lothrid
Hi-I am a newbie and looking to make some soap next week. I am looking for a really creamy soap with a nice lather. I would like the recipe to contain shea butter...just b/c I love it! Can anyone help me out? I find all the lye calculators very confusing...even though I have been reading up on all this for weeks. Also, where is the best place to buy shea for soap making? Thanks so much, you are all so helpful!-Jamie
quiet girl
I'm still pretty new my self, so I don't have a tried and true recipe to give you, since I'm experimenting my self... I bought my shea butter from KB since I just wanted 1lb to get started, but eventually I'd love to order from the below site.... I'd like to buy as many things fair trade as possible, since women in underdevelloped countries need to support their children just like we do. http://www.agbangakarite.com/whole_bulksheabutter.php
CareBear
oh this is going to get confusing...I'm thinking "Quiet Girl, you are NOT new and you have a recipe on the board with shea butter!! What gives?!?" But then I realized there are two of you LOL.http://www.candletech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36294
Luci
Hey, CB! I had those same thoughts for a sec since I've used the "other" one's recipe before.
quiet girl
Yes, I hadn't looked around the board before signing up for an account. I picked the name, not knowing that a VERY similar name was already in use..... if I had have known I would have just used my first name
sudsnwicks
Jamie, what other oils do you have? I usually just get my shea from thesage.com as that is where I get several of my other ingredients and it is more convenient to order all from one place. Ruina
Jaime, you can take any recipe from this board or any website and using soapcalc reduce it to a 2lb batch. If you need help, just pm.Have you studied the miller soap site?
sudsnwicks
Jamie, if you prefer a veggie recipe, you could get coconut oil from walmart and lye from a hardware store. Also olive oil from wherever is cheapest. If you are ordering the shea butter from a supplier which carries other oils, you could get palm oil too. Then a basic 2# recipe could go something like this:coconut oil (25%) - 8.0 ozpalm oil (30%) - 9.6 ozolive oil (35%) - 11.2 ozshea butter (10%) - 3.2 ozlye (5% - 8% superfat) - 4.4 - 4.54 ozwater - 12 oz
