1. I've only tried two so far (Santa Fe Trail and Harvest), but they were both really good oils. Santa Fe Trail smells just like Sweetcakes' "Sage, Sweetgrass & Cedar" FO.
2. Same here! I noticed the biggest contributor to wet spots, for me, is having the room temp. too cold. DH likes it cold in the house, but now I won't let the thermostat get below 72*. It's helped a lot!!
3. Has anyone else noticed that Jason has added a 464 wax to his website? It's described as "Soy blended with a soy additive to achieve Smooth Tops and a Superior Hot and Cold Throw. Single Pour." Another question - has anyone tried this yet? Sounds intriguing...
4. You're welcome! According to GB website, the 449 is also a soy/cotton blend, so if you don't like the 435 you might want to try that as well. I grew up in Astoria, OR...always nice to see members from my home state on the board!
5. I have tested both the 435 and KY125 and in my experience they both behaved exactly the same. HTH
6. I have found those sniffies to be unreliable. I've gone ahead and ordered some of their FO's after getting the sniffies, and they are sooooo much better "in person" than in the sniffie bag.
7. I am planning to offer Greenleaf 70 soy/30 para as my primary wax, but am also going to offer Cargill C-3 as an all-veggie option. It takes a week to cure, but I can pour at 170* without frosting or rough tops. I am also happy with the scent throw from C-3. Out of the pure soys I've tried, I like Bluegrass soy the best. I have to pour at about 95*, but the tops come out very smooth with no frosting or wet spots. HTH
8. The only veggie wax blend I've tried that sets up smooth after burning is Cargill C-3. I've tried the GB 444, 435, and 449, KY125, MC soy, and Bluegrass soy.
9. Very, very impressive first batch! You definitely got the look you were going for. Nice job!
10. Yum, that color reminds me of creme brulee! I've ordered some LLC this week, can't wait to soap it myself!
11. It's 70% soy and 30% paraffin. It's the most beautiful wax I've ever seen! It's sold by Green Leaf candle supply. www.greenleafcandlesupply.com They have excellent customer service and really try to please everyone.
12. I am really pleased with the way this one turned out. It is CP scented with Cannellini Ricci (a very nice skin safe cinnamon) from The Scent Works and colored with red sandalwood powder. The chunks are black, white, and clear M&P. Thanks for looking!
13. It probably did get too hot, the wick was too big for the container I used. It was an ECO-8 in a 10oz hourglass jar and the melt pool was very deep. I'm going to pour some more this week and let you know if I still get the discoloration. Thanks for the follow up!
14. This greyish blue color also happened to me when I poured Maduro. I think it is just a reaction of the FO within the melted wax.
15. Thanks! No, the siggy pic is not Ling Ling. Here's my "pooh": Sorry to hijack!!
16. Hi Holly, I used this in Green Leaf's 70/30 soy blend and it throws wonderfully. It smells much better in wax (the anise comes out more) than OOB. I used it at 5%.
17. I had a sample of the Ginger Milk from FNWL and it was very strong in M&P soap. I really liked the fragrance, too. Don't know how it works in other applications, though.
18. I apologize...I interpreted the thread to mean you wanted to use either RBO or palm oil and nothing else. I just now noticed you were talking about base oil only. (And I would use RBO over palm as well). Sorry!
19. Thanks for the kind replies gals!! Maryann, what I did was melt some M&P in black, white, and clear, and drizzled each into the mold. Then I poured the CP on top of it. The heat from gel melted the M&P a bit and allowed it to adhere to the CP. The cedarwood mint doesn't smell like a hope chest at all. It is more minty than cedar-y. It's a very spa-like fragrance (and a Thymes dupe), like mint with a background of evergreen woods.
20. I remember too! It was back in '99 and I made a 12lb batch with essential oils, no color, in a tupperware storage container...I still think it was one of the best batches I ever made!
21. Guppy, one marketing idea I can think of is making an "old-fashioned" soap with tallow...like OMH with tallow...this would probably appeal to the country-lovin' folks.
22. I played with my stepping stone mold yesterday, trying to get a "marbled" effect with a combination of CP and M&P. DH thinks it looks like a shirt he used to own back in the 80's. What do y'all think? By the way, it was scented with SW Cedarwood Mint (FABULOUS scent!! And strong!!) and colored with stinging nettle powder, which is supposed to be good for oily skin. Close-up: Cut pics: (I did not do the marble throughout, as this soap traced very quickly)
23. IMO you cannot get a good bar of soap when using only one oil. It is a combination of different oils, all with different properties in the finished soap, which produce a well-balanced soap. One type of oil will not make a bar which is hard, moisturizing, and has a good lather all at the same time.
24. I've been working with tins a lot lately. I use them myself as I am a business traveler and can't stand not having a candle around. I've also been getting requests for them from my co-workers - I sold a few of them last week (my FIRST candle sales!!) I've also found them easier to wick than jars, and no worry about wet spots is definitely a plus.
25. Spellkast-was the water room temp or colder? The only think I can think of is the water was too hot...I use Roebic and my cans say 100% sodium hydroxide.
