  1. Please tell me what not to do with this multibase. The supplier said just add equal amount of base and water for a body cream. Is this correct? I am scared to add the fo because all the warning that it would "melt" if I did it wrong. Please someone offer to help out.....................Is this correct: 8oz base, 8oz water and 1/2 oz fo. Do I just stir or do I "whip"? (What does that even mean/) lol! I just have 2 tubs of this , one in cocoa butter and one in goats milk..........if I mess it up i have nothing.....as I cannot get anymore........please walk me thru this. i can't find any posts that tell me exactly what to do, or else I am blind!
  2. First let me say that I had thought that i was gonna make me some body cream, tried reading up on it..........sounded like greek to me! lol! This lady said that it was easier than making candles, so since I make candles I thought I could do it. What! she must of been crazy! I can't even get started.:embarasse So anyway, I just bought a Multibase-EL from my supplier, said all I had to do was add equal amount of water to base for a body butter. But THEN someone told me that if I added too much fo, the whole thing would "melt"! Now I am afraid to even open the lid! Could someone tell me how to literally add the water and fo? Is that all I do, just say......take a bowl, add 8oz base, then 8oz water, then 1/2 oz fo and mix all together? Maybe keep cool? Please tell me that is all........! Do I "whip" or stir alot or add anything else? By the way I got one multibase in "goats milk" and one in "cocoa butter".
  3. When I first started coming here, this site would not allow me to several forums, classifieds being one of them. I gave up even trying so all this time I have never seen what was there. I tried again just now and it let me in! So now I see alot of things people have to sale. Here is a question I have.... What do I look for to know if it is a legit person with legit stuff to sale? Or rather how do I avoid getting ripped off? any suggestions?
  4. BY the way, my plan was to buy some of KY's soy whipped body cream and just add the scent to that. From what I understand the cream is ready to use when you get it? correct? and I just add the fo to get the scent I want? am I on the right page?
  5. Those ingrediants sound like something maybe Carribean? Or is that more of a fruit cocktail type of smell? The coconut is not strong, maybe the pineapple is the prevailing scent.......Anyone know of something close I could atleast try?
  6. I was wondering where and how people get rid of their candle stuff when they decide to go out of business? I have found stuff on ebay, but was wondering if there is somewhere else i could check? With the economy the way it is, I think it would be smart for me to maybe get stuff used or in groups, instead of investing ALL my money into more candle stuff. Any suggestions on places to look for people that are wanting to get rid of candle supplies/etc?
  7. My hubby loves the smell (as do I ) of the Vivacious Body Cream that is sold by Arbonne. It costs $20 per 7oz. jar, so with the way things are going , I thought I would try to make me something similiar, seeing as how I would be afraid to buy another jar. I make candles, not body cream, but I have never smelled anything close to that. Anyone know what I am talking about?
  8. from Alabaster: fresh linen is really strong in soy
  9. okay, okay, gonna try some! lol! Right now I have a scent that I have run out of............Autumn Spice Special from BCN. It was one of their closeouts I think. Any advice on a similiar scent from Berts?
  10. Are the scents you both listed ones from "Heaven Scents/Berts"? I use 100% soy w/cottonseed oil (GW 435) . IT has been a booger to work with! I live on a mountain, i don't know if that affects things, but I almost always have to add coconut oil to get a stronger scent throw. I start thinking that it does nothing, so I leave it out........Not as strong......back to adding coconut oil! It frosts something terrible as well...........Like I said the oils from Bluegrass have been awesome in my wax, but they are so high! I would love to find some other oils that work really great in my wax as well!
  11. Here is what I am looking for. My main scents (for soy candle) come from BCN, TN, Alabaster,& Bluegrass. To get a really stong candle I have to use 1 to 1.25oz per lb. =oils from BCN 1 to 1.10oz per lb. = oils from TN 1 to 1.25oz per lb = oils from Alabaster less than 1oz per lb = oils from Bluegrass I realize that all scents are not gonna be as strong but I have never ordered a scent from Bluegrass that was not very strong and took barely an oz per lb. However their prices are higher. Of the oils I have tried from Alabaster 50% have been really good the others I have to use 1.25oz per lb. , same with BCN. But sometimes they have really good deals. 75% of the oils I have tried from TN have been pretty strong, etc. I know it is a pick and choose thing, that you learn what oils from where work in your particular wax, etc. I was just afraid that because the oils from "Heaven Scents" were so reasonable (alot are $10 lb., correct?)that they were not gonna be all that strong..............But maybe I will try them based on your comments. I hope the shipping is not crazy................
  12. How many here use "Heaven Scents" (Bert)? They are very reasonable, how is the quality of their oils for candles? Are they as good as "Bluegrass"? (The best oils I've ever used)
  13. How long did you leave the votives in a bowl? The melts have been in the box for 9 days. Do you think they are already lessened in quality?
  14. I was wondering if wood is a safe way to store soy melts? I make melts that I cut into chunks and sell by the oz. I have been storing them in the reccommended plastic/poly. containers. For a recent candle party , I made a wooden box to display them in. It was rectangular with dividers (also wooden) to seperate the different scents. I them labeled each "bin" . It worked great, but I was wondering if would hurt to leave them in there. i could make a lid to close over the whole thing, but it wouldn' t be airtight. WOuld this decrease the quality and scent to leave it in the wooden box?
  15. So far the oils are about the same as any other I buy, but I haven't finished wicking them yet. The pumpkin spice is the stongest and surprisingly the cinnamon is weakest..........
  16. Been out of town for a couple days, ( family emergency) so just now getting back and seeing what everyone has voted for! While we were there at the hospital, I pulled out my paper and said........well since we don't have anything to do.......lol! So I had them voting on a name as well. They liked Mountain Elegance, Woodland Ambiance and Homespun Ambiance. They voted AGAINST "stitches n wicks" said that hearing it and not seeing how it was spelled.....the first thing they thought of was witches , as in "wic" or whatever. Okay that was a first..........I still like it as well
  17. Okay, I had my first candle party with family, neighbors and friends! Approx. 25- 30 adults came with orders totaling around $700. I had everyone vote on the business names that were posted in the thread titled "Business name, why is this so complicated to me". Here are the ones that got the most votes. 1.The Scented Hearth 2.Scent on the Mountain 3.Handcrafted Home Decor 4.Mountain Candles & Gifts 5.Stitches N Wicks 6.This name was presented and liked , as something that would cover anything I do, now and in the future: "Mountain Elegance". Also, Candles across the Generations, Family Fragrances, Flickering Ambiant Wicks, Georgia Special,& Mountain Stitches N Wicks were new names that were presented by those present but didn't get high votes. A retired wealthy man, that my siser cleans house for, came though I can't imagine why.....maybe he was bored or had an urge to see how the "servants" life is?..lol! Anyway, he suggested including the name "mountain " , he said that alot of people think of things as being "made by hand" in the mountains..knowing its custom or original, not store bought is appealing to some I guess. Well what do you all think? Will you vote again on those top 6 names? I had hoped that there would be an overwhelming agreement on one, but I guess this has us going in a direction atleast. I sold 4oz for $4.00, 8oz. for $6, 16oz. for $10(all mason jars) and an 18oz. victorian jar for $12.50. and melts for $.75 an oz. for a total of almost $700. My mom and I cooked a supper of chili, hot dogs, barbecue, baked beans and potato salad with pumpkin pies, etc. My husband baked some of his famous hot apple pies which were scraped clean! My sister provided games and prizes, for all the kids that came (about 25). We finished it off with 2 hayrides, one for young kids and families and a scary one for the older kids and fun loving adults. I am hoping that was some serious advertisment! I also had everyone vote on all 30 scents I had available, to narrow it down to the best, but it will take me awhile to tally that up! Well what do you think?
  18. I am curious as to why you did this. Was it to eliminate frosting? How hot was the 435 when you put it in the jars? I usually pour my 435 at 100-110. Was it hotter than this?
  19. Okay , thanks everyone, I am printing the names off now for the party and the vote. Will let you know how it goes! PLEEEAAAASEEE let us decide on a name! lol!
  20. Thanks for the info! So far the oils have really good cold throw, Haven't tried to wick them yet. They do smell different though. The only way I know how to explain it is: The other oils I use have a "clear" scent, almost bitter, but not a bad bitter. These oils have an "earthy" mixed smell. Kinda of like its several smells that just make one new smell. Okay that sounds weird. Like the normal oils I use have a "bite" to them and this is "smooth" scentsation. On voting, some testers have said they loved it, some said they disliked the "bitter " being gone. (Same scent, one from TN , one from this man) I'm not deciding until I burn them.
  21. Sock Monkey, Where is there a fragrance manu. in Ga.? By the way,I guess you could say this man is in the scent business. He mixes his own oils. They sell to other candle makers here in this area. When you tell him what you want the oils for (lotion, perfume, soap , candle, etc) then he mixes it accordingly. It is more like $15 a lb to get it skin safe for lotions and perfumes. Well, i'll tell you how it goes...........
  22. I met a local man, from some country I never heard of, at a craft show. He deals in oils, which he sells for various reasons. (At the craft show he was selling some kind of perfume oil) Anyway I got to talking to his wife(who is American) and found out that he gets his oils from all over the world, because of his family. He wanted to know if I used pure oils that were not skin safe or skin safe for my candles. I told him that I have used both , but am more interested in the pure oils. Of course the pure cost more but is more concentrated. $20 per pound. I am trying three of his oils this week to see if any difference. I was just wondering if anyone has every dealt with a private dealer like that ? I have always gotten my oils from a supplier, such as Bittercreek, Bluegrass, Alabaster, etc. What are the pros and cons of trying out his oils? He has a fairly large list to choose from. I'll let you know if I wasted my money or not!:embarasse I hope it goes well, they seem like nice people..........
  23. Yeah, Hearth is part of a fireplace, its just that is conjures up that whole "rustic, earthy" thing I love! Imagine an Old English cottage on the edge of the moor......Its cold and rainy, there is a stone fireplace in the middle of the room with a blazing fire keeping everything warm and cozy....let's sit by the hearth. The smell of baking bread or the wonderful aroma of a crackling fire fill the room......Another meaning for hearth is: family life, home...............Oh I'm liking this name.............Thats one thing in common all my work has that I haven't thought of. Its all done in my garage so I can be a stay at home mom. i do candles with my mom, various family members help out when needed...It is family life, my home...........What do you think? If this doesn't affect anyone else this way, i concede my opinion , again! lol!
  24. I actually like "The Scented Hearth"! Even Stone Hearth, which could be anything. How about "Mountain Firelight"? Or Firelight on the Mountain? That could be anything...I asked my mom about stitches n wicks she said , whatever I wanted, i could pick the name. I'm taking all these names and ideas that have been posted and putting them before a vote of all my friends and family Nov 1! (My sister is hosting mom and me a candle party) I am also letting them add their suggestions. I'll let you all know what happens! Please keep posting ideas and names, I won't print them out until October 30 or 31. This is actually getting fun to me now that I am dropping my opinion of what or how the name should go! I am listening to everthing.............!
