low smoke zincs). Do you find that some oils just don't do well in candles (as opposed to tarts)? Or will it eventually do well, if I find the right wick? Sorry for so many questions, but I am perplexed. TIA Eve
  18. Sorry but here I go again. I make my candles with igi 4627, 12% fo (moonlight path bbw type), eco 8 wick in a 3" jar. Scent throw was weak. To test the wax/oil combo itselt, I scooped out a bit of wax and put it in tart warmer (tealight type) and scent throw was fabulous. I decided to test the temp of the melt pool of candle/wick vs. tart warmer, and the temps were 125 and 175, respectively. What do you make of this? Is it that melt pool isn't getting hot enough to disperse certain oils (because others are fine with the igi4627/eco 8 combo). Urgh... Eve
  19. Ok...I'm just playing Devil's Advocate but,....I have a cousin who pays $12 for bottled water (Pelligrino?) when we go out....if people are dumb enough... Hell, I've paid $75 (with tax a delivery) for a 6 oz. Jo Malone Candle..... He/She knows...there's a sucker born every minute. Eve
  20. I like it strong, too. I am rarely offended by any particular scent. thats just me, eve
  21. Wow, what a great article. Congrats to you. It is wonderful to see how you beam in that photo Eve
  22. I found all of their oils to be very strong throwers in igi 4627...so it really just comes down to scent preference. I loved: Frankinsece and Mhyrr-it smells like shalimar Hansel and Gretels House-a wonderful bakery scent-cinn, van, grahm, syrup Honeysuckle Jasmine-A great combo; reminds me of Jo Malone Honeysk/Jasm Cucumber Melon-reminded me of the old Victoria Secret version Mediteranean Fig-nice, clean fig Banana Nut Bread-smells like a muffin The prices are awesome, the scent throw amazing, the shipping is quick and there are no hidden handling fees. PS-I also love their wick guide. Because of it, I have tried ECO wicks and RRD's and I must say what nice clean burning wicks; they make a beautiful flame and don't soot up my glass until the very end (last 1/4 oz wax). HTH Eve
  23. I have used foh and it is awesome throw in tarts done at 10%. Many people love the cold throw when they smell it in a jar. It has a great clean smell, not overly minty. eve
  24. I read a post somewhere on this board where someone who uses igi 4627 said that they peel the bag down around the whole block and then they slice thru with a knife. I started doing this and I have to say it is a lot neater; it really works. Then when you are done with the wax, scoot the back back up. Cut off any extra plastic bag...Hope it works for you as well as it has for me. Eve
