I read something that confused me... polypropylene or polyethylene?

I just saw on ICS that their bags are made of polyethylene so they won't "suck" the scent out of the wax. I always thought it was polypropylene bags that didn't suck scent out of wax.

Has anyone used both and could you tell a difference? Which one is the one that doesn't suck the scent out?

Thanks!

I used to sell crystal potpourri by the pound and at first I put it in the stretchy plastic zip top bags - that's polyethylene. It definitely sucked the fragrance out of the product. Lots of complaints of the scent disappearing. When I switched to polypro bags - cello - that issue stopped. It is for sure polyethylene that pulls the scent out.

I sent them an email and Kathy's reply was this:

"I know the whole sucking thing has been around forever. I think it's one of those urban legends. I'm not sure if a bag exists that actually sucks scent out of a product but mine do not. Have been selling them and using them for about 15 years and have never had or heard of that happening"

Her bags look like the ones I've ordered from AH but I'm not sure if theirs are polyethylene or polypropylene. I just assumed since they sold them that they were polypro. I thought it might be a typo also Vicky but every size is listed as being polyethylene and Kathy confirmed they were.

Hmmmm, makes me want to conduct an experiment!

Well, just from experience I would have to differ with what she said.  All of the tarts I poured (a  long time ago before I started reading this forum) that were put into polyethelene bags and portion cups had virtually NO scent left to them three months later.   In fact, the FO had begun eating through the bottoms of the portion cups.  I thought it was the wax and gave up on it, but have since found that using polypropolene absolutely does make a difference.   I have some now that have been in bags and cups for six months that actually smell even stronger and no FO eating through the cups.

Couldn't agree more. Zip lock bags & containers suck (literally)!

It's good to know that someone has had experience with both.

Where do y'all get your polypropylene bags?

I also have some plastic containers with drawers from Walmart that I store my clams and shaped tarts in. Are those ok to use? They are in the clamshells and bagged up but I'm hoping since they are made of plastic that they won't affect the scent of the wax. So far I've had some in there for a year and they still have a strong smell so I'm hoping they're ok.

I can tell you that I did talk with www.webstaurantstore.com last week about their plastic portion cups, and those are NOT safe to use. In case you were looking for cups also - thought I'd share.

I had been looking at poly pro bags on a few sites. Just been wondering where most get them from.

Sorry, I hit the wrong button before I finished... duh.  I get my 2x2 and 4x4 zippered bags from Uline and the cute printed cello bags from Papermart.  Make sure you type in polypropolene cello bags in the search because I do believe both places sell the other kind as well and make sure it says it in the description.

Thanks doglvr - didn't think of Papermart. Glad to see a Uline user. I've been on their site as well, pricing some bubble wrap also. Trying to decide the safest way to wrap a candle for shipping. Lots of steps in this candle world.

That depends on the portion cups the ELLIPSO portion cups are safe to use, I have been using them for years and so has a lot of other members. The standard one are not nor are the ones you get from Sam's Club.

Here is the link to the 2oz oval http://www.webstaurantstore.com/newspring-e1002-ellipso-2-oz-clear-oval-plastic-souffle-portion-cup-1000-case/128E1002%20%20%20%201M.html I use these for aroma bead scent samplers and only have to change out the beads once a year and that because the scent get lost from opening and closing so much. The least liked scent will last longer before I have to change them out.

Really? Because the email I sent him was this:

I am looking to buy "Newspring E1002 ELLIPSO 2 oz Clear Oval Plastic Souffle / Portion Cup 1000/Case"

this from you.

But I have a question. Do they have a #5 on the bottom of the portion cup? I have to have a #5 for the products I'm wanting to use them for.

Please advise,

Thanks!!

Hello,

Thank you for your interest in the WEBstaurant Store! Unfortunately, there is not a #5 located on the bottom or anywhere on this portion cup. Let me know if you have any questions. Have a great day.

You are right and not right at the same time. Yes when using most plastic it should have the #5 in the triangle. The Ellipso cups for some reason fall out side of that category. I think it because of the kind of plastic it made out of. Now I emailed them years ago asking what kind of plastic they were made of and got a "We do not know". That info falls under proprietary information. The company that makes them does not tell  WEBstaurant Store either. They are protecting their patent. Which I would too.

By the way did you look at the second picture in that link it shows wax tarts

Nope, totally missed the tart picture until now - went back to see it. So, I'm glad to know you've been using these for a long time these with no scent leaching out. Makes me feel better about ordering some. :D

I posted this previously (but cannot find the recent post). I sure miss being able to load pics right form my computer. Having to load to photobucket or other first means I will be posting fewer pics. Do not always have time to load it somewhere else first.

This from Pactiv/Newspring's site:

http://www.pactiv.com/products/containers/two-piece/ellipso-2oz-natural-cup-bulk-1000-e1002

Click through to Spec Sheet and you will see material says PP (Polypropylene versus PE which is Polyethylene). Not saying that things have not recently changed but my cases are what is pictured above. #5 PP.

I get my cups through Wasserstrom.

Uline if I want 1,000-2,000. If I am testing different bag sizes or need something special for a sampler or such, I use Nashville Wraps. I like that I can get small quantities from them. I also get my Kraft tissue there.
