  1. Very nice, Dan! I used to make alot of pyramids myself but almost went crazy trying to find a wick that worked. I would always either end up with excessive dripping or a 6 foot high flame. Do you mind if I ask which wick you used? :smiley2:
  2. I'll try a smaller wick and see how we go. Thanks, Vicki! :smiley2:
  3. I've been making candles for a few years (just for personal use/friends and family), so I'm not really new to candlemaking - but this is something that I have absolutely no idea about. What does it mean when the flame flickers as though it's sitting in a draught? Just in case it was, I moved it to different areas, but still the flickering. I'm using 4045H, 1 TB pp of stearic, 1 oz pp of FO and ECO 12 wick. The melt pool and hot throw are amazing, as is the flame height. If it wasn't for the flickering, the candle would be perfect! If anybody has any ideas, I will be forever grateful! TIA! :smiley2:
  4. Hi Antonia, Bitter Creek has one. I've only just discovered it myself, so I'm not sure how good/helpful/friendly it is... http://boards.bittercreek.com/tool/mb/bittercreek :smiley2:
  5. Me too! And maybe one day, mine will look as spectacular as yours! Thanks for sharing, Rae. :smiley2:
  6. I've seen your chunk candles Rae, and they're absolutely gorgeous. Do you mind if I ask which wax you use for the overpour? If it's a trade secret, I certainly understand! :smiley2:
  7. Just as I thought... scenting the overpour it is! I was using FO for both the chunks AND the overpour, but liked the more translucent look the unscented overpour gave. I'll try pouring hotter and using a heat gun while the candle is still in the mold. Thanks for that tip Karen! :smiley2: ROF - I use an electric griddle to level the bottoms. If I want the chunks to show through more, I put a paper towel on the griddle plate and roll the candle along it until some of the overpour melts off. Messy job, but gives pretty good results.
  8. Do you scent the chunks or the overpour wax? Or both? 4045H is much more translucent for the overpour when unscented, but cold throw is almost non-existent when only the chunks are scented. If I do add FO to the overpour, it sometimes mottles and becomes more opaque. I usually remedy this by rolling it back and forth along the griddle to melt off some of the overpour and show the chunks more... but I think I'm also losing some of the scent when I do this. Just curious to see what most of you do! TIA! :smiley2:
  9. How creative! They're gorgeous and your mom and sisters are going to love them!
  10. I've been having exactly the same problem lately. Unfortunately, the fuel smell wasn't discovered until after I'd made a gazillion tealights and had them burning in every nook and cranny of the house. I was not at all popular. The word "divorce" was definitely mentioned once or twice... :embarasse Thanks for the vanilla tip, guys! :highfive:
  11. That's true. Although the baby oil I use seems to have an incredibly strong scent, and smells as though it would be stronger than me mixing mineral oil and FO. :undecided Okay, that's it...I hate not testing things for myself, and now that I know that it's safe to burn, I'm going to have to make a candle with baby oil before the weekend's over!
  12. Rust?! INSIDE a brand new mold?! I've never had any problems with the metal molds from Peak's, One Stop Candle, Pourette (although not sure what's happening with them at the moment :undecided ), Yaley, and Candlescience. :smiley2:
  13. I thought it was too good to be true. If it was safe to burn, and had a decent scent throw, I guess there would be no need for all the baby powder and similar scents that are out there, and I would have heard about using baby oil before now. Oh well... I'll just stop being a cheapskate and buy the good stuff!
  14. Sorry to butt in guys, but now you have me curious Top... can baby oil (ie Johnson & Johnson) be used in pillars? With 4045H or 1274? As a fragrance? This would save me a small fortune in FO's for the baby shower candles I have coming up....
  15. Thanks Isbennis! And hey, even if it does have a hint of cinnamon... it IS only $1.25 for the 1 oz sample! I'm sure that won't break the bank too much! Then again... you have given me other ideas and choices too, now... :undecided
  16. Hi ChelleRie! I'm about to place an order with The Candlesource and will be ordering sample sizes of most of the ones you have mentioned... seems we have similar tastes! I am curious about Spiced Apple and Peaches though - the description says that it smells like "warm apple cider with light peach notes"... does it have any cinnamon smell to it? I love both apple and peach scents, but cannot STAND anything with cinnamon in it! :undecided TIA!
  17. I love Becky's oils, and have had pretty good luck with most of them (especially Chestnuts & Brown Sugar!), but a word of warning to those of you who like florals... the Magnolia FO will turn your wax bright YELLOW!!!
  18. You make no such thing, Donita! ALL your candles are exquisite!!!
  19. I've made about six bazillion chunk pillars in round molds using square and triangular chunks, and they've all looked pretty good... but it never occurred to me to make the chunks to fit the mold this way! Thanks for the great tip, Tony!
  20. Sabrina, they're beautiful! I especially like the first one, with the mixture of the two waxes. Great job!
  21. I'm sure Fiona will love it, Mozzie... it's gorgeous! All the stress and heartache and hard work has certainly paid off. Great job! :highfive:
  22. Rustic or not, Jade... I think they look amazing!! I especially like the aqua/turquoise one. I just "unveiled" a rustic tilted layer myself... and it looks wonderful! If I do say so myself! I'm not sure what the temperature was when I poured each layer... but it was beginning to congeal around the outside of my pouring pot. Pretty cold, I would think! I think the secret is the stearic - I used roughly 2 tblsp per pound. And pouring cold. I didn't chill my mold, but did use PAM. HTH!!
  23. You're so right, warmvanilla. I've never had the pleasure of meeting Geek, but (at the risk of sounding like a brown-nose ) Top seems to know the solution to just about every problem! His advice has helped me out on numerous occasions, and it looks like his knowledge and expertise has done the same for you. Your candles look wonderful! Great job!!
  24. Thanks AJ! The two sites I've been wanting to order from (JS and Snowtop) give rave reviews of their scents in soy, but not much mention of their ability in paraffin. Now I know it's worth giving them a try! Thanks again!
  25. I always look forward to seeing your candles, Judy. Everything you do is fantastic... and these are no exception. They're wonderful! Great job!
