  1. I've never used soy in my life, so I'm curious about the claim that "it throws well in soy, so it's absolutely fantastic in paraffin!" Is this always the case? If an FO has only been tested in soy and has a great throw, will it also have a great throw in paraffin? Alot of the FO suppliers that test in soy have this statement in their scent descriptions (good in soy and therefore out of this world in paraffin) so I was wondering just how much truth there is to it. :undecided TIA!
  2. Wow. I've been using Ziploc bags (actually, not even the Ziploc brand... the generic brand (Target) resealable ones :embarasse ) all this time, and had no idea that they were sucking the scent out of my candles. Thank you so much for the info guys! :smiley2:
  3. Thanks Homecomfort! I'm assuming polyethylene is the same as polypropylene? :undecided
  4. Thanks Portia! That's just what I needed to hear! Amazingly, there is no difference in the shipping cost from NC to Philly for a 10 lb slab of wax, even though Candlewic are only a half hour's drive from me!
  5. Those are gorgeous, Daria! I love the vividness of the orange and pink. Do you mind if I ask where you got your mold? I've been looking for a pyramid mold for a while now, and yours looks perfect!
  6. Just when I thought my credit card was safe... Thanks again!
  7. Thanks guys! Vicky, do you add stearic to the 1274? The 4045H doesn't come with instructions (and I'm assuming the 1274 doesn't either) but I've learned from this board to add 1 - 2 tblsps of stearic per pound to mottles to help with the "sweating".
  8. I had only ever heard that using too much vybar will lock up the scent. That's why I only use a little... but then throw in a little stearic as well! All that is about to change! One or the other, and not too much of either one. Got it!
  9. I had no idea that using both stearic and vybar at the same time would lock up the scent! I always use both together! And couldn't for the life of me work out why my candles didn't smell overly strong, no matter how much FO I used! :undecided Thanks Candle Man! Sorry to butt in Anjie, but this news is great! Good luck with your bunnies!
  10. I've been using 4045H from Candlewic for a couple of years now, but as most of my other supplies come from Candlescience, I was considering switching to their mottling wax. Have any of you had any experience with their IGI 1274 for mottles? Is it comparable to 4045H? I've done a search and found that the 1274 is great for rustics... but couldn't find anything about its mottling ability. TIA! :smiley2:
  11. These look wonderful! Great job Sally!! :highfive:
  12. I add 2 tblsps of stearic, 1 tsp of luster crystals and a 1/2 tsp of vybar to 1 lb of wax to make a very true white, without wick clogging problems. I use 4045H (mottling wax) though, so I'm not sure if these amounts may be a little excessive for your wax? :undecided
  13. Oh! I was right!! Wonders will never cease! Thanks IndyGirl!
  14. I would think it would be 1.14 oz... just over an ounce. But... that seems like alot for one candle? Hmmmmmm. I could be wrong. In fact, I probably am! Sorry Chantel! I hope somebody that knows what they're talking about can help! :undecided :smiley2:
  15. Thank you so much everybody! You've given me some great ideas, including the one of mixing Baby Powder with something else. A lot of you mentioned scents from Nature's Garden, which is great because that's exactly where I wanted to order from! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! :whoohoo:
  16. Exactly. That's why I'm having such a problem! :undecided I tried a couple of florals, but they didn't seem to go with the blue too well. But your idea of Vanilla is a wonderful one! I think that is one scent that almost everyone likes. Thanks Stacie!
  17. I am soooooooooooooooo sick to death of "baby powder"!! :lipsrseal I've also been using J & J Bedtime Bath (Soothing Lavender) from The Candle Source, which I love, but even that is now starting to get to me! Moonlight Path is another good one, but I was wondering what else would work for baby blue and white votives (chunks, mottles, rustics and layers)? Have any of you tried NG's Aromatherapy Relaxation? All ideas and recommendations greatly appreciated! :smiley2:
  18. That's exactly what I thought it was too, Top! What is it they say about "great minds"?! Regardless of who/what it's for, it's great AJ! Certainly puts my Pride pillars to shame!
  19. Me too!! For some reason though, I thought it was for a guy... :undecided In any case, great job, AJ!!
  20. Hi Jamie, One Stop Candle sells their wicking in small quantities for testing - http://www.onestopcandle.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=CSWICK Their shipping is incredibly fast, and their customer service is outstanding. Candlewic will also send you samples if you contact them. I received some of their LX series last week - http://www.candlewic.com/candle-wicks/default.asp HTH!
  21. Yet again Top, you have come to my rescue. I can always count on you and/or Donita to know exactly what to do! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise, and also for the link. I'm about to order a variety of the smaller wicks that One Stop Candle have. Candlewic are also sending me some other samples to try. Looks like I'll be able to give away draped layer pyramids at Christmas after all!
  22. I'm hoping (actually, praying!) that some of you experts can help me out. I'm having a nightmare of a time trying to find a suitable wick for a few molds that I have recently purchased from Candlewic. The main one I'm having problems with is a pyramid which is 9 inches long and 2.5 inches at the base. Using flat braid 27 ply and flat braid 21 ply (twisted) I get an ENORMOUS flame. I contacted Candlewic and they suggested using the LX series. I tried the samples they sent me, but I still got the same problem - a huge flame, with mushrooming. I then tried using zinc core wicking, but just ended up with dripping and a big mess. I even tried buying a taper candle and pulling out the wick to try that in my mold, assuming that a taper would have a smaller wick... STILL a huge flame! :embarasse I had a look on Candlewic's wick guide, and the wicks with the smallest flames seem to be the paper-core series. Have any of you used these wicks with these molds? I was planning on ordering a spool and going to pick up it up today, but just wanted to find out in advance if this would be the right wick to try. I use 4045H wax. Thank you! :smiley2:
  23. Thanks for the link, JL! Now I finally know how to make the gorgeous vertical stripe candles I see in Pier 1 and Crate and Barrel that I've been admiring for ages!
  24. Thanks Scented. I had a feeling it was the dye, but it seemed I could NOT make my wax red! No matter how much I put in, it was STILL pink! More black and much less red next time. Do you think bleach will work to get the color off without ruining the mold?
  25. I made five candles yesterday and after unmolding them today, discovered that every single one of the polycarbonate molds that I used is now stained with the color of the candle that was in it! I know that this won't affect the finish of the next candle I make... but it's a little disconcerting to pour what should be a white candle and have it appear to be setting up pink! I'm sure I'm not the only one that this has happened to - is it from using too much dye? Or too much FO? Or leaving in the mold for too long? Or all of the above? The only thing that I know didn't cause it was from pouring too hot, as they're all rustics. Any ideas on how to remove the color from the mold? I was thinking about bleach... but thought I'd better check with you experts before I go ruining my molds. TIA!
