ladysj
I really love the look of votives but hate making them because they are such a PITA to get them full to the top with that little over hang. Anybody want to share their pouring techniques on these.
Wick'n'Wax
well, I know its a complete pain, but I love the full look I get from doing a 3rd repour my prob is getting the sustainer to stick to the bottom of the candle!
AnjieBurdett
I poured some today with the sustainer and wick in the mould, so no having to get it to stick. They're a bit rough though LOLAnjie,x.
Wick'n'Wax
so.......anjie, how did you pour without the sustainer floating up? what did you fix it with?
AnjieBurdett
LOL I didn't fix them, they set up a tiny bit first then i dropped the wicks/sustainers in, they stuck to the wax at the bottom, didn't float up. I used those big self centering sustainers.Anjie,x.
Wick'n'Wax
I tried that and pouring in the top lot of wax, melted the bottom lol
ladysj
I can help on that part I wait until my wax just starts forming a film then place my wick in it. It works very well for me and you don't have the problem of trying to get it to stay in place, centered when you pour the hot wax.

Wick'n'Wax
aah excellent Anjie, tell her congrats and well done hubby I seem to get lines unless i pour votives at 185, will have a play tomorrow
ladysj
You shouldn't get lines if you pour 2nd pour hotter than your first pour. Try doing it that way. I can help with stuff like that but can't get the dang tops right lol
Wick'n'Wax
do you think 175 bottom 185 tops is a big enough difference in temp?I pour, repour and then literally pour again till its overflowing sometimes.
ladysj
Yes that should be plenty good enough.
ladysj
We kind of got off topic on this and still didn't get the info I was looking for about getting them where the tops are smooth and full looking. Do you think I need to not fill them completely full and then do my repour which hopefully, won't shrink up.
Linnyeg
I dont fill until it's overflowing the first time. I just fill until it's just barely up to the top of the mold. Then I repour, hotter, the next day. (oh and get wick pins, they'll save you TONS of headaches!)
candlelady
OK, I USE TO DO VOTIVES and now DON'T now. I have 8 - 7 votive molds on sale for $11 each. And I have to say, even though I don't do SOY anymore, they are th easiest votives to pour. Anyway, When I poured my paraffin votives, I would heat the WAX high and pour then put a cover over them, then did a small repour. Perfect! Wick pins are TERRIFIC.....why pour and then wick when you can do it all in one step? Pour the votive with a wick pin, then after setting up, insert the wick, the a warning label on the bottom and you are set!Anyway, check out my classified ad for 8 - 7 votive mold strips, wicks pins, metal votive molds w/out pins....etc..HTHThanks! gingerinarkansas
When I pour my votives, which I totally hate to do, I pour them at a cooler temp cause I like the more rustic look with jump lines and such. The cooler wax gives that puffed up top. I pour as the wax starts to film over in pot. I use astorlite v and don't have to do any repours since the wax is so cool. I also use glass oyster cups as my molds...I like the look of the lip and they cool quicker. It took me a while to find exactly what I was looking for...some were too short...some to wide. chrisasst
when I pour my votives, I pour right to the bottom of the lip(don't over pour)...then I repour so it goes over the lip..(hope that makes sense)
Scented
My initial pour goes just below the rim. I let it sit for 30-45 minutes and sometimes longer. The second pour barely comes to the top of the mold and like 15 minutes I top them off.
