I am a stay at home mom that wants to venture into the candle business. As of right now, I have been testing different waxes and scents to find the best option for me. I would love to learn more and hopefully one day, teach someone what I know!

  1. Hmm...I guess that I am just worried because the consistancy is different that I am going to have to 'test' it with all of my scents and wicks all over again...
  2. Thanks Jaime! I appreciate your feedback! Could some other 4627 users tell me if their wax is more vasoline-like or harder? If that is the case, does anyone know the reason for the 4627 that I have been ordering this past year being so soft? Thanks! Allison
  3. Hi Everyone - I have been using 4627 for about a year now. I've been ordering it from the CandleMakers Store in Cinci, Ohio. Once the prices at Candle Science went down, I ordered from there because it was cheaper all around. There seems to be a pretty big difference between the stuff from The CandleMakers Store and Candle Science! Has anyone ever had this happen? The wax from Candle Science is harder than I am used to. It has been inside my house for over a month, so it isn't the cold outside. It is still messy, but the stuff from The CandleMakers Store is more like Vasoline and very easy to scoop...the stuff from Candle Science was difficult to scoop and even as a candle is harder, less finger prints if touched, etc. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks in advance - Allison
  4. Hi Everyone - I am curious to see if anyone else is having the same problem that I am with the 4627 - I've been using this wax for quite some time with great results. I have a number of chocolate scents (choc. milk, choc. fudge, biscotti, etc..) that I have been pouring and in this last month, no matter how long I stir, once the wax and FO have been poured and sit overnight, I see swirls on the top of the candle the next day...like the FO didn't blend. I am pouring into 3" diameter tumblers, 8% FO, heating to 200 degrees and pouring between 165 and 170. Any ideas or suggestions? I don't know if it is doing this because of the temperature change or what? It is pretty cold outdoors, but not in... Thanks in advance for your help! Allison
  5. Yeah, I guess that I have really good luck with the ECO's and the LX's when I keep the wick trimmed to 1/8-1/4 inch BUT...I know that when other people burn candles, they don't burn them with the same care that we all do. Does that make sense? Before I started making candles and before I learned a lot about them, I hardly ever paid much attention to trimming...so I figure that there are a lot of others that don't either. I just wish that there was a great wick out there that wouldn't soot if the wick didn't have the greatest attention paid to it! Okay - updates...I tried the CD10 and it began sooting once the wax had only about 3/4" left...I also tried the Hemp 1400 and I have to tell you, it didn't soot at all! Now, this is only with one scent so far but I was extremely surprised at this. It did mushroom but it didn't soot a bit - even at a 1/2 inch of wax. HTH's others that are thinking of trying other wicks! Allison
  6. The Cranberry Spice from Peaks is amazing. I've even had people e-mail after burning it to tell me how amazing it is! Allison
  7. I can't thank you all enough - I am going to sample one from each of your suggestions and see where that gets me! Thanks again! Allison:yay:
  8. Hi everyone! I posted a thread a couple of weeks ago looking for a great pumpkin pie type scent - in turn I received a BUNCH of wonderful suggestions! I was hoping that you all might have some suggestions for Sugar Cookie scents? I tried Candle Science's and although it smells wonderful, the hot throw really isn't anything to write home about. I have also tried Holiday Cookies from Indiana Candle Supply and it smells good and is strong, although it doesn't have the smell that I was hoping for...I liked the strong vanilla-ish smell that CS's FO had. I also tried Peak's Sugar Cookie FO but it smelled just like ICS's. I appreciate any suggestions that you may have!!! Allison
  9. Okay - when people say that 4627 is a booger to wick, they are kidding...actually, that is an understatement if you ask me! I am testing this wax in an 11oz tumbler - 3" in diameter and about 3.5" tall. I typically use between 8 and 10% FO. I've tested with RRD 47, HTP83, LX20, ECO8's and zincs. The only one that doesn't soot or smoke is the zincs BUT - they burn too hot. I have tried the 44-32-18's, the 44-24-18's and the 36-24-18's. Both 44's burn out to the edge but the glass gets so hot that I am afraid that someone would drop the candle if they tried to pick it up (scent throw was amazing though!). The 36 also burned to the edge although the scent throw wasn't all that great and the flame was so wimpy and pitiful that you just felt bad for the poor candle. I just ordered some CD10s and some Hemp1400's - does anyone have opinions on these two wicks? All of the other wicks that I have tested have had a good melt pool and good scent throw, although the smoking REALLY bothered me and the soot on the side of the container got to me as well. If the container is less than half full - will you almost always have some soot? Thank you in advance for an information, tips or advice that you may have - as well as opinions on the Hemps and the CD's! Allison:grin2:
  10. Thank you to everyone who suggested these pumpkin scents! I really do appreciate it. I don't really like too many bakery scents so it is nice to hear what smells good to people that do. I have ordered a few samples from everyone's suggestions and am anxious to test a few when I receive them this week! Thanks again! Allison
  11. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions...I am anxious to get this ball rolling! Allison
  12. Hi Everyone! I've been testing seasonal scents and recently tried Pumpkin Pie from CS...it smells beautiful although I don't find it to be very strong. Can anyone recommend a strong Pumpkin Pie scent to me? I am willing to shop anywhere for the right one! Thank you all in advance! Allison
  13. Hi Everyone - I have a question regarding melting candles down. I have been testing different wicks and I happened to make about five candles with ECO wicks and they smoke really bad - so, I was wondering if it is possible to melt it down and pour it in another container with another wick...I mean, I know that it can be done - but - would it lose some of the scent quality when burned with the new wick? They will just be testers for me to burn at home but I didn't want them to not be as strong as they were before. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions! Allison
  14. Oh...and the problem seems to be that I am making the candles in my home...
