  1. Question about the 3M vs. Permatex "goo"; Aren't the 3M adhesive pads thicker than what the goo would be that I currently use? Would that not leave even more wax un-melted in the bottom of the container? My customers are pleased with how much of the candle burns at the bottom and if the 3M pad raises the wick tab even 1/16th" or so would that not leave more un-melted wax at the bottom of the container. The goo method adheres the wick tab almost on the container surface. Maybe not a biggie but a thought. Hope I made sense. I too would like to not have goo stress. Dave
  2. Thanks all, I emailed my supplier and their Stearic Acid is the correct one and they added it to my order. Why they are working on Sunday is crazy! Their customer service has always been FANTASTIC. Just a shame they are across the country and their wax shipping costs are prohibitive now. Dave
  3. Is there a difference between Stearic Acid and Palm Stearic Acid? My main supplier only lists Stearic Acid? Dave
  4. Trying hand at pillars. First attempt. Ordered 3" dia mold, some Feather Palm and 24 ply flat braid wick. Have only worked with paraffin. Any suggestions? Yes I have read tons here, however anything to make life easier right off the bat, I'm all ears. Dave
  5. Has anyone received a Peak newsletter for November with a Discount code? Last I received was in October. Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong area. Dave
  6. Birthday Cake, Spruce Christmas Tree, Georgia Peach, French Vanilla and Amber............in paraffin Dave
  7. I'm really moved by the thought of what you have done to preserve such a wonderful memory. Awesome! That really is special. Dave
  8. If you look, both Peak and JS are 1" x 1" cavities. Why Peak says 1 oz and JS says 2.5 oz is confusing! A 1" x 1" cavity will weigh the same in either. Possibly one is basing it on soy vs paraffin. Either way in my opinion in the case of JS vs Peak they would hold the same amount of wax. Speaking from personal use, the Peak product is what I consider high quality and I have been very pleased with it. Just my thoughts. Dave
  9. I get mine @ Peak $0.30 @ 50 level $15.00 $0.25 @ 875 case $222
  10. Looks great! Been doing tons of soapmaking reading. Can't wait to try. All my time has been spent making candles. Wifey would kill me if I started soaping right now. Still I can't wait. Dave
  11. The cut pieces seem to have rounded edges? Were these not cut from a slab?
  12. I too use IGI 4794.............Love the results. Dave
  13. I was pouring at temps under 200 degrees. Jars were cleaned and glue gun glue sticks were high temp type. I was having wick tabs coming unglued during pour. Out of the blue. I had changed nothing. Now with such a high temp of the RTV, not only are my tabs staying put, I can rest assured that when people do burn in a non safe manner (such as power burning), I will be able to rest a little easier knowing I have a few hundred degrees of wiggle room. Dave
  14. They do set pretty quick and it seems as though you could pour sooner, however it says full cure in 24 hours so for safety purposes I do wait the full 24 hours. Since that is the reason I switched to the Permatex in the first place. I also had never tried the Wick Stick Ums because I was reading that people were having the same issue with them as I was having with the hot glue gun. So why even try them. It seems the only two methods that seem to consistently not come un-done were the Permatex RTV and the GE Silicone. I am now a believer in the safety of my candles is #1. And it was a pain having wick assemblies coming loose while pouring. Dave
  15. I also used high heat glue sticks with no problems and then all of a sudden my wicks would pull loose after pouring. I had changed nothing. I too learned of Permatex from Stella here on CT and have since had NO wicks come loose. I do still use hot glue for testers. What a great find. The Permatex does stink............but what a small price to pay for safety. Dave
  16. Love Peak's B-Day Cake. Have only used in Parffin Everyone around here loves it! And so do I! Dave
  17. Both Indie Beauty Network and The Handcrafted Soapmakers Guild offer product liability insurance with their memberships. IBN is $545 yr including $1mm liability ins. HSMG is $500 yr including $1mm liability ins. HSMG requires any percentage of sales be from soap but also covers candles. IBN covers any handcrafted item period. I primarily sell candles but other handcrafted items also (including soap). My insurance agent wants $875 yr @ $1mm coverage (I am in MD) Any suggestions between IBN vs HSMG since I have never dealt with either? Never even heard of IBN until tonight. Thanks, Dave
