1. Peak's Fireside would work well with grey.
2. Breanna - they are specially made for vegetable waxes.
3. Thanks Aileen for the Monave link. It looks like a great company with a lot of good products. I think I'll give them a try too.
4. I second what Laura said. A jar of Bare Minerals will last me 6-9 months, and it feels like you're not wearing any makeup at all. I could never go back to liquid foundation and that "cakey" feeling. Ick!
5. I just got a new Salter digital scale - measures to 0.05oz, stainless steel top, 11lb capacity - from Bed Bath & Beyond. With their 20% coupon they send all the time, it was only $40. I also got a new Pyrex digital thermometer with a probe and alarm for $19.99.
6. Green Leaf has a cherry vanilla. I don't have it, but have yet to find a scent of theirs that isn't fabulous.
7. I would suggest finding a very strong sea smell, like bladderwrack (Sweetcakes has this in their essential oils blends) and mixing it with a spice mixture FO that has clove in it. I think that's probably the closest you'll get!
8. Sweetgrass has a very unique fragrance. I use the FO from Sweetcakes in my soap.
9. I like natural colorants. I used to use oxides & ultramarines, but did not like the fake colors they gave to my soaps. I've gotten some really beautiful and vivid natural colors.
10. Indonesian Teak Magic of India Dogwood Gardenia Petals Black Currant Rainy Nights Antahala Vanilla They are all great!
11. Hey, that looks a lot like "Frank", my World's Biggest Mushroom from a few months back!
12. I just ordered a sample of Lotus Blossom FO from Scent It. I haven't smelled it before but it sounded very lovely.
13. I'd like to see in each issue a feature interview with a large candle company with their history, growing pains, sales volume, etc. Example companies: Votivo, Diptyque, Illume, etc. Thanks for this opportunity!
14. I placed an order with Scent It yesterday and got my shipping notice today, so their service must have improved. This is my first order with them, so can't speak for their oils yet.
15. To throw another option into the ring: I got the best results (smooth top, very tiny bit of frosting on the bottom, no wet spots) when I heated to 180, added FO, then poured at 170 and cooled very slowly in a warm oven. BURN UPDATE: I'm finding the ECO wicks are working very well. I'm getting a good throw and melt pool in my 3 1/2" hourglass jars.
16. Congratulations on the interest in your candles Fredericka! I'm also planning to sell to those fancy boutique stores, so I'll be very interested to see how this pans out for you!
17. That's great news! Thanks for sharing it.
18. I agree with everyone else...why charge "Made in Taiwan" prices for handmade works of art? It makes no sense to me at all.
19. Fire and Ice, every time I see your CT name I think of that song by Pat Benatar. Hopefully you are old enough to know who & what I'm talking about!
20. Who gets wealthy? Well, it wouldn't be the people actually making the candles. I've seen a pic of one someone had gotten and it was a perfectly abysmal looking candle. Since this is a pyramid scheme, it's all the "recruiters" who make the money.
21. Me too! I use them for 2lb test batches.
22. LOL at that!! :laugh2:Shame, shame on us all.
23. I've switched to ECO wicks for my soy waxes, because the LX's just didn't have the same scent throw for me, and were more prone to mushrooms.
24. I poured two candles last night, in 5oz hourglass jars, no dye. 24 hour results: 1. 8% FO, poured at 150. Frosting all along bottom. No wet spots, very flat top, great scent throw. 2. 8% FO, poured at 170. Tiny smidge of frosting on bottom (barely noticeable), no wet spots, very flat top except for minimal slight depression in one spot. Excellent scent throw. Will wait one more day to burn, but this looks very promising so far!
25. I've heard that if you add too much beeswax it can crack, and sometimes in containers you will see some hairline cracks going around the perimeter of the container (a heat gun will fix this). Haven't tried pillars or votives, so can't speak for those. P.S. I've only gotten the hairline cracks when using Cargill C-3, so it might be something in their blend.
