  1. http://www.angelfire.com/on3/shellandpaulsphoto/Picture.jpg This is a multi-layer candle that did not work out due to the overmelt of the white. But this is as close to red as I can get it. My wife refuse to let me melt it down and wants to burn it so like a good boy she will get her wish
  2. Funny that you would mention this story. I was at a antique market with my wife and there was a stand selling soy scented jar candles. All the people around the candles were coohing and awwwwing at how great the scent was. I picked one up and it smelled like pure scent that is still in the bottle. I thought to myself "how could they possibly get this strong a scent into this wax"... Each candle was about $6 and in like a 9 oz jar. People were getting these candles like they were food and they starving. I figured "well lets see how it burns?" so I bought one (the person making the candles was not there as this was an unmanned booth). Well we got the candle home, and no more than 5 min after I lit it the wick mushroomed like an a-bomb. Since then its been nothing more than cutting one shroom after another. If I leave it balooned the flame will grow dim and the flame looks like its about to go out. Another thing that got on my nerves is the cashier that was manning the register at this market(more like a collection of unmanned booths). As we were purchasing the candle he said "well, since they are made out of soy you know they are healthier for you!" I'm thinking...are we going to eat these or something? As it stands in its current form if I blow this particular candle out with one of these "shrooms" attached to the wick, the thing smokes for 5 min during which the mushroomed wick shoots off red ambers out of the jar. Yay for quality:yay: But almost all the candles were gone, people were getting 3-8 at a time! Makes me sad:sad2:. I could make candles like this with my eyes closed.
  3. Its a liquid dye frim candlewic http://www.candlewic.com/store/Product.aspx?q=c73,p752 The wax is from the same source http://www.candlewic.com/store/Product.aspx?q=c19,p760 Both batxhes of the wax were from the same source. The first batch I was able to get the same red color like in the pictures you have however the second batch of the same wax is always a shade of pink regardless of how much red i put in. If i mix in black I end up getting purple! I will post pictures soon so you guys can see what im talking about.
  4. I bought some starburst palm wax again, but I have noticed something that I do not think was there when I used this wax last time. If I recall correctly, last time I used palm wax of this type when melted the wax was clear, yet now when I melt it is a yellow color just like soy. I ask because last time I used the wax I was able to make a red candle, now I get a pink candle every single time. I have no idea on what happened. There is no dening that this wax is star burst palm but why the color shift?
  5. BAH!!! Now I ve done it!!! My wife stated in so many words that she loves the candle when it glows and to stop playin with the formula. She likes seeing the patterns on the shell instead of not really being able to see them as the candle burns down. She told me thats what the paraffin candles were for...sigh,:rolleyes2
  6. I just like to stick to one supplier. I might try out the cd line of wicks. Ill see if Candle Science will send out a sample to me to see if it is all that its cracked to be.
  7. I tried 30,36,and 45 all tunneled. I tried like a 24 it tunneled even more. I will try http wicks and cotton core wicks...maybe cd wicks as well. testing testing testing thats all it will take.
  8. Im still playing with the wick sizes but 30 ply is very ineffective so Im going overkill to 60. I will also try cotton core wicks since they burn very hot. The reason I will not but CSN wicks is that they are exclisive to one store and that store does not sell palm wax anymore so they may pull the wicks too. On a side note 8 oz. roll 1048 ft/roll 36-24 Cotton what does the 36-24 mean?
  9. I used 30 ply like what was recomended for the star wax and it tunneled straight down leaving a shell. I also used 45ply (both flat braid and it still tunneled) I dont get it. Soooo i will try 60 might be over kill but there is one way to find out. I also did not add any palm steric to it. I want to find a wick that gives me results that are somewhat close to what I want then I start adjusting the wax mix. Thats how I ended up being able to make almost perfect paraffin burn candles
  10. No mater how large od a wick I use the candle alway tunnels. It gives of a nice warm glow but I was hoping it would burn down like the parafin pillars. I can't hug palm wax since it sust breaks apart. Any ideas or does this wax just behave this way?
  11. I just started making soy container candles. What wicks work well with these types of waxes. flat braided wicks failed me horribly(works great for palm and parffin). Any suggestions.
  12. What gets on my nerves is the lack of data. How pollutant is it, say compared to living next to a busy road? Or say burning toast? These so called harmfull chamicals... what concentrations are they in? You can't just throw stupid statements around with nothing to back it up!!!
  13. http://health.yahoo.net/rodale/WH/beat-bad-air-days What do you guys think? Other than the spelling of course:laugh2:
  14. I just srted in soy an bought 121 mp wax to make soy container candles just what type of wick should I use. HTP,eco etc...
  15. I never had any problems that you mentioned with wick pins. I don't sell the candles so I dont give a $$^# what they will look like for 10 seconds before I burn them. If it burns and looks nice doing so. Also I tried both with and with out a wick pin.. the burn was identical. by the way those cheap candles fly off the shelves like crazy at most stores..many people yould love to have those kinds of sales. But what do I care I just make them fo me and will use what is easies to me.
  16. Why is adding steric acid not needed for a 120 MP container wax?
  17. http://www.craftserver.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94093 How do you make candles like that.. All the candles I get have this smooth like silk skin... I want something more like that!
  18. Actually I already started this topic in the general forum http://www.craftserver.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94157 just so it does not look like im trying to spam with the same question.
  19. Pics will be foth coming. The container is like a large shot glass 2.75 inches tall and 2.75 accross. The wick is 18 ply flat braid(again i usually work with paraffin). The reason I added the steric acid to the wax was the wick would just drill into the 119 mp wax and then drownd in the wax. Plus the web site i bought it from recommended it for best results here is the link to the product. http://www.candlewic.com/store/Product.aspx?q=c18,p512
  20. Its a good anser and one that really helped answer my question When I started I used to put 60 ply flat braids in my 3 inch pillars! That was a soot fest turned the room gray! Now I use 140 mp wax and 24ply(even though most sites recomend 27 ply I found the the 27 ply creates this tiny soot trail comin off the top of the flame so I went down a size and although the 24 ply can cause the trail too it usually means its time to trim the wick, i did try to go to 18ply and it failed horribly.). I use 140mp wax and add 2tbs of stearine to it per lbs and the candle burns perfectly down without sagging or spillingng.nd my happy formula as I call it! For the 3 X 6 pillars anyway.(of course once I start adding FO im sure everything will change in my "happy formula". Its just hard to try and make sense of all the info out there. Some sites tell you that "PARAFFIN WAX IS TOXIC AND EVIL!!" and "Soy is been sent to us from heaven because it so pure and all"... The you find a site that states the exact oppisite.
  21. It does take a few hours before the flame starts to get tall. However I read on these forum some people stating that if you have to trim the wick it is an indication that it has been wicked wrong since the wick I use(flat braid 24ply) should be self trimming.
  22. If you over wick a parafin candle you end up with a massive soot stream comin from the flame and the wax will be consumed very quickly. My question is that if you have wicked the candle properly are you still getting this soot but at a much slower rate thus it is not visable to the human eye?
  23. Its a votive type glass. Like a large shot glass. 2.5-3 inches in diamater and avout 4 inches tall. I used a flat braid wick(18 ply)(sorry I usuallt work with Parafin).
