  1. You can embed the photo into a hurricane shell and then fill the shell with container wax or maybe try using waterslide decal paper or rub on quotes, from the scrapbooking section at craft stores, to put on the outside of a hurricane shell. They have a lot of love quote ones. Or if you good at making something cute with scrapbooking stuff, put together a cute layout, you can then punch holes on each side and tie it around the hurricane candles shell with pretty ribbon or depending on what size shell you make, you can add stuff with on the outside with push pins, just cut them short...HTH!
  2. I'd scan that photo onto your computer first so you would have another copy in case you dont like the results. I wouldn't recommend coloring wax too dark with photo canes. Tried it and it kinda looked bad. One thing I do now is embed the photo in clear wax like normal. Then afterwards sponge paint a light color on the rest of the cane and blend it in towards the photo. Then spray a clear sealant on it. HTH!
  3. It's not in the same spot everytime, and sometimes it's not there but most times it is. It's unpredictable with every round mold. I'm thinking that maybe after awhile the molds start to get slightly mis-shapen and lose their perfectly round shape and this may be the cause. They all look fine though and sometimes they work great. I would just hate the idea of having to replace 18 molds. I've used a brand new mold though and it happened. I'm stumped!! I just poured 4 photo canes tonight for an order and three of them had it. Now I have to reprint the photos and repour Could a bad batch of wax contribute to this (1260) ?
  4. For some reason lately, on nearly all of my round hurricanes, I am getting this kinda crack or fingernail effect on the surface of the outer shell. It's only in one spot and only on the round sizes. I'm not doing anything different in additives, pouring/cooling, etc. It just keeps happening and I can't for the life of me figure out why or how to make it stop. Anyone else had this happen or have any suggestions? I can't keep repouring these in hopes that one may turn out. It's wasting a lot of time and money and driving me mad! TIA
  5. Does anyone know of anywhere that does custom sized metal mold inserts for making hurricanes? Or anywhere that has a variety of sizes like Pourette used to have? I'm sick of making them myself and they just don't last..
  6. I've never found any anywhere, looked forever. So I order the round labels from labels by the sheet and print them myself. Let me know if you do ever find any! :smiley2:
  7. Just switched waxes to use with my tarts and have a few testing questions. I'm using the tea light burners which I hate because the tarts burning temp varies due to the tea light, but they sell well so I'm sticking with them. Anyways, I've taken the temps of my tarts while burning and the vary from 183 degrees - 198 degrees. (Before I never exceeded 155 degrees). Is this temp dangerous? I'm using 1oz. pp of wax. Not sure how to figure in flashpoints and stuff when mixed with wax... Just wanting to get an idea on what others' temps are with their tarts.
  8. J223 would just be too much of a sticky mess getting them out of the mold and then getting them out of the melter when done. You can try to mix it with a pillar wax though. I use 25% container wax 75% pillar and its works perfectly.
  9. I've seen these at Michaels. But not anywhere online.
  10. Body oils? Did you test them, how did they burn? I don't think you are supposed to use those...If you said the craft store told you it was a premium blend, it was probably Yaley's wax. Good luck on your candlemaking journey. Be ready to spend a crapload of money and drive yourself mad with the testing process (please test your candles before selling them, you only get one chance to make a good first impression on customers)
  11. Wow, that is one of the most beautiful candles I've seen in awhile! You are very talented and thoughtful.
  12. That would be SO easy to make! Not sure if your handy or not but just find a piece of wood, shelf, whatever looks good and just partially drill out the holes with a small spade bit. Places like michaels have smaller pieces of wood for crafting, I bet you could find something nice there and paint or stain it. HTH!
  13. This place was going to accept me but I went with someone else locally http://www.auto-owners.com or you could try http://www.indiebeauty.com. I got turned down plenty of times for the same reason of making candles in a home. I know it's a risk but I've never had any incidents while making candles but I've had plenty of almost fires while cooking dinner! Good luck on finding coverage.
  14. Very cool! They look so real! I bet they smell wonderful!
  15. Thats pretty! I usually level mine first with a utility blade, that way you can get it just right. Then I quickly set it on a heated pan for a sec. just to give it a smooth finish.
  16. Oooh! That's pretty! I was thinking of trying that on a hurricane shell. Where did you get your dazzle dust? Have you ever seen it in craft stores?
  17. I use sheet metal that I get at Lowes or Home Depot and make my own custom sized inserts. I've made hearts and star inserts too with it. It's in the roofing section I think, costs $5.99 for a 10 ft. roll. Works wonders and they last a long time too. I use metal tape to secure it together. Just be sure to wear some heavy duty gloves when bending this stuff, it can cut you up!
  18. That seems a bit much to pay. If you know a little bit about creating your own site, you can do like me and go with bluevoda and use a mals shopping cart (free) and process your transactions through propay. I only pay $115/year for it all, plus use the propay at shows too. If you just put a little work into it and learn the basics of coding and web design, its very easy and much cheaper! Plus it's nice having total control of the website design and the ability to change things instantly whenever you want.
  19. I use propay but don't think I'd try this, mainly because of the price and if you didnt bring something to shows to print off a receipt and a copy for them to sign, then you'd have to write something up for them to sign anyway and you might as well just use the knucklebuster IMO. I like the carbon copy receipts. You always have signed proof.
  20. Thanks guys! I've decided to change everything named "hurricane" to "luminary" I never thought about how someone might be reminded of an actual hurricane and be turned off.
  21. I sell a large line of hurricane candles but have been going back & fourth lately on if I should change my webite, labels, brochures, etc. to refer to them as Luminaries or wax lanterns maybe. I get alot of people asking why I would call them hurricane candles. The other names do sound prettier too. What do all of you who make these refer to them as? Do you think customers would respond to them more if they were renamed? Any input would be appreciated, cause I just dont know..
