  1. Ok thanks so much! How strong is the chili pepper in this oil? I've not been given a definite on if they want just a straight orange yet. I'm not really making any candles now other than for myself, family and the customers that have been really good about ordering and she is one of them so want to keep her happy. It's what little extra income I have coming in to at least support my "habit" and help with costs of supplies to keep me making candles! I have tried the BC citrus splash but had forgot about that one!
  2. I have one of the people that I continue to make my candles and melts for requesting an orange scent. I've never done one before so have no idea who would have a good one so I am turning to all of you for some help on this! Any suggestions on a good orange or orange blend?? I'm not really needing to order any other scents right now but if someone could spare a little orange that would help too! I use eco soya advanced if that would help with suggestions! TIA
  3. Bought some of this from classy ads so was just wondering if anyone had used this scent from anywhere other than Sweetcakes and how does it compare to SC?? Thanks!
  4. For the straight soy I have to agree with the advanced soy. For a soy blend some of the 70/30 blends maybe? I used Joy Wax for a long time until switching to the CB advanced soy and I love it.
  5. There is Joy Wax from Nature's Garden. I'm sure there are others out there, this is just one I used for a long time. I think that some of the 70/30 blends are like this also.
  6. I saw this thread and have to ask this question. I have had the same problem with some of my zinc wicks with the white ashy tops and they won't burn. My problem only happens with certain FO tho. I have decreased from an oz. down to 3/4 oz and still the same thing happens with one of the oils. I've not tried the others yet. I love this scent so that is why I am working on it first. It is cider snap and I do this scent just like the rest with same heat when I add the FO, same jars each time. I don't do anything different with this scent than I do with any of the others but for some reason my wicks will not burn past a certain point (can't remember how long they burn off the top of my head and forgot to write it down so I would know!), get the white ashy tops. It's not just one of them when I dbl. wick, it is both wicks. I'm not sure what is going on. Could the oil be a bad oil? I use eco soy advanced, 51-32 wicks. I let the wax get slushy before pouring which is what I do with all of them. I use a scale to measure the oil also. Anyway, when I saw this thread thought rather than start a new one would ask here to see if anyone had any ideas on this! TIA
  7. I have a place where I can buy wax locally and I buy the ecosoy advanced. It is normally $65.50 a case but until the 15th they have it on sale for $59. It's not a huge savings over some of the online places but when you figure in the cost to have it shipped it ends up saving me over $40 with it being on sale and being able to go pick it up. I'm not making the volume I once was now but with Christmas coming up I have had a little increase from my regular customers that I sold to on a continuous basis and I am making alot for gifts again this year. It would sure be nice to see the prices go down and stay down but I don't think that is likely.
  8. I use soy for votives to make my tarts and had been wanting to try the souffle cups but have not had any luck around here finding any with the 5 on the bottom. My daughter has a friend that is a manager at Subway and they usually have excess of the 2 ozers. so she brought me a few hundred of them. What I am doing with these is pouring the wax in them, letting them set up and then removing to make the tarts like this. They look pretty cool this way. I then package in the poly pro bags. I tried some of the 1 oz. cups I bought from someone thru the classy ads, didn't have the 5 on bottom of them but just wanted to see what would happen to them after sitting for a while. I know that others have said they would lose their scent so I just wanted to see how long it would take for this to happen. Let me be clear, I didn't doubt anyone that told me it would happen, I just wanted to see how long it would take. Not but about a week and they were not as strong as the day they were poured. It was just out of curiosity for doing this. The thing I guess that surprised me was the fact that not only did these lose the scent but, they ate right thru the bottom of the cups! I think that surprised me more than anything. I'm not that experienced working with plastics with waxes and oils so I just wanted to see what would happen. Now I know!
  9. I like the ease of use of the clamshells but, I have trouble selling them so I stick to these little foil cups that are half way down the page on here: http://www.kycandlewaxsupply.com/packaging.htm The little foil cups work great for me. I pkg. these up in single, 4 pks. and 6 pks. Some of my people like to try a few different scents, others like the same scent. This way they can choose what they want. They are pretty easy to use also, you just pour right into them without having to mess with the molds. Of course, you have to wait before putting them in the pkg. but it is another alternative to consider. I use soy for votives for my tarts also. Hope this helps. Good luck on whatever you decide! **ETA-Wow southern scents....those look terrific!**
  10. Thanks! I had no idea on the difference in the #'s and thought maybe it had something to do with things like this so wanted to ask. It never hurts to know these things! :smiley2:
  11. When I was making my soaps I used the clamshells and they did well for me. I think it depends on area also. They were really easy to work with and people could do the same with the clamshells as with the bags as far as being able to smell them. I just liked them too since they cut back on time for me. It's just a matter of what a person likes and how well they do for you.
  12. Thanks BizzyBs! You just saved me a trip to the other side of town! I'm going to probably ask a stupid question here so if it is, it is but, what is the difference between the numbers on the bottom of these? I have never tried these before so I don't know anything about the numbers on them. Do the #'s determine the type of plastic they are made of, thickness or what? I know it was mentioned that if want the scent to stay fresh to use the #5 on bottom. Is this kind of the same thing like with using poly pro bags as opposed to using plastic with melts and things?? Pardon my ignorance on this but I had to ask!
  13. Thanks Sliver and Judy! I've not had the chance to see whether they have the number on the bottoms or not so will be sure to check them out. I've not used these before so wanted to try them out and see how they work for me. Appreciate the responses!
  14. Not to hijack, but are the ones Sams sells ok to use for melts? I am going to be buying some from there IF they ever get them back in stock here! They had plenty of lids but no cups this last week even tho the site said they were in stock.
  15. Thanks for the suggestions! I have used the Vanilla Pumpkin from Candle Source and it was a really nice scent, fairly close to what I had been buying just not quite the same. I liked it tho! So far not got a bad oil from Loren, wish I could say the same about some other places! :smiley2: I really appreciate these ideas of scents to try. I will taking a look at the places mentioned and see what other scents they have also and go from there on where to try some of these from.
  16. Thanks Kristi! I am full on wax right now but with the way prices are increasing with the wax and then shipping charges getting higher it will be worth the drive across town for me to stop in and get some of this to try. I use zinc wicks with my soy and have had great luck with them. I have a ton of these right now too. I use the 51-32-18 on the 8 oz jj and get nice results with these. Would that be a god starting point also for the 464? Or would you suggest something else. I've tried cotton core but there was a reason I didn't care much for them, it might have been the way the wicks would "curl" but if I remember correctly, this was the way these wicks self trimmed maybe?? If not these then there was one I tried that did this. It has been so long ago that I can't remember. Thanks for the info on this wax, will be sure to try it and see how it works!
  17. The ones I had were working very well up to the point that this one had the spigot come off. As a matter of fact, I had used them for about 5 years when this happened. Like I said, I'm not sure what caused it but my husband used some JB weld and put it back on. I double checked the rest of the pots and they are ok but they got reinforced with JB weld also just to be on the safe side of things. All of them had been threaded to the pot so it's anyones guess as to why this one came off. I had moved them a few times so maybe I bumped it against something without realizing it, I don't know. I agree tho, do check them if you get them with the spigots.
  18. I think they came out with this one last year but their Pumpkin Apple butter I think is a really good one. I sold a ton of this scent last year at this time. This year with just making the tarts I have sold alot of it, will have to order again soon if I sell what I did last year. I use soy, not sure how it would perform in other waxes. That is my opinion on one of the newer ones. For all I know this one may have been around a while but I thought they just brought this one out last year. HTH!
  19. Morris wax is not too far from me so I need to check with them to see if they carry this wax. I know they don't have the ez-soy but they carry the eco soys. I guess I should hit their website and see if they have it. I knew from using the 415 that it is basically the same as the ez-soy, I think that I got told that when I bought some from a classy ad on here. It seemed pretty much the same to me as the ez-soy. **ETA: I went and checked they have the 464 listed so how would that compare do you know? Says it is all soy.**
  20. I have 4 of these each with a spigot. I bought them off of one of the classy ads a while back. I love the spigot on mine since it does make it easier for me. I can tell you tho, make sure you check your spigots if you have them. A few months ago I was using one of my prestos and the spigot starting leaking, before I realized what was happening the dang thing came off the pot! It had been on there pretty good I thought. I have no idea if the heat caused it to come apart or what. I bought them with the spigots already attached. Needless to say I had a huge mess on my hands. I always keep something on the floor under where my pots are at just in case there are a few drops that come out after putting in my pour pots but, this mess ended up with soy wax on a pretty good sized area of my hardwood floor. I know that not too long ago there was a thread on here started about presto pots something to do with spigots or not....those that did not use spigots were using something else to dip the wax out of the pots. I think most were using ladels from what I remember. If you decide against the spigot you might want to try this.
  21. I used to order from Candle chem a scent called Vanilla Pumpkin Pie. Last year they discontinued this scent due to a supplier issue is what I seem to remember being told when I emailed them. I have since tried Vanllia Pumpkin from Loren, had a nice scent but did not seem as strong as CC's. Don't get me wrong, the scent was great, just not like I had hoped for with previous supplier. Anyway, has anyone found, or use, vanilla pumpkin from anyone that you could recommend to me? I'm not much on pumpkin scents myself but I do have family that likes this one so, opinions on where to find a good pumpkin pie, pumpkin spice....things along those lines would help me a great deal for this fall. I have birthdays coming up and want to give candles for these to those in the family. I know that what one likes another might not but for now just hoping for suggestions on what others have used and opinions on these. I am just going to start with sample bottles for now so, any opinions are welcome and greatly appreciated. My daughter mentioned to me that she would like a nice strong cranberry scent. Cranberry is not a scent I have ever tried. So any suggestions on this would be great! It doesn't really matter if it is just cranberry or cranberry with something else. I just want to try some. TIA
  22. These are posts that I myself tend to stay out of also. I guess because there are so many of you out there that know so much more than I do when it comes to making candles etc. I have been doing this for about 9 years now. I, like a lot of people on here started out with this as a "hobby", albeit a very expensive one at that. I have spent many hours reading on these boards the advice, information, techniques, suggestions, waxes, wicks, fragrance oils, this board is a wealth of information. I have learned alot also just by sitting back and researching the threads on here. Whether we agree with the "tone" of those that are offering their years of expertise/advise or not, it just boils down to the simple fact that it is an industry that can be a dangerous one to be in. I can honestly say that when it comes to threads like these it does get scarey to realize how many people do not test, that just melt the wax, add the oils, wick the jars, pour the wax in them and send them out the door before they know what the candle will do. I have found myself at times thinking some of these answers can come across as being rude, on the border of being out of line. When you step back and take a look at the big picture of things these responses are just trying to stress that all important point of you just can't do what was mentioned above with melt, add oils, wick, pour and out the door. Read between the lines with what is being said, it is safety. Safety is what is really being stressed in these responses. Ok, so maybe it might be able to be worded a little differently but in the end this is the gist of the whole point of what is being said. I don't think anyone is trying to be malicious in their responses. I just feel that safety can not be stressed enough with this industry. I've had posts I made with questions or posts I made where I was excited over something when I first started out that made me want to crawl up and go elsewhere. Once I really thought thru what had been said to me I made sense of it and understood. Points were made, valid ones, to make me rethink what I was doing wrong. In the end what I am trying to say is don't let it get to you. If you really love what you are doing as we all seem to, take the advice being given. Take the time to test, test, test and test till you think you can't test any longer. For me, this has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. I miss doing what I used to be able to do before my back finally forced me out of the candle side of this business. Just remember, Rome wasn't built in a day and candles that are safe to go to the public will not happen in a day. Like everything it takes time, money, effort and the willingness to learn. I'm by no means as experienced as some on here but, I do read the advice they offer and try things for myself. Research, patience and time, in the end it will all pay off for those willing to put forth the effort. Good luck to those that are new to this. I wish you much success but don't get discouraged if you are not hearing what you want to hear. Be open to learning b/c this board, as well as others, have a wealth of information available to all of us.
  23. This is the first and only problem I have ever had with this wax so I guess I have been lucky in that aspect. It looks like I will be sticking with the Ez-Soy from now on. These are really the only 2 waxes I use. The soy takes a little more work than the Joy but if the Joy is going to perform like this batch has I can deal with the little bumps the soy gives me cuz they can be taken care of with a heat gun. It's too bad the heat gun won't help me with the throw of the Joy wax like it does with the flaky tops on the soy! I got some of the 70/30 from TN and I don't like it either. The same problems with it as with the Joy. They both seem about the same as far as their consistency so I don't know if they are both 70/30 or not I just know that I am not happy with either of these with the way they are working out for me. No throw for me on either. I have to stand over the candle in order to just get a faint hint of the scent of what I am burning. Since these candles stay at my house I don't label them I just remember which scent based on the color. I have even given these both "cure times" of over a week before burning them and still nothing. It's disappointing to say the least but I know not to order either of these again. Expensive lesson learned that is for sure!
  24. I have used Joy Wax for quite some time now and had not noticed any change in the wax like some others had noticed until now. Is anyone else experiencing a problem with this wax not having very good cold or hot throw? I've tried using an ounce and 1 1/2 oz. of FO in this but still no luck. It's just not perfoming for me like I am used to it doing. Good thing I am just making candles for myself now cuz these last few I have made are just not what my customers would have been used to as far as the scents. I've not changed a thing with these either, same fragrance oils from the same suppliers and still using the same wicks. It has me stumped right now. Is this the same thing that others have experienced with this wax before?
  25. Normally I don't say much but, wasn't the op referring to their experiences with soy as far as this technique goes rather than anything else? I had never heard of tempering wax either until it was brought up on this board recently and I say recently because that is when I first read anything on it. I only use soy wax and I will say that I have never had the issues brought up when tempering is not done whether I use dyes or not. I do care what my candles look like, how they burn, the scent throw both hot and cold, etc. For this reason I use this board and some others to find out what others experience when they try different things. Not to mention the reason I have tested, tested, tested and tested more to see how a wax will perform for me and what I make. I have always understood that these boards were for information to be passed on to others about what they find with waxes, wicks, scents and anything else that goes along with what we make. I agree, there is the search feature but I failed to see where the op was asking anything rather they were sharing what they found when trying both methods. JMO....may not be worth much but voiced it anyway.
