tucker
OK. I'm making 12 votives. That's 24 oz. when finished, right? So I weigh out 24 oz. of wax. WRONG. I have to weigh out 30 oz. of wax so I have enough for re pour.HOW COME?????
Scent Cellar
1 lb of wax equals 20 oz when melted. 1 lb of soy equals 18 oz when melted.
Carrie
My first thought was to pour cooler. I've noticed that there is less shrinkage in my wax when I pour cooler.I always get 8 votives out of 1lb of wax.
pdevine
So do you add FO according to the hard wax weight or melted wax weight? TIA Portia
Carrie
So do you add FO according to the hard wax weight or melted wax weight? TIA PortiaScent Cellar was talking about fluid ounces. The weight will be exactly the same melted as hard. 1 lb weight of paraffin will be 20 fluid oz when melted.
Sara
Mind you, when you add 1oz. of FO, that adds to the liquid volume as well. You notice the FO affect more as the size you are pouring goes up. Like, say I want to pour 10 8oz. masons - that is actually 6oz. of wax per jar, not 8 (for me). So 60oz. of wax at 6% FO... that is 3.6 oz of FO. So you will have 3.6 extra oz. there. Does that make sense? So you can't assume that 1 pound of wax will perfectly fill a 16oz. mason jar. And then yeah, you add in the expansion of wax and everything and ooh-la-la makes for more interesting volume findings. Where are our resident scientists? LOL. sudsnwicks
Are you using the standard 2 oz votive molds? Those are the ones I use and if I am making 12, then it takes 24 oz of wax, although I usually add a little extra to account for spills. DischordianJoy
Stupid question, maybe, but what is FO?

DischordianJoy
Oh, see, now I get it. I thought it might be something like that, but I didn't want to assume. Heh. Thanks.
tucker
OK I know how and why I screwed up. I'm making 22 oz. pillars (finished weight). I have to melt and measure almost 40 oz. (liquid wax) to have enough liquid wax to fill and repour the mold to achieve the 22 oz.
sharyl55
Now I'm confused. Thought we were making votives. Another reason to always weight your wax. You can set your pour pot on a scale if you want to use wax from your presto pot. I usually add 1 oz of wax per 8 2oz. votive to cover spills. Then I put the leftovers in my tart warmer.
