  1. Candlescience has rolls of ECO .5 and 1.0 on clearance right now. I bought some and tested the .5 and I think that might be small enough for a tealight.
  2. I have ordered from them. I really like the USPS shipping. Shipping was prompt and service good. I only bought a couple of FOs. I really like the Orange Blossom (this one throws very well) and may have to break down and buy more. Pineapple Upside Down Cake smells really nice and threw well in my tarts but not in my candles. I would also like to hear more opinions on this company's FOs.
  3. It also seems like some of us notice it more than others. My friend thought a certain scent was soapy and I didn't notice it. Hm.
  4. Thank you both. Oddly enough, I am allergic to the scents they use in commercial soaps. That is the "soapy" smell I am referring to. It isn't a specific scent, just the overall thing that overwhelms you in the detergent aisle at the supermarket. dnj knows what I mean. It is weird.
  5. I'm comparing Orange Blossom FO from different suppliers. I like the Cierra version. The one from Peaks smelled like soap to me. I can't put my finger on that scent, but I don't like it. What are your thoughts on that? TIA
  6. The bill requiring people who purchased over $600.00 of goods to issue a 1099 to the seller, has been repealed. http://www.farmdocdaily.illinois.edu/2011/04/congress_repeals_recent_legisl.html This was tucked into the Health Care Bill. The Bill regarding reporting credit card sales over 20000.00 to be reported is still in force and was actually put in place before this administration. Personally, if I have sales over 20,000.00 per year, I would be happy to pay the taxes! That's a lot of candles! Per Paypal: How will I know if IRC Section 6050W impacts me? PayPal will track the payment volume of your account(s) and if your payment volume exceeds both thresholds by receiving over $20,000 in gross payment volume AND over 200 payments in a calendar year. If your account(s) exceed both thresholds, PayPal will send Form 1099-K electronically or by mail for the 2011 tax year in early 2012. Here is an interesting read: http://www.foxbusiness.com/markets/2011/01/21/new-ugly-effect-tax-evasion/
  7. I'm thinking you may have to wick down a little, because the 4oz jars are tapered and the 8oz are not. Wick for the bottom of the jar.
  8. None here in Florida either. I have to keep my wax and FO in the living room so it doesn't spoil out in the shed or garage.
  9. And don't forget you need to climate control your storage or your oils can be damaged by heat or freezing. Or you could get wax soup!
  10. You appear to live in a hot climate. I find air conditioning really skews the distribution of the scent. Do you have another place to test your tarts where the scent isn't blown away?
  11. Not a straight Mango, but Peak's Mango-Papaya is very good and strong.
  12. Since you are in Colorado, why not contact the good folks at Peak's and ask them what sells best in your state? I favor go with what you like but they can give you the low-down, I'll bet. Try 4630 Harmony Blend, much like the comfort blend but not quite that soft. Peak's has sample sizes of their waxes.
  13. Almost everything from Peak's is good. Mango Papaya, Rose Bouquet, Jamaica Me Crazy, Spruce Christmas Tree, Clean Cotton, Cool Citrus Basil, French Vanilla, Grandma's Swinging Eggnog, Lemon Pound Cake, Coconut Lime Verbena, Lilac, Pina Colada, Sage & Lemongrass, Spiced Cranberry, and White Tea & Ginger are favorites of mine. The only one I specifically avoid is Hollyberry & Ivy, smells like cat pee.
  14. I contacted Peak's about this, and the best they could suggest was to buy 1000 wicks which comes in a box and not a bag, and so in theory would not be mashed over. That is not practical for me at this time. For now I'm retabbing but long term, I'll look for a wick to replace Peak's cottons.
  15. Except when the wicks are put in a flat bag and the tab bends over hard at the base. Then I have problems with Peak's cottons flopping over.
  16. Yes, I tried just straightening them out and even redipped with high melt point wax, but it didn't help. I don't have this problem with my other wicks like htp or lx, just the Peak's cottons.
  17. All really great tips. Also, if possible, try to make candles in a place separate from where you cook. If not possible, keep all family and pets away while you make candles. There is one old post up here from a person whose husband got sick after eating a sandwich that got FO on it. Also don't work with hot wax when you are too tired, you don't need a mess to clean up. Get a bottle of dye remover and a bottle of wax remover. Keep copious notes-record the wax, the scent, the percent of FO, the colors, the jar, how long you burned, how deep is the melt pool, how did it throw, how big is the mushroom, how much wax is hanging up, how tall or short is the flame. Be patient. I had one FO that it took me over a year to wick. You can help control your budget by buying samples of FO, samples of wicks, and samples of wax. I prefer to use companies that will ship via the Post Office as this saves me a lot on my small orders. Candlescience is one of my favorites because of this. You can also save on samples in the classified on this forum or even on eBay. Just make sure the FO samples are from companies that are still in business as many do not exist any more. Read as much in the old posts as you can, great stuff in there. Have fun and welcome to the madness.
  18. Paraffin isn't made out of dinosaurs. Crude oil is composed of plants that grew when dinosaurs were around. That is the only connection there!
  19. All wax has an original vegetable base including paraffin, where the vegetable base is millions of years old. Food for thought.
  20. It's a clever idea but looks like it might tip over easily.
  21. Technology can sometimes be horrible. I have worked on computers for many years but keep my important contacts in a Rolodex. Never trust a computer myself. Glad everything is resolved and you will buy again from Lonestar. They are a good company.
  22. I always have this problem with my cotton wicks from Peaks, when the bags get flattened out and the wick gets bent at the base in the bags. I have to cut off the tab and retab them where they are not bent. It is not an option for me to buy spooled wick and tab my own wicks since I would have to buy 4 lbs. of wick. However, I know you can buy small spools of eco wick and tab your own wicks with high-melt wax. You could try this before spending a lot of money on a custom order of wicks.
  23. Who is Daryn Flanders? I met Herb in Kentucky but never visited the Alabama location.
